What this episode is all about and how it can help you:-

    • Realise what true balance is when riding
    • See that both you and your horse are responsible for balance
    • Begin working on establishing balance
    • See how maintaining balance is a long term goal

It is a pretty important element of riding; if only from a 'staying on' point of view. However, as you well know, balance is so much more than keeping the horse between yourself and the ground. more...

1104 | Showing Up as Trainer For Your Horse Jul 08, 2019
    Show notes

What this episode is all about & how it can help you:-

    • Realise that contact is a result of other things
    • Understand what 'forwardness' is and why it is so important
    • See the role you play in the forward and the contact
    • See how it should be present in every element of the ride, even halt

Becoming a trainer. It can feel uncomfortable to think of yourself as this for your horse. Yet, if you are expecting your horse to do what you are asking him to do, well this is essentially what you are. The discomfort often stems from the realisation that being a 'trainer' comes with a lot of responsibility. You are now responsible for how well you communicate your wishes to your horse more...

1103 | Forwardness is Essential for Contact Jul 01, 2019

    • Understand what 'forwardness' is and why it is so important
    • See the role you play in the forward and the contact
    • See how it should be present in every element of the ride, even halt

Contact. You know how important it is to your overall conversation with your horse. However, for many riders, contact can be elusive! It comes and goes without any real impact being made from it. Time and again I see riders in the arena, sawing the mouth off their poor horse in a desperate misguided attempt to achieve 'on the bit'. However, if 'on the bit' is the goal, it is important that we go back to the drawing board first. more...

What this episode is all about & how it can help you:-

    • Understand what inside and outside are when it comes to your aids
    • Take the confusion out of applying your aids correctly
    • Get started reframing how you think and apply your aids
    • Think and ride with your horse...

Do you often find yourself in the arena, ready for action... But without much of a plan for what that action will look like?! Don't worry, you're not alone. In fact, this is the single biggest challenge faced by equestrians - and one that many don't even realise they have to begin with. Riding for the sake of riding is great initially. However, as time went on, you will inevitably find yourself wanting 'more' from your time in the saddle. That 'more' can be achieved by developing your relationship, both ridden and on the ground, with your horse. more...

1101 | Understanding Your Inside and Outside while in the Saddle Jun 17, 2019

    • Understand what inside and outside are when it comes to your aids
    • Take the confusion out of applying your aids correctly
    • Get started reframing how you think and apply your aids
    • Think and ride with your horse...

There is one thing that I notice time and again when working with riders in the arena... The confusion that shows up regarding left and right. Now, bear with me here; of course these riders understand and know their left from their right. Most riders over the age of 6 can do that. However, the confusion seems to occur when coupling left and right with a specific aid. Such as left leg, or right hand. Even 'track right' or 'ask for flexion to the left' seems to throw many riders off their game. more...

1100 | What Not to Do When Riding a Fresh Horse Jun 10, 2019

What this episode is all about & how it can help you:-

    • Understand why you need to remain relaxed
    • Make sure you have a plan before you begin
    • Refrain from the one thing most riders do which actually makes things worse...!
    • Consider why 'out' is often better than 'in' where energy is concerned

If you ride horses for long enough and you will, without fail, experience 'that' feeling. The one where you're in the saddle and you just know there is an inevitable explosion building underneath you! The energy levels are high. However, usually, your enthusiasm for that same energy is not quite as high at all. There are all sorts of reasons your horse may be fresh. The weather can often play a big part. more...

1099 | Considerations when Looking for Your New Horse Jun 03, 2019
    Show notes

What this episode is all about & how it can help you:-

    • Get clear on your goals & your resources before starting your search
    • Realise how important it is to do your 'groundwork' first, before riding
    • Overcome resistance to riding a 'new horse'
    • Make a better decision that both you & your new horse will be happy with

One of the most exciting, and yet nerve wreaking times for riders; finding your 'new horse'. Most riders, at some point in their riding journey, will eventually find themselves making an appointment to go see a new horse. It might be to lease or to buy. What is important to remember here is that whatever decision you make, it will have an impact on your riding for years to come. It will also impact the life of the horse. more...

1098 | Using Lateral Work to Improve Your Walk May 27, 2019

What this episode is all about & how it can help you:-

    • Recognise what a 'stuck' walk looks and feels like
    • Understand why the walk can so easily deteriorate in horses
    • See the benefit of using lateral work to begin improving the walk
    • Start to become more aware of how you are asking questions of your horse

Funny how, sometimes, it is the more basic things that cause us to become 'stuck'. The walk is a good example of this! It is probably the first thing most of us do on a horse, and yet, it often becomes a real 'sticking point' for horse and rider. Here is how lateral work can help get you and your horse unstuck. more...

1097 | Using the Centre Line to Stratigically Improve Your Riding May 20, 2019
    Show notes

What this episode is all about & how it can help you:-

    • Know how you are riding the centre line at the moment
    • Realise that you and your horse are one 'container'
    • Understand what a channel is in your riding
    • Use your centre line to develop your overall riding skills

Do you see the centre line as being a means to an end? Somewhere you have to travel in order to take you to somewhere else? Imagine if you began getting a little more strategic about each journey down the centre line... Every time you ride your horse in an arena, there is a good chance that one of the most 'worn' paths is the one down the middle of that arena. more...
