My Thoughts Monday #12-Chase Campbell, Indiana Fever-Building and Maintaining Buy In With Athletes. Jan 08, 2018
    Show notes

“That was something I learned early on in my career. When I tried to walk into a program and lay the hammer down and pretend like I was the one in charge, and that it was my way or the highway. That usually doesn’t go over that well, at least from what I found out.”
In this week’s My Thoughts, Indiana Fever Head Strength and Conditioning Coach Chase Campbell discusses some methods he’s used for building and sustaining buy in. This “buy in”, in his opinion, starts with having an athlete led culture, which leads into him discussing how getting to really know your athlete’s impacts buy in. His third point he touches upon is learning to speak the same language of the athletes. Communication is key, so you need to know how to get points across to them. The final thing he touches upon is giving autonomy in training and how it can be utilized to increase buy in with your athletes.
    Who is Chase Campbell?
Chase Campbell is a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA) and is currently the Head Strength & Conditioning Coach for the Indiana Fever (WNBA). Prior to his current position, Chase made stops as an assistant strength & conditioning coach at Butler University, Miami University (OH), and Ball State University. Chase holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Science and a Master of Arts degree in Sports Performance, both from Ball State University. Find him on social media at:

Episode 114: Matt Wenning, Ludus Magnus- A Look at Training, Both Present and Future Jan 02, 2018
    Show notes

“Obviously you can train harder when your younger but the philosophy is the same, which is, where are you weak and how do we fix these area’s so you’re less prone to injury, so we can train harder?”
Matt Wenning joins us to discuss programming and the direction the world of training needs to move. After starting out with a brief background, Matt dives right into discussing some of the issues he sees in the world of training today. He touches upon the complexity of training, people rushing results, and the role of programming in recovery. Having learned from some of the best of the best in the iron game, Matt has been guided by and learned from fantastic coaches helping him build his programming. His “planning” is extremely similar even looking across platforms with tactical athletes (fire fighters and military), team sport athletes, general population, or lifters. He starts out looking specify at their weaknesses and the most common issues/injuries that occur within the sport/activity. This includes exactly how he breaks this down and looks at it to adjust training for both single clients and how he alters it for larger groups. Matt then breaks down some aspects of his programming including specific exercises he has selected. His break down of this includes exercise selection, reasons he selects those means, and what he is looking for to determine that selection. This leads him right into where he see’s specialized/specific exercise in the realm of training and why he feels these are moving further away from where we need to train people based on the obesity epidemic, and how that’s impacting basic training. He finishes out with sharing with us the direction training is going and the reasons behind it.

Episode 113: Mladen Jovanović- Cultural differences around the world and there impact on coaching Dec 26, 2017
    Show notes

“I don’t believe we can completely ditch the intuitiveness of the coaches. You want to use that data to help you, maybe to give you more question than give you concrete answers. It’s a combination of intuitive thinking and data driven facts.”
Mladen Jovanović sits down with us to talk about his experiences traveling the world as a coach in each corner of the world. We start out discussing cultures around the world, and how those differences impact how you SHOULD work with athletes. This leads him to his lessons learned from coaching in five different countries on three continents.
He then breaks down how different sports prepare, both in the micro and macro, and how he sees the training and sport science practices in the regions he has been in, the influences, and how each are progressing. Next Mladen shares his thoughts on monitoring and its impact on being “smarter” in development and how they utilized technology to make sure athletes were prepared properly. That ties right into some flaws in injury prediction modeling that he has seen, and why we might be chasing our tails with some of it. He finishes off with sharing what he’s doing now, what his research is for his PhD, and why he chose that.

My Thoughts Monday #11-Scott Brincks, University of Richmond-Are we doing too much, too little, or what's needed? Dec 18, 2017
    Show notes

“The bottom line is, we are here because of the athletes. We are here because we love what we do, and that drives our passion but can also could our thoughts because we want it so bad for them. Sometimes, simple is the best. Sometimes, just hard work can be successful.”
University of Richmond Director of Strength and Conditioning Scott Brincks asks the simple question to all of us today, “do we do enough, or do we do too much?” He asks this question, not just of the what’s, how’s, and when’s of our programming, but all factors involved. He shares with us how he comes to make decisions in all aspects of his program from training to monitoring, and how the idea of doing what is necessary to achieve the goals he and the athlete have come up with drive all these decisions. He finishes off asking us to think of some simple things with our programming: is this going to benefit the athlete, help them be successful, is it safe, and do you believe in it?

My Thoughts Monday #10-Jake Jensen- Mental Toughness? Dec 09, 2017
    Show notes

“In a lot of team sport situation mental toughness becomes a scape goat for underperforming athletes weather they lack tactical skill or physical conditioning it’s always convenient to blame mental toughness”
Mental toughness is, and always will be, a point that divides our industry. Today, Jake Jensen shares his thoughts on it. Jake refers to research in to how he defines it, and looks to improve it with his athlete. This is through evaluating the athlete like we would in training and improving what area’s they are weak in. Looking at it in this manner helps coaches look at it as a more “physical quality” in how you train, teach, and develop it including an example of how, step by step, it can be done.

Episode 110-Anna Kuzan, Grand Canyon University, Building relationships and culture from day 1 Dec 05, 2017
    Show notes

"There’s a lot of people out there you want to reach out the them and say, “how was it like early on?” because it wasn’t probably all the roses that they have now. They worked to get that respect. They worked there ASEES off to get that respect, and hearing how they worked their ass off, cause you’re going to be at a smaller school, or you’re gonna work for a coach that doesn’t really care for you. And you’re gonna want to know how to earn that person’s respect, and how to get it. What to do in cases that you might come to. You come up to a wall and are like, “Man, I can’t through this wall”. You reach out to someone that you know who has been successful, or who has been through it and you bounce ideas off them. Hopefully they’ll give information like, "Hey, this is what I would do, this is the approach I would take," and just listening to them and their advice."
Today we are joined by Grand Canyon University’s Anna Kuzan. Anna starts out sharing with us her experience with Ole Miss Softball. This two year turn around brought a team from not making the SEC tournament, to winning it two years later. She shares, step by step, the process that they, as a staff, went through to bring about this change. She then touches upon the differences she sees between where she was and where she is, both in the athlete’s and the situation. We finish giving her advice for young coaches moving forward and specific advice for young female coaches getting into the game.
