    Show notes

“Strength isn’t everything, there’s a lot of different aspects to physical performance. A lot of the stuff we do, we are trying to support athletic development, and sometimes that’s that we just need to get out of the way, and let the athletes do what they do best.”
What’s up everybody and welcome the 35th episode of Outside The Rack brought to you by Kinetic Performance the makers of Gymaware. In this show we are going to try to dive a little deeper into the minds of the top practitioners in the world of sport performance to learn a bit more about who they actually are and how they got to where they are at today. Today we are joined by my good friend Graeme Morris. Graeme, thanks for being with us today.
Before we start, who is Graeme Morris?

Three years ago in Thailand, getting rag dolled by a 70 Kg guy, strength isn’t everything.
    2) If you could ask one questions and you know you would get the answer what would that be and why?
“What should be my next plan going ahead?”

Exxentric is the world leader in fly wheel training technology providing multiple pieces to fit your budget and needs to better serve your athletes. Today I have the absolute pleasure of discussing remote coaching with national level athletes and how strong may be strong enough, with the Canadian Olympic Committee’s Scott Willgress. After a quick intro Scott shares with us how the progression of building this program with their national softball team. These steps have gone from using dropbox and excel to where they are now using an athlete management software and bar velocity monitoring. He then shares with us how he is continuing to work his different teams and continue monitoring and communicating with the athletes and coaches when they’re on the road. Next, he dives into the work he has done to look into how strong is strong enough, including what lifts they look at, why they look at them, and where this “magic number” is that he’s seeing. Looking at these numbers and then “bucketing” the players into “strong enough” and “not strong enough” groups has brought about great results for him and his athlete. Make sure to give him a follow on IG @sdubstrength.

My Thoughts Monday #131- The Value of a Presentation is The Questions It It Makes You Ask Apr 13, 2020
    Show notes

“If we all had it figured out we would all be doing the same thing.”
“Can you take something from someone, and make it make you think and reevaluate, and breakdown what you are doing?”
This My Thoughts Monday is brought to you by Vald Performance, the team behind the NordBord, ForceDecks, the GroinBar and HumanTrak. With all their products providing evidence-based solutions to performance professionals so they can get the right information, for the right decision, at the right time. This weeks My Thoughts Monday I share some of the driving reasons behind CVASPS and how it’s still useful as we look at presentations today. All to often we see people discussing presentations on social media and referring to these “great” presentation because they provide confirmation bias. I understand where that may fit, and why we would enjoy those talks, but what we hope the presentations at CVASPS do is make people ask questions about what they’re doing. That to me, is what makes a great presentation, and I share some examples of those that I’ve seen recently that did just that.

Outside The Rack #34- Matt Thome Apr 09, 2020
    Show notes

“Sometimes you need to slow down and go back and kind of reground yourself and say, ‘What is the most important thing we are doing? How can we accomplish that?’ Rather than, let me add this, and add that, and add this, and before you know it you have three different things that are kind of aimed for one goal.”
‘This puzzle is never ending, which is what makes this field great.”
What’s up everybody and welcome the 34th episode of Outside The Rack brought to you by Kinetic Performance the makers of Gymaware. When I was at Richmond, but I’ve seen over and over, and that is keep things simple and don’t forget about the essentials.
    2) If you could ask one questions and you know you would get the answer what would that be and why?
What’s the best way that we can create a collaborative performance team?
    3) What’s your escape?
For me it’s going on a hike, getting out side a bit.

We then discuss the steps he had to take to get to the league and what advice he would give to young International coaches wanting to come to the states to practice. My Thoughts Monday #130- Lessons From Grey Beard, Don’t Be A Jerk Apr 06, 2020
    Show notes

“In today’s day and age I don’t feel like you can be respected by kids if they don’t like you”
“If you’re going to be a jerk to people you better be exemplary, like out of this world at what you do, period, because people aren’t going to put up with it.”
“That’s the most overlooked thing in all of sports. Find you a crew that really wants to work for each other, and really likes each other, and really loves each other, and is willing to do whatever it takes even if that means stepping aside and doing less, or not arguing with someone over something because it’s really not what is most important at the present moment.”

In this little mini-series in My Thoughts Monday’s I’m going to put on my best Anthony Doskov hat and try to share some things with younger coaches. Lesson one is a simple one, don’t be a jerk. All to often there is this “tough guy” front that strength coaches seem to think they need to put up, but at the end of the day, is that helping you or holding you back?

We are joined by UMASS’s Andrew Cormier to discuss using a minimal dose. After a quick run down of how Andrew got up to Amherst, he dives right into what where the driving factors behind the training he set up for the softball team at UMASS. This includes teaching the athletes what “full effort” is, and how they plan out their training weeks. He then shares with us what improvements he saw by cutting the volume of the work and what the athlete’s subjective response was it. Next, he shares with us what he’s taken away from this experiment with cutting volume, and how he sees it impacting his programming in the future. We finish off discussing how this model will alter his in season training, how he has shifted his “focus” with the team, and what he thought he did really well and what he would improve upon.

“If we all were to start at our dream job, our maximum potential to fulfill that job, those roles and responsibilities, wouldn’t be as as high as it could. If we didn’t work our way up the ladder, and go through the trials and tribulations of a lower level position, being able to work through those mistakes and those failures, and those lessons. Where at those bigger levels, power 5. etc., certain mistakes aren’t as forgivable.”
