122 Is Your Front Desk Missing Something? with Mary Beth Bajornas : Dentistry Uncensored with Howard Farran Aug 18, 2015
    Show notes

"Some practices don't even have voice mail. They just ring incessantly when they're not in the office". If this sounds even remotely familiar, Mary Beth has your solution.

Necessity is the mother of inventin'

Dental Support Specialties was founded in 2008 by Mary Beth Bajornas. With twenty years business management experience, Mary Beth had been working as a business manager in a dental practice, when she gave birth to her fourth child, daughter Alison, at 24 weeks gestation. After an 82 day NICU stay, Mary Beth and her husband were able to bring Alison home, but Mary Beth resigned her position to make Alison and her therapies her full time job.

As Alison made remarkable progress, Mary Beth discovered freelance opportunities in marketing and website creation, and started a media company.

When a dental consultant asked her about virtual assisting, it struck a chord with Mary Beth. She researched everything she could about virtual assisting and grew her company into Superior Assisting and Solutions. From emergency physician scheduling for a local hospital to other virtual admin jobs for a variety of companies, Mary Beth was amazed at her passion for providing this type of virtual assistance.

Her dental consultant friend thought she would be a perfect fit to help one of his clients with front desk training. And that was her first virtual dental assisting case—Mary Beth trained the team over the phone, which led to an assignment of covering the practice’s phones on Fridays (when the staff was out of the office). That success encouraged her to focus solely on dental practices.

After receiving his master’s degree, Joe Bajornas, Mary Beth’s husband, resigned his teaching/coaching position to take over as CFO and business manager at Dental Support Specialties.

Using social media as a marketing and referral source, Dental Support Specialties is now in over 44 states and Canada, with an excellent, highly skilled team of dental support specialists helping to provide productive client support.

From a small home office, to offsite headquarters in March 2012, Dental Support Specialties expanded again in February 2015 into a 3700-square foot facility.

Dental Support Specialties continues to lead the way in providing virtual dental administrative support, taking pride in providing exceptional, productive, proactive and personalized care for each one of their clients and looks forward to continued growth in the dental support industry.

121 Modern Practice Management with Bruce Stephenson : Dentistry Uncensored with Howard Farran Aug 17, 2015
    Show notes

Practice management doesn't have to be big and scary. Bruce Stephenson, DDS shows that it might be easier than you think to do it well.

I graduated from dental school in 1977 and opened a practice from scratch. We grew over the years and in 2008 one of my associates bought half the practice with the understanding that I would retire in 5 years and sell him the second half. Well, it actually took 6 years but now my former associate, then partner, is now my landlord! I continue to practice in the same office, renting space for my 3-day per week Invisalign only practice. At one point in my dental career I also founded an IT company just for dentists (a lot more work than fixing teeth!) so part of my “rent” now is doing IT support for his practice.

Over the years I became interested in not only computers but practice management and have been lecturing and consulting on these subjects since about 1986. I have spoken at the ADA and AGD annual meetings and continue to do (occasional) seminars and webinars.

Since I “retired” in June of 2013 and have become even more involved in our practice management consulting business with my former office manager. We currently have clients all over the country that we “meet” with using Skype and GoToMeeting. It’s fun and very interesting. Although each practice is unique, it seems we are all stumbling over many of the same rocks in the road.

Last year we published our first book, “How to Run a Dental Practice,” which has not made it to the best seller list yet but does get very positive feedback from dentists. We discuss just how dramatically dentistry has changed in the last 5 years and how practice management systems need to change to keep a practice profitable. Our next book (if we ever get around to it!) will be titled “Dentistry 3.0,” to further reflect these changes.

It's never a surprise to find out women are immeasurably capable. Women leaders are all over the place. The fact is, however, they're not called "women leaders"; they're "leaders".

I am a practicing general dentist and the founder of Dentistry for Kids and Adults, a multi-location group practice with emphasis on family dental care and pediatrics.

After graduating from USC School of Dentistry in 2000, I spent several years working in private practices before opening my first dental practice in 2002. Later, I also started a software company. Our software is called YAPI and it's designed to help dentists transition to a truly paperless environment and streamline office workflow.
