Kris completed her undergraduate work at Oregon State University and went to Oregon Health Sciences University for dental school. The Treatment Coordinator Experience with Crystal Pion Feb 01, 2021
    Show notes

You can say a treatment coordinator is a lot like being a sales person, but instead of closing deals, they close dental procedures for patients as they are scheduled by dentists. Their role is to make sure the schedule is followed and every patient has a complete treatment plan. More than planning, they are also critical when it comes to bridging the communication gap between dentist and patient. Because of her innate skill set and time management skills, it wasn’t difficult to see how Crystal Pion would not only take charge of this role, but revel in it.
Today, Crystal joins us to share what it’s like being a treatment coordinator for my practice. She describes what her role entails, the responsibilities assigned to her, and what she’s learned from it. She discusses what her daily routine looks like and how the pandemic has affected the practice as a whole. She explains the importance of communication, especially now that everyone is going virtual. Crystal also shares what her job was like before joining my team and her thoughts on our practice.

3 KPIs All Practices Should Be Tracking Jan 25, 2021
    Show notes

Monitoring business KPIs is critical not just for making sure the practice turns a profit, but to see any potential room for growth as well as to address any weak points. KPIs can also tell you the effects of any changes in your practice and will help determine whether or not these changes should be kept or revisited. The problem is there are just too many things to monitor and take note of in a business. What are the important KPIs every business owner should track?
Today, I discuss the three important KPIs your practice should track to grow in 2021. I share what to track for general dentistry services like hygiene. I explain why many appointments don’t go on schedule and what you can do to make sure your KPIs aren’t fluctuating due to no-shows. I also describe why I’m not fond of upfront payments for my patients and the benefits of in-office payment plans.
"If you make your goal for the first 3-5 months of 2021 to focus on these three key indicators, you will see your practice move in a better direction."- Tarun Agarwal

The Four Scarce Resources in Any Business Jan 04, 2021
    Show notes

Running a growing business requires plenty of resources, arguably much more than starting one. The only difference is, you already know what you’re doing once you’re in the growth phase, and the problem now has shifted to resource management. Just like any business, dental practices also have a scarcity issue when it comes to four key resources: Time, mental bandwidth, physical strength, and economics.

How should a business owner manage these four key resources?

Today, I discuss my thoughts on the four scarce resources in any business and what many business owners should focus on to manage them. I share what I think most practitioners get wrong when it comes to business efficiency and explain why the ultimate goal of a business owner shouldn’t be to get more patients. I describe what ‘survival mode’ is in business and why it’s not advisable to be hyper focused on survival. I also share the reason why the economics of a business should be the last priority.
"There's a lot of focus on efficiencies in a dental practice, but efficiencies don't matter if you don't schedule differently."
This week on T-Bone Speaks Dentistry Podcast:

    • Updates on 3D-Dentists and what we're planning for the podcast in 2021.
    • My thoughts on how many define balance and how we should define it.
    • How to keep your balance as consistent as possible.
    • What a real efficient practice should look like for many practitioners.
    • The one flaw that efficiencies are built around.
    • Why dentists shouldn't aim for more patients in their practice.
    • Why the brain should be thought of as a pipe.
    • The importance of maintaining physical strength as we age.
    • Why I believe economics should be the last thing we think about.
    • How survival mode kills businesses... and people.

2020 Recap: The Hard Lessons We Learned Dec 28, 2020
    Show notes

What 2020 brought our industry and our lives was not exactly what we all thought a year ago, but it wasn’t all doom and gloom, either. We’ve seen a lot of innovations in the past few months, many of which were likely forced early on, but people have since adapted to this “new normal,” and we’ll very likely take it with us as we enter 2021. How did our practice adjust to the abrupt changes? What were the adjustments we needed to spearhead? How did the pandemic affect us professionally and personally?

Today, I discuss how the pandemic has forced our industry to innovate and what our practice did to not just keep our doors open, but to try to hit as many of the goals we set out a year ago. I share why we needed to shuffle our team amidst the pandemic and explain why I can’t fully get rid of insurance in my practice. I describe the lessons we learned as a team and how we’re not better prepared when it comes to anything virtual. I also share how the pandemic personally hit me and my family and explain why, despite these challenges and setbacks, I’m still thankful.

Owning a Practice vs Owning a Business Dec 21, 2020

We all have different ways to run our practice. Some opt to partner with another entrepreneur and work on their own; others buy an old practice and go from there. Regardless of how you start, what matters is as the practice grows, so should the time you have for yourself. The more profitable your practice becomes, the more it should be run like a business.

Stop Doing Fillings and Crowns (And What You Should Do Instead) Dec 14, 2020
    Show notes

Many, if not all, dentists consider fillings and crowns as their bread and butter. It can feel rather mundane and repetitive, but it’s one of the most in-demand services in our practice. However, there is so much more to our profession than to simply fill holes and gaps all day. This is why, in an interview for the Dental Guys podcast, I advocated for the reduction of fillings and crowns.

In today’s episode, I share a replay of my guest appearance on the Dental Guys podcast. I discuss why I decided to reduce the number of crowns and fillings in my practice. I explain other services you can use as a substitute and how you can still offer crowns and fillings without doing it yourself. I also describe what my savings plan looks like, how I handle medical billing, and how we should seek to disrupt our industry.
