Niamh Algar • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #315 Mar 04, 2020

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to EPISODE 315 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by the pure marvellous actor and delight NIAMH ALGAR!

You can tell even like 5 minutes in that Pip was proper excited about this one… And naturally he was right to be, as Niamh is fantastic if you didn’t already know! You may have seen her in the beautiful and powerful ‘The Virtues’ alongside Distraction Pieces spiritual godfather Stephen Graham, and if you did you will adore this chat as Niamh goes IN on the whole process. As always, any Shane Meadows talk is fascinating and this time is no exception, as we get the pure goodness and intrigue from the process of making such a show and the deep personal digging involved in Niamh’s transformation into Dinah. Not only that, there’s further confirmation of that ‘being the lead in your own story’ point that comes up here and there on the podcast, and some good chat about her role in Desiree Akhavan’s ‘The Bisexual’, working with Guy Ritchie and OF COURSE a good amount about her upcoming film ‘Calm With Horses’, alongside Barry Keoghan and Cosmo Jarvis. Full on gold. Enjoy.

Mae Martin • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #314 Feb 26, 2020

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to EPISODE 314 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by the fantastic in every way comedian, writer and actor MAE MARTIN!

A tremendous meetup of Pip and Mae, and dare I say a long overdue one at that… You’ll get to hear all about Mae in the greater scale and sense, from back in the day to… now… in the day…? Yeah that sounds fine to me… But yeah, everything from then to now, including what she is doing THIS VERY MOMENT, and by that of course I mean starring in the simultaneously hilariously funny and brutally honest Feel Good (well, coming in March), which looks set to blow up worldwide. So expect to hear it all from how to view the series (best served binged), the weirdness of editing trailers, getting the correct audience, Canada (Oh Canada), the process of getting a set together, Mae the character and Mae the person, sex scenes and writing a proudly LGBT show, humanising addition, the casting process, digging deep into personal history and the transition from Canada to London but SO MUCH MORE of course. Ladies and gentlemen, your new best friend, Mae Martin!

Rich Wilson • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #313 Feb 21, 2020

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to EPISODE 313 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by podcaster and very funny comic (and old pal) RICH WILSON!

You will have surely by now heard the fabulous ‘Insane In The Men Brain’ podcast… No? Well dear listener you must check yourself before an inevitable wrecking of one’s self and go listen immediately! Okay let’s all slow down… Start here and THEN go find it, as you will most definitely become a fast friend of Rich’s by the end of the chat. Rich is a loveable and very down to earth, honest guy who is out for goodness and wellbeing among all people, and it’s a pleasure to hear he and Pip catch up and talk about the good and bad of life in equal measure. A balance is reached, and there is very much a yin and yang feel throughout - from Brexit, to remembering to appreciate the luck of being a standup, to being a straight white male, living with a comedian and the dynamics involved, remakes of films, social media (where to even start on that one!), his early Fringe days in Edinburgh and learning from mistakes, honesty, inclusion of stories into his act, his own podcast and setup and how he got into it and his current show in Soho! Grand. Get yerself in there.

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to EPISODE 312 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by comedic musician and actor and man of many pseudonyms, GRAHAM FELLOWS!

Of course, one of the many said pseudonyms which you will surely know is John Shuttleworth, but you might be familiar with Jilted John, Brian Appleton and David Tordoff. At any rate, this is a fascinating conversation involving the creative process, workflow and inspiration which will appeal to anyone remotely interested in making awesome things. I’m sure this means YOU reading this! Having met Pip a while back in a cupboard (all will be revealed), they have a lot to catch up on and have secured a more roomy location for their chat this time round and what a chat it is… Graham has such an array of wisdom-filled nuggets at his disposal, and some evergreen advice and science for those who’ve been creating for years or are about to begin. From the ‘young man’s game’ of performing, to Fringe thoughts, being squeaky clean, his origins, “turkey tapes”, Sheffield, musical equipment, the Custard Cream diamond and SO much more. This is a cracking one, you’ll love it.

Michael Cashman • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #311 Feb 12, 2020

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to EPISODE 311 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by activist, author and actor (all the A’s), Michael Cashman! Sorry - let me correct that - Baron Cashman CBE!

An amazing meeting this week with Pip and Michael, a man whose experience and knowledge will come shining through immediately upon listening. As a founder of Stonewall (with Ian McKellen), ex-member of European Parliament, activist and former actor (those of us who grew up on Eastenders will remember him as Colin), his life has been a genuine document of ups and downs, highs and lows, but all navigated with love, conviction and positivity. His story is moving, uplifting and at times incredibly unfair, but as you will hear - from all of this, pure goodness has been his reward. Over 30 years of his journey has been underpinned by long term partner Paul, who is unfortunately no longer with us but as you’ll hear, is spoken of by Michael with such love and compassion and it’s pretty much impossible to not be stirred by - well, the whole conversation, let’s be frank. The rest is yours to discover - listen, learn, and become better acquainted with a strong force for good in the world. Welcome, Michael!

His book 'One Of Them' is available now on Bloomsbury!

Robert Eggers • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #309 Jan 29, 2020

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to EPISODE 309 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! Cinematic excellence this week as Pip is joined by director of VVITCH and THE LIGHTHOUSE, it’s ROBERT EGGERS!

A real nice locked on an locked in chat with Robert, which goes in deep as you would want about all things Lighthouse, his latest directorial gem featuring Willem Defoe and Robert Pattinson. It’s a proper film-nerd paradise, as Robert opens up about his VVitch backgrounds, acting under environmental duress, the importance of casting, attitudes to rehearsal and how that informed performances, cinematography (thanks to Jarin Blaschke - pronounced ‘Jah-Rinn Blash-key’), the collaborative nature of the whole endeavour, aspect ratio and cinematic intention, the local history of a location, theatre vs film, flatulence (it’s in context) and all manner of movie magic. You’ll dig it and your intrigue for The Lighthouse will certainly be piqued - keep an eye out for that and ENJOY THIS CONVERSATION!

Rob Auton • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #308 Jan 22, 2020

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode 308 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! A very long awaited episode this week, as Pip has a proper chat with the wonderful Rob Auton, taking us inside the intriguing and thoroughly engaging mind of this spoken word and comedy great!

Kicking off with a full episode of Rob’s own podcast (which is easy as it’s only a couple of minutes long) to get you in the mix nicely, Pip and Rob get full on deep into a wide ranging conversation which will serve as a perfect introduction to him if you haven’t experienced Rob’s work already. Beginning with the recording of his Speech Development Records album ‘At Home With Rob’, the two get into everything including the difference between live and home performance, the weird alchemy of performance and presence, same setlist / different crowd, the ‘Takeshi’s Castle’ of getting it right, “to EX-press and not to IM-press”, the process of creating his themed shows, the absurdity but wonder of life and retaining a childlike fascination of it all, not lying, purity of thought, doing good in society and the world, self improvement and the knock-on effects thereof, science and religion and of course his own podcast! The Safdie Brothers • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #307 Jan 15, 2020

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode 307 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! A true cinematic treat for you this week as Pip is joined by directing siblings THE SAFDIE BROTHERS!

You may know them from the fantastic ‘Good Time’ (featuring a tightly wound Robert Pattinson), or maybe ‘Heaven Knows What’, but for sure you will be seeing much more of them with their new Netflix / cinema joint and Adam Sandler-starring ‘Uncut Gems’! Pip is a confirmed fan of course, and caught up with them on a very swift whirlwind run in London to talk all things film, from the time taken to get to this stage with the film, seeing the effect of it on an audience (especially comedically), the casting of Adam Sandler, the importance of voices, the use of extras in a far more involved sense, British acting and the realism of it, casting real people, working with musicians, using New York as a character, their intense focus on character even down to auditioning actors for one line appearances, and the sonic world of a film including the ‘Atmos’ mix which they go into. Amazing - proper film nerd’s one here and you’re not one, you might well be by the end. Enjoy!

Karl Pilkington • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #306 Jan 08, 2020

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode 306 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! WELCOME TO 2020 OFFICIALLY! You were cordially welcomed of course on New Year’s Day, but this feels like the first kind of ‘official’ episode of the decade. We all at Distraction Pieces Heights wish you nothing but the very best for the year ahead. Now let’s get it off to a proper start with the first guest of the year - it’s the uniquely great KARL PILKINGTON!

While some see Karl as the grumpy one of the original podcast trio consisting of him, Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, as you will hear in this podcast right here - it wasn’t necessarily grumpiness. Nor was it disinterest. Karl was looking through the world through a different prism, and certainly a prism of which we should all have a go at experiencing. It’s really nice hearing him get around ideas at leisure and with Pip (and us) as a sounding board, and definitely a really cool way of sharing the worldview of one of the more fascinating characters in the cast of podcasts, series and media in general. The two get into it all, from the origins of podcasting (kind of beginning with the Gervais one of course), to his thoughts on the promo run, to confidence, last minute tinkering, being a fan of real life and the fine line between that and comedy, ponderings on having children, the XFM days, being rubbed the wrong way by Ricky, his genuine curiosity, working on Derek, people being over familiar and a charming spider story to round it off. Brilliant. Enjoy!
