As we continue to progress into this return to sport during COVID-19 I’ve had the luxury of being able to discuss with a lot of practitioners about their plans, policy’s, and procedures in the process. Many of these coaches has expressed the same concerns, and that is a lack of leadership. In this weeks My Thoughts Monday I share where I feel we, as performance practitioners, can lead better, and really help drive our departments forward because we are so used to having to evolve and be agile and flexible with what we do.

The return to sport programming for athletes has been a huge point of conversation through this whole “break” that we have had. Along with building the plan, handling sport coaches along with it has been at the front of everyones mind. This is why it’s vital for coaches to have confidence in, not just the program, but how they communicate what and why they’re doing what they are doing as well, is vital. We also need to be ready and confident in our plans to take care of the athletes that have set backs. What’s our back up plan? What’s our plan for kids that have set backs? How are we, as a performance staff as a whole, going to handle these issues? In this weeks My Thoughts Monday, I share our plans for that, and why this set up the way we do and what some of our “Plan B” ideas are.

Chris McCormick joined us for an instagram live to discuss a vast array of things going on with his athletes. The conversation starts with a bit of a self review of the year, what improvements he has seen, where he feels he can improve, and what he is setting into place to make those improvements happen. Chris then shares with us how how role as a director has changed during this pandemic, and how he has tried to be creative to keep things as close to “normal” as possible. Chris then runs down the rabbit hole of our role, how he is trying to expand his, and how communication, or at times keeping quiet, are driving factors.

My Thoughts Monday #145- The What’s And Whys To Our Return To Sport Program Jul 13, 2020
    Show notes

“We know intent is king, right, so if you are springing fast and jumping high, as explosively or far or whatever as possible, and you just cut the volume and work your way up with that, you’re going to get a heck of a lot more out of that you are if you’re moving 100 pounds, which is 50% of what you should be lifting.”

As student athletes are starting to return to campus some coaches have already had the ability to start to work with their athletes, while some are starting in the near future. In this weeks My Thoughts Monday I discuss the plan that we have built for our athletes return to sport when they come back on campus, why we chose these things based on some of the conversations we have been lucky to have with coaches who are already “in the trenches.” This simple progression of basic progressive overload makes a lot of sense to me, but would love to get your input or feedback on the plan.

Podcast 244- An Instagram Live Q and A with Chris Ham Jul 07, 2020
    Show notes

“Everyday these guys come to the weight room is an assessment to me.”
“Once you get these guys to understand self awareness, it’s big. Understanding the decisions they make outside of the weight room, outside the baseball field are going to have a huge impact on what they try to do, especially when it comes to performance. I think you’ll get a lot more guys to start to question, “maybe I’m not doing this right, maybe I need to start just a little bit earlier”.”

Recently, I had the opportunity to talk developing baseball players with Chris Ham on an Instagram live. Chris has a unique background being an athletic trainer, and he shares with us his evaluation protocols that he utilizes so that he can best “bucket” his athletes. He then discusses the relationship between S and C and ATC’s and how to enhance that relationship to make sure are all all working to better the athlete together. We finish off discussing the implementation of VBT with baseball players.
