DJ Shadow • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #298 Nov 13, 2019

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode 298 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! Guess who’s coming… IT’S… Guess who’s coming… IT’S j-j-j-just your favourite DJ saviour / using and confusing beats that you never heard / since / 1990… Ladies and gentlemen, he’ll put a smile on your face like Ultra Brite - it’s DJ SHADOW!

“…Not every musical moment affects people the same way…”

A great rare treat for Shadow heads and crate digging nerds, and those who appreciate a good old fashioned music chat right here, but not only that - of course Pip and Shadow get to some really interesting ground when not dealing with the musical matters at hand, including his growing up in a remote town with limited access to hip hop which leads nicely onto how he eventually did find his way in, which then leads us into the whole Mo Wax side of things where he met and worked with James Lavelle extensively for a contained period (the foundation for which being laid by discovering NME, Melody Maker and also by the very intro of Nation Of Millions by Public Enemy - “LONDON, ENGLAND…!!!”), the Entroducing / Soldesides / Unkle / Brainfreeze eras, dealing with fan expectations and of course being taken out of context in hilarious style, nutritional value of rap from then and now, the current album ‘Our Pathetic Age’ and a breakdown of lead track ‘Rosie’, conjuring live sets and so much more which is all there for you to discover! Such a good one. You’ll love it.

Hear about it all, including how they took the film around the world, won awards, how sitcoms travel well, the reactions of different nationalities, the film being a whodunnit / Agatha Christie style murder mystery, the approach to direction, feels in the audition, everyone pulling in the same direction cast and crew-wise, character nuances, and a whole world of other goodness.

Fearne Cotton • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #295 Oct 30, 2019

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode 295 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! Pure broadcasting brilliance for you this week, as Pip is joined by TV and radio presenter and all round delight FEARNE COTTON!

This is the mirror side of a two podcast deal the two of them struck up, where Pip appeared on her ‘Happy Place’ podcast, so as you’ll witness, the driver is often interchangeable, but it’s all perfect as they get on just grand. Maybe it’s because they were born a month apart and have the same cultural touchstones - WHO KNOWS! Whatever the case, it’s a breeze of a podcast which touches on so much including a sentence which features Hanson and Led Zeppelin in the same breath (in fact I think it could be called an “Mmm Bop-cast” but that’s of no consequence), her intro into different kinds of music, being mates with Sarah Cawood and how she eventually got into gig going through her, Coldplay haters, the power of music shared on a mass scale, cathartic crying sessions, early days of her presenting on TV and growing up in front of the camera, presenting the Disney Club, still being treated as a kid in adult life, the old fashioned kid poop story which serves as a grounding device, how being a cool parent isn’t possible, her book ‘Happy’, losing her sense of self in her 20’s and regaining it later, social media, podcast therapy, changing one’s self in the midst of crisis and her work with CoppaFeel. But of course, SO much more. Lovely stuff from start to end. ENJOY!

Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode 292 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! A real treat this week by way of writer and actor heavyweight DAISY HAGGARD!

A proper nice chat right here is your gift, as Pip is joined by the writer of and actor in Back To Life and a whole bunch more (including a voice stint in a Harry Potter film - the key to knowing if someone has just skimmed her IMDB page!), and they have a grand old time getting down to the business of acting, film, cinema, movie, the whole bit. From pitching the series Back To Life (involving pub antics), to her reaction to feedback in general, the importance of collaborators, the memorable moment she got the call to say the show was being picked up, the whirlwind LA journey within a journey to promote said show, the balance of work and life, her dad being in cult horror classic Blood On Satan’s Claw, Man Stroke Woman, Breeders and all that’s to come! Lovely stuff.

Stamma special • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #293 Oct 20, 2019

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode 293 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! As you may know, Pip is a patron of the Stamma organisation, and this week’s bonus Monday episode is a Stamma special!

He is joined by three guests, each having their own individual chat sections with Pip. The guests are George, Owen and Natalie, each stammerers in their own right, and Pip gets into their stories beginning with what they do, and getting slowly into the deeper stories… It’s fascinating to hear everyone relating their relationships with stammers and stutters, which involves their early memories of dealing with it, peoples’ reactions to it and how they were made to realise they were different whether they liked it or not. There are many common factors as you will hear, and really one of the main takeaways is that people would do well to exercise patience when talking to those with stammers. But it’s great to hear every individual chat and what is unveiled - a really interesting insight into the world of stammering, stuttering and the Stamma organisation as a whole.

With Bill’s new appreciation of the early morning start, and enjoying those gems that are the early hours of the day, he joins Pip for some ace earlier-than-afternoon chattalogical goodness which includes so much, from back in the day to… now in the day? You know what I’m getting at. So you can absolutely expect to hear all manner of awesome including how he’s well up for the promo run, with a renewed appreciation for the talking element of it all, his newfound discipline - or that is to say ‘sharpened’ discipline, the new series of ‘In The Long Run’ in which he stars alongside creator Idris Elba (on Sky NOW!), his approach to the series and he tries not to install his own comic leanings on the proceedings, the ‘biomechanics’ of comedy and the District 9 theory, the importance of collaboration, how awesome Idris Elba is, the shock of coming from the mainly white Westcountry to multicultural London, Bill’s lightbulb moment for comedy at a London vegan anarchist commune, influences and respect for tradition, the DVD boom of the 00’s and how he got caught in it, the great equaliser of a shared artistic experience, and with that - the importance of sharing, Never Mind The Buzzcocks and QI and all kinds more! Jack Sexsmith (part 2/2) • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #290 Oct 02, 2019

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode 290 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! Part 2 of an extensive 2 parter here for you with the wrestling phenomenon JACK SEXSMITH!

To quote Curtis Mayfield, “Can I get a bit deeper…?” - and part 2 of this full on chat with Jack is the perfect example of where a chat gets that little bit deeper, so be prepared for some honesty, truth and observation on all things wrestling. But as Pip mentions at the start and end and at points on the last episode, we can all get along wherever we stand on the wrestling scale. Dividing factions will come into play under whatever the unifying umbrella is, and wrestling isn’t immune to it, but everyone can definitely stand together within it. Anyway - as promised, this is a proper goody and the ideal accompaniment to part 1. Jack goes in on his merch game, regrets, acceptance and different worlds of sexuality, the piece in The Sun, the current state of British Wrestling, Jimmy Havoc, adventures in indie wrestling, his WWE tryout and tricky politics of big companies, divisions within fan universes, and a healthy dose of potentially controversial wrestling scientificial nuggets. The perfect roundup to a proper action packed two parter.
