Lowell lives with his awesome and wonderful wife Susie, no kids of their own (but they have had 32 foster teenage boys) near Minneapolis, MN. His passion for coaching was developed as he coached varsity soccer for Orono High School for 14 years and then 3 years coaching a Nordic Combined skier in two Winter Olympics and one World Cup. Then he turned his coaching passion to young men to mentor them in how to live free from sin and bondage. He personally coaches, mentors, and disciples young men.

He also loves Jeeping, hiking and generally playing in the mountains and spending as much time as possible at the world headquarters for DMU. (A cabin in the mountains of Colorado)

He is personally submitted to Jesus Christ and committed to making disciples who become spiritual warriors for Christ.

Key Quotes (Full Transcript of Conversation Here)
    • 09:51 - "I just pray. The best youth work ever did, I pray, they show up."
    • 14:33 - "After a while, I got real tired of wussy Christians. I mean, it's sad. We're all commanded to make disciples, and we do a really poor job of making disciples. We think it's, to me, it was like disciple making wasn't a list of things you have to learn about or a program. You know, if it was if I was going to make disciples, I had to share my life with them and they could see how I live and that's a bigger point."
    • 15:29 - "The most important thing I would love to tell fathers is that the spiritual authority that they have in the home is not to boss people around or be an authority like we think of it. Spiritual authority is to protect their family. If he's protected really well in that way he has a lot of spiritual authority to protect his children so that Satan doesn't have the legal rights to go add his kids through the father."

And so it's a mutual journey toward intimacy that gets better and better."

Key Quotes (Full Transcript of the Conversation Here)
    • 13:05 - "And so that idea of making an organic... rhythm of your life is what I think we modeled through these ministries growing up in that what we aim to bring in our families... we make it every day, all that we did."
    • 20:55 - "There's a ton of parallels between the two (doing something physical and fatherhood.) You know, we could talk all day about these parallels. It does require a degree of toughness, at least a decision to be tough. You know, fathering is not for wimps. It's maybe one of the toughest challenges you'll have to do, but obviously the most worthwhile challenge you will also do."
    • 26:21 - "But what we're saying by inoculation is that it is good to give them one, a taste of the real thing, so real faith in your home. So that can grow, grow food in their heart. So one, give them a taste of the real thing, really practice what you preach... mentor and be that example. And then two... to expose them to things within your house, expose them to ideologies within your house, expose them to contrary thoughts within your house, bring people into your house who are not like you, who don't look like you, who don't think like you, who may not even act like you might not even like them."

Key Quotes (Full Transcript of Conversation Here)
    • 2:21 - "Well, as the Lord said to me one time... as long as you're following me, you will always be in transition. And what that means to me, is I am more deeply in love with my wife now, soon to be 56 years, than I've ever been. And the reason for it is 2nd Corinthians 5:17. If any man is in Christ, he's a new creation. And that means tomorrow morning when I wake up, I'm going to be married to a new creation."
    • 6:39 - "Jesus teaches what we should be but then He makes us what He teaches we should be. I cannot do it without Himself and that's where my dependency is more than it's ever been."
    • 16:59 - "I think the most important thing... I know that the hardest thing in the Christian life is to let God love you. And I believe the second hardest thing in the Christian life is to be still."

Key Quotes (Full Transcript of the Conversation)
    • 3:34 - "God takes us to mountaintop to give us a vision, but nothing is ever made reality on a mountaintop, there's rock up there, nothing grows. It always takes us in the valley for the dream and the vision to become reality." - Oswald Chambers
    • 4:51 - "I shouldn't be talking about them... it's not pride, I'm just so grateful. And the Lord said, It's okay, I brag about my Son all the time, and the Father brags on Jesus. And when our children have followed the Lord and done what they were created to find, what they were made for... Ephesians 1:3...He called before the creation of the world, He saw us and called us to become holy and blameless. If God called you to that, then He also called you with a destiny. And it's tragic that most young people today, many, many people today work jobs they cannot stand and they've never been able to do that one thing they were created for."
    • 7:25 - 'So many times when God gives you the vision, it's gonna happen, it's in the future, it will take place, but He doesn't tell you when, because it's not so much that I had a vision, God has to shape me into the place of the vision. It's what He has to do in me. Because one of the greatest things is for God to be able to give you something without what He gives you having you."
    • 17:29 - "The key to communication is identification... The greatest communicator in all the world is Jesus Christ. But his communication was slow, on the money, because he spoke the language of the people. When he spoke to women, he talked about yeast and bread. When he spoke to farmers, it was different soil conditions and what kind of crop. And fisherman, pearl of great price in the nets. And so he spoke the language of the people. And I think one of the key things and communicated with my children is being able to speak to their world and bring them into my world."

Key Quotes (Full Transcript of the Conversation Here)
    • 6:54 - "It took that... deep, dark, low moment, rock bottom moment for my father, for me to see him completely differently than I ever saw him... Even though I knew about forgiveness, I understood it as far as Jesus and me... I needed to ask for forgiveness of my sins. I wasn't able to do that other part that Jesus talks about forgiving others who trespass against us... And that moment, that day, that low point, as I heard his voice on the phone, I saw my dad the way God sees him and me as his child. And I developed something that I never have from my dad before... Empathy is the great game changer and I never had empathy for my dad until that low moment. And that empathy led me to a point where I verbally finally said to him, Dad, I forgive you..."
    • 14:00 - "My brothers are amazing dads, so I watch them... I see how great of a dad that they both are and I think only God could do that. But the ripple effects of... ten total Romano kids that are going to hopefully see a different future than what we had to see because of God, but the decisions that thankfully we all, all three of us made to not go down the same path that our father did... I believe there's chain breaking and discipleship making."
    • 19:54 - "Though, my emotions are not always reality, I've learned that my emotions can point me toward reality, especially re-occurring emotions.... Our emotions can be an enter sign for the internal work that we need to do, we have to do, or an exit sign for a situation that we need to get out of."
