Mum & Mummer w/ Amy & Harry • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #323 Apr 28, 2020

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode 323 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by the hosts of the brand new Distraction Pieces Network podcast, Mum & Mummer - it’s Amy and Harry!

This is the PERFECT opportunity to get yourself better or newly acquainted with Amy and Harry, if you haven’t had the chance yet. Mum & Mummer is a fantastic podcast which deals with the honesty and rawness of being a mum in the modern world, and all of the weird and wonderful baggage that brings. They are perfectly placed to host such a podcast, having been through many an up and down along the journey of being parents, and you’ll be able to hear about what’s in store for you with the show through this great chat with Pip. Pip and Amy go way back, and so it’s also a really cool chance for Pip to become better acquainted with Harry, and as they become fast friends, the whole chat is a really entertaining whirlwind of goodness to prep you for another ace show on the network.

OH! Also - there’s a bonus contest in the intro set by Pip based on the amazing North Star Rising series, on which he lends his voice - it’s an entirely kid friendly series at that, as is the contest, so any parent folk or those who know creative kids (or grown ups!), get yerself involved…

Ask Pip v.9 (part 1/2) • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #322 Apr 21, 2020

Show notes

A two parter at that! Come on now. On this one, the format is tried and tested and never fails, although in this occasion Pip is indoors getting his isolation on, and pacing around his living room while answering those burning questions from you the dear listeners. Some truly good stuff here this time, with some cool news about a new project Pip’s been working on (North Star Rising), as well as all things acting, music, inspiration and how to soldier through lockdown like a true veteran. Oh and I get invited into proceedings too for some microphone wind-guard assistance, so that’s cool! Always happy to oblige. That was my whole Mastermind chosen subject and whatnot. You ever see me kill it on Mastermind back in 1987 on the subject of wind-guards? Yo. YOUTUBE THAT ISH.

So without further text yammerings, please enjoy the gawd Piplo as he comes correct with the answers. Yer welcome. And in all seriousness, we here at Distraction Pieces hope you and yours are doing well as can be, and that things are going good with you. Ups and downs innit. Anyway, all the best to you. Big love XXX

Tim Key • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #321 Apr 14, 2020

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to EPISODE 321 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! Pure delights this week with a pre-lockdown recording from when Pip sat down with poet, writer and comic TIM KEY!

Just to re-iterate, this was recorded pre-lockdown, all up in the same room next to each other in person and everything. There will be NO flouting of the rules in the Distraction Pieces dojo. Anyway - all of this aside, prepare for some lovely times as Pip and Tim share gifts, anecdotes and wisdom from the world of spoken word and poetry, as well comedy, Edinburgh Fringe and gig history in general. Everything from finding one’s voice, to the performer / audience contract, the acting universe, imposter syndrome, putting yourself on the line, Tim’s experience working with Steve Coogan / Alan Partridge and so much more besides. Beautiful distractions all the way. Enjoy!

Lianne La Havas • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #319 Mar 31, 2020

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to EPISODE 319 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! A beautiful chat this week with the truly wonderful singer songwriter LIANNE LA HAVAS!

This one was recorded pre-apocalypse so it was a real life face to face interaction (seriously, do you remember those…?), and as such I think you’ll really enjoy this even more than usual as Pip and Lianne get along great, and that’s been a true strength of the Distraction Pieces Podcast - the face to face element of it all. Well, while that may temporarily alter here and there, the fact of the matter is that Lianne is a beautiful presence and it’s a joy to hear her talk about her experiences in the music game, along with the wisdom she’s gained along the way. Everything from being on a label as opposed to being indie, the weird stage between writing and performing, emotions and process behind the record, unconventional family setups, being a shy kid and keeping her skills behind closed doors for a good chunk of her childhood years, being raised by her Jamaican grandparents as well as her education and interests, oh and also - I mean take this with a grain of salt and act all aloof or whatever but she was also really good mates with Prince. I mean, like, whatever. Y’know. Of course if there was a font colour for sarcasm the last couple of sentences would be glowing right now. MADNESS. ENJOY!!!

Isolation Recommendations • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #318 Mar 25, 2020

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to EPISODE 318 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! From the Speech Development Compounds, this is Scroobius Pip’s Isolation Recommendations!

Okay - just to first note, those exclamation points are not there to in any way make light of the current situation. But I tried it without them and it just seemed really solemn so I hope you don’t mind my editorial decision. Anyway - details aside - all of us at the Distraction Pieces labs (which is conveniently entirely remote) wish you the very best, and all the positivity and sanity you can handle. It’s difficult for all of us, and the whole situation is a true bastard, to put it about as mildly as one can without getting into expletives. But we must try and find and go in on any positives we can, and thankfully, mercifully, there are a great many out there - hopefully most of which you’ll be able to enjoy from your bunkers, wherever you find yourselves. So here is a full length collection of entertainment that fits in perfectly with the name of the podcast. Distraction Pieces. Enjoy, bring em up on Whatsapp and phone conversations, have fun. And stay safe as you possibly can. We’re in this together XXX

Ashley Walters • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #317 Mar 18, 2020

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to EPISODE 317 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! Following on from last week’s multi-disciplined guest, Pip is joined this week by emcee turned actor ASHLEY WALTERS!

Okay - in case you don’t recognise that name right there immediately, let’s bring you up to speed. ASHER D FROM SO SOLID. Ring a bell? DUSHANE FROM TOP BOY! Getting through yet? RICKY FROM BULLETPROOF? Don’t make me get all Biff from Back To The Future and knock on your head to make sure you’re on the same page… Anyway - it’s Ashley Walters! A fascinating chat and as with a lot of Distraction Pieces episodes, one that feels like it’s been on the cards for a minute. The two get down to it and cover it all from getting in shape and being more mindful re: bodies, representation and the path to Bulletproof, working with Noel Clarke and becoming his pal, working with Carol Jackson from Eastenders (sorry, Lindsey Coulson), being multi-disciplined from a young age, The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, time spent in prison and lessons learned on release, Top Boy, So Solid, all that good stuff and TOO MUCH to fit into a write up here. You’ll love it. GO IN!

Cosmo Jarvis • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #316 Mar 11, 2020

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to EPISODE 316 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! Some acting and musical glory for you this week as Pip is joined by the brilliant COSMO JARVIS!

Following on perfectly from last week’s episode with Niamh Algar, in that she and Cosmo star in ‘Calm With Horses’, which is coming to cinemas very soon - the perfect follow on episode right here! You may know Cosmo from his starring turns in Lady Macbeth, or maybe Peaky Blinders - his presence leaves a long lasting impression in whatever you will see him in, and it’s a treat to hear him talk about the craft and hear his insights into it, especially when mirrored with Pip’s. So kicking things off with some good pizza chat up-top, we lead effortlessly into his dealings with type 1 diabetes, which blossoms into the power of encouragement and learning on the job, life changing moments which somehow don’t change life, the ease of dipping your toe into the creative output pool and whether it’s a good thing or not, indeed the forthcoming Calm With Horses, and loads of respectful talk about his co-stars and actors / directors he’s worked with. Excellent stuff, great to hear from him!
