    Docs Outside The Box

Hosts Dr. Nii (Ghanaian) and Dr. Renee (Haitian) are first-generation physicians who paid off $662,000 in student loans in 3 years – while figuring out contracts, career moves, and money management that their colleagues learned at home.

Every episode covers what first-gen docs need to know:

    • Contract negotiation and career decisions
    • Paying off debt without family financial guidance
    • Building wealth from scratch
    • The questions you don’t know to ask (but your colleagues already knew)

Real strategies from doctors who had to figure it out on their own.

Today you’re hear Part 1 of a discussion about what’s up with these peer-reviewed journals? Both the Journal of the American Heart Association and Journal of Vascular Surgery had to retract articles that had obvious biases and questionable methodology.

I’m joined by Drs. Kameron, Estell, & Amber to discuss this the only way we know how.

    What’s good everyone,

You know I like to keep it real on this podcast. On this episode you’ll get to listen in on us driving to look at a property. During this drive we’re going to talk about how “we run the numbers.” You may have heard to keep emotions out of investment property purchase decisions. That’s correct. We’ll take you through a quick primer of how we do it and then what happened when we put our first offer in.

Here are the concepts we discuss on this episode:

    • How to “run the numbers” to find out if a property is a good investment
    • What happened when we made our first offer
    • Sometimes you gotta listen to your gut

On today’s episode we’re going to talk about what Disability insurance will and won’t cover if you’re affected by Covid-19. Affected can mean different things ranging from being infected by the virus, to you having to close down your clinic for a significant time. Jamie Fleischner, President of Set For Life Insurance, jumps on the hot seat to explain what happens with disability claims during this pandemic time.

We also talk about if the income you bring in from a side hustle is protected by your policy. A definite must listen!!

    What’s good everyone,

Welcome back for the second installment of our real estate series. Remember, we’re taking you through the highs and lows of our journey into obtaining our first invest property. Make sure you check out Episode 171 where I talk about my first experience with being a landlord. Spoiler Alert: it sucked!!

On this episode, we pivot and talk about the foundational mindset needed to embrace real estate. Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki will serve as the backdrop for this discussion. I read it several years ago, but Dr. Renee consumed this in less than a day over a year ago – and she’s never been the same since.

Here are the concepts we discuss on this episode:

    • What job security really means if you’re employed
    • Thinking like an owner vs thinking like a consumer
    • Rich people don’t work for people. They make money work for them
    • Great opportunities are not seen with your eyes, they’re seen with your mind

A large part of providing good patient care is developing a trusting relationship. At times this may require an understanding of the nuances of your patient’s cultural and social makeup. Recent events bring to light the added pressure and marginalization that black and brown communities face just based on skin color alone.

Well on this episode, I got four docs who not only provide amazing care to their patients, but have done the work to identify and decrease how racism affects their patient population.

    Here’s our panel:

Dr. Kameron Matthews - Family Medicine

Dr. Italo Brown - Emergency Medicine

    Dr.Utibe Essien - Internal Medicine

Dr. Alden Landry - Emergency Medicine

We talk about how racism affects them personally and professionally. You’ll also learn in this episode:

    • Their opinions on healthcare disparities
    • Have we made progress over the past 50 years
    • Is there a magic healthcare legislation that can get rid of racialized healthcare disparities
    • Outcomes with Covid 19

Although you’ll find out that these issues aren’t new, hopefully, after listening you’ll be inspired to follow them and take similar action in your communities.

On this Ask Dr Nii segment, we’re going to dive deep into how old is too old to start medical school and continue into a career in surgery. One of our listeners submitted a voicemail asking since because he’s in his early thirties is it too late to go after his goal of becoming a surgeon.

I brought on Dr. David Hampton, Trauma Surgeon at the University of Chicago, to explain his non traditional route in medicine and engineering. That’s right! Dr. David has a Masters in Electrical Engineering & Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (a.k.a. MIT – BOOM!) We also get into his experiences caring for troops in the armed forces, as well as the advantages of being an older medical student!

“Don’t make emotional decisions about real estate,” and “Numbers matter!” These are going to be the important takeaways from today’s episode. Weeks ago, we told you that we wanted to document our journey into purchasing our first investment property together. Before we get into all the number crunching, calculus shit; you need to hear about our first experiences with real estate.

Dr. Renee had positive experiences around real estate. Me, not so much. It started with an emotional decision that led me down a 13-year rabbit hole of bad mistakes. I get it, you’re probably thinking “Yeah that’s not going to be me.” However, it’s really important to understand how someone can make these decisions. Consider this a cautionary tale!!
