This COVID-19 Pandemic has provided one thing for all of us, and that is time to reflect a bit. In this weeks My Thoughts Monday I share the first of those reflections, and that is how powerful it is to have a purpose. This purpose has both a positive and a negative side, both building up and breaking down, but a byproduct of it is that it has led to more than one way of improving me as a person and as a coach.

    2) If you could ask one question and you know you would get the answer what would that be and why?
Is it really turtles all the way down? What is it that unifies our existence?

Episode 256- Dr. Josh Nelson- Influencing Behavior For Positive Results Sep 29, 2020

“We don’t want to give information, we want to impact positive behaviors”
“Boil it down to the why and it will drive everything that you’re doing.”

In this weeks episode of the podcast Dr. Josh Nelson joins us to discuss ways that we can help educate athletes and coaches and impact positive behavior changes for the people they get to work with. He then discusses how he periodizes this “education” and why he chooses what he chooses at different times of the year. This includes how they look at the different forms of stress (school, sports, social, current events) and how those impact what messages they are trying to get across to everyone involved to help them be better. This discussing is full of great ways for coaches to help figure out direction for them to help communicate to everyone they get to work with on how to better take care of themselves to be able to perform at a high level. This includes some great analogies and the role of social media to “meet the kids where they’re at” and get messages across to people in the different mediums available.

The major benefit of all the great things that CVASPS has provided for me is the ability to have conversations with great practitioners all over the world. In this weeks My Thoughts Monday I share with you how a quote from a coworker has really tied together some common issues that coaches around the country are having right now with leadership, and some concerns that arise because of how these issues are way more common place then we would like to admit.

This week I get to sit down and discuss the developing a true speed program with Villanova’s Football Strength Coach, Mike Tucker. Mike and I start out discussing our journeys to where we are, and how starting at a lower level division one institution really formed us as a coach and made us really find out way though our initial growth as professionals. Coach Tucker then dives into how he builds his program, and what he is actually looking at when he reverse engineers the sport of American Football. This includes the structure of his programming and he works to find better ways to marry the stimuli that he’s utilizing with his athletes. We then discuss how this pandemic has lead to some new challenges, but also has some benefits allowing us to “slow cook it” a bit more, and how he feels this is going to have an impact, not just on the players, but the coaches as well.
