    Docs Outside The Box

Hosts Dr. Nii (Ghanaian) and Dr. Renee (Haitian) are first-generation physicians who paid off $662,000 in student loans in 3 years – while figuring out contracts, career moves, and money management that their colleagues learned at home.

Every episode covers what first-gen docs need to know:

    • Contract negotiation and career decisions
    • Paying off debt without family financial guidance
    • Building wealth from scratch
    • The questions you don’t know to ask (but your colleagues already knew)

Real strategies from doctors who had to figure it out on their own.

    What’s good everyone!!

Get your popcorn ready. Get comfortable. We got a new episode of Dr. X Files. Remember, these are episodes of anonymous doctors speaking their truths in a format that makes them most comfortable.

This episode will blow your mind like the first one. When people talk about a “food chain” in medicine – let’s just say Doctor X is at the top of this food chain. She is highly specialized, well-compensated, and extremely satisfied with her career/lifestyle balance. This wasn’t the case a couple of years ago.

Decisions we all make to survive residency, can turn into pathologic lifestyle choices later as an attending. Well, this caught up to Dr. X early as an attending. Some of these decisions are rooted in people-pleasing and avoidance of conflict. Either way, don’t judge we’ve all been there.

Dr. X explicitly details how her decisions led her to sign a contract that was not very detailed, felt uncomfortable asking for market value for her skills, and put self-care on the backburner. She also talks about how her reputation was almost ruined. Dr. X ain’t no punk though. She became the heroine of her own story and gives a masterclass on how she saved her career and is living her best life!!!

For this Ask Dr. Nii segment, Dr. Nina Lum jumps on to help answer questions from our international medical graduate students. We’re going to answer two questions: 1. In what order should I take my step tests, especially in light of Step 1 going to pass/fail?; 2. Can I realistically get into a US – based orthopedic surgery residency as an IMG?

    What’s good everyone,

Meet Dr. Kwadwo Kyeremanteng. He comes from north of the border and is a physician formally trained in critical care medicine and palliative care. His research focuses on making the ICU more efficient and improving access to palliative care services. To achieve this, he founded the Resource Optimization Network, a multidisciplinary research group working to reduce health spending in this area without compromising care. Dr. K, as he is fondly called, is a leading contributor helping the department to achieve its vision of shaping the future of Medicine.

Recently, he joined the physician podcast family with his popular show Solving Healthcare. Solving Healthcare is a podcast series featuring interviews and discussions on topics related to improving healthcare delivery in Canada based on the values of cost-effectiveness, dignity, and justice in healthcare. I gotta give him props, my man has been busy pumping out great content around Covid-19 and I definitely recommend you all subscribe to his podcast.

Dr. Kwadwo is on the hot seat today so we can learn more about him, why he started his show, and what are the differences in responses to COVID 19 between the US and Canada.

Match season just went by. What can be a joyous moment for many, can be soul-crushing for others. Recently a listener reached out to me and asked what to do when you don’t match. It’s been close to 13 years since I went through the match process. So, I brought on Dr. Berry Pierre to drop some knowledge for our listeners. Dr. Berry Pierre has been a guest on the show before, but he also serves as Program Director for Wellington Regional Medical Center Internal Medicine Program.

    What’s good everyone!!

That’s right! We are house hunting, but not for our permanent residence. We are jumping into real estate, trying to do our passive income thang! Here’s another cliché…we’re trying to build generational wealth. In all seriousness, this episode is the first of many in series where you’ll get to see what its like for the Darkos to go from hating real estate to future real estate moguls. What better way to keep us accountable by having you all along for the journey?

Education is power, so we decided to take the SemiRetiredMD course: Zero to Freedom Through Cashflowing Rentals. We definitely vouch for it and recommend you check it out:

SEND US A TEXT MESSAGE!!! Let Drs. Nii & Renee know what you think about the show!

    What’s good!

On the surface, David Fajgenbaum appears to have it all. He’s married, has a child, is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at The University of Pennsylvania. You don’t have to dig too deep to learn the determination of this man.

In medical school, David had death knocking on his door 5 times after being diagnosed with the extremely rare Castleman disease. Running out of treatment options, he took matters into his own hands by developing the Castleman Disease Collaborative Network, and also using an untested drug for his condition on himself which turned out to be the cure for his disease.

So, sitting on the hot seat for Docs Outside the Box ain’t a thing to him! He’s on to talk about his amazing story of persistence, believing in yourself, and creating your own silver linings in life!

He’s an author too! His book is Chasing My Cure: A Doctor’s Race To Turn Hope into Action
