Outside The Rack #65- Jason Dierking Nov 19, 2020
    Show notes

“It’s easy to talk about your beliefs, it’s easy to talk about faith, it’s easy to talk about your values but when you actually have to live it out then it becomes is it real or not?”
What’s up everybody and welcome the 65th episode of Outside The Rack brought to you by Kinetic Performance the makers of Gymaware. In this show we are going to try to dive a little deeper into the minds of the top practitioners in the world of sport performance to learn a bit more about who they actually are and how they got to where they are at today. Today we are joined by the University of Louisville’s Director of Sports Performance, Jason Dierking. Jason, thanks for being with us today.
Before we start, who is Jason Dierking?
Many things, to start with I’m a Christian and my faith is very important to me, a husband, a son, a brother. A while ago I would have said I’m a coach, but now I see that as what I do, not who I am.
    1) Describe a learning situation that brought about an epiphany in your career
Doing the Iron Man Triathlon and using it as a fund raiser for spinal cord injured people. Committing to something bigger than himself taught him how much a purpose can drive you.
    2) If you could ask one question and you know you would get the answer what would that be and why?
I don’t need to have all the answers, I trust my faith.
    3) What’s your escape?
Physically it’s yard work, but reading is the one thing that I’ve started doing more of on topics outside our profession.

Bad things happen. This can be stated about all things in life, but bad things definitely happen in sports. In this weeks My Thoughts Monday, Chris Hays shares with us some of his reflecting after one of his athlete’s was injured. With the time off that we have all spoken about multiple times, there are consequences associated with having these layoffs. Unfortunately for some, there are also events that remind us of these layoffs. In this weeks show, Chris discusses not just the injury, and its impact on him, but how he and the staff have made changes on moving forward with their athletes to, hopefully, forward as positively as possible.

This week I have the absolute pleasure to sit down and discuss speed development with Dr. Ken Clark. After a quick rundown of how he got up to West Chester we get right into discussing speed. We discuss how it’s become more “en vogue” of late, and bridge being connected between research and training. Dr. Clark then shares with us how they bring the research to the track and how the answer to how to connect the practical with the research tends to be, keep it simple. This leads us right into the horizontal vs vertical forces when it comes to speed, and how at the end of the day the answer is some place in the middle. He then discusses top end speed, its role in training, and where it can be utilized in sports that don’t sprint or have time to hit Max V can still benefit from hitting high speeds in training. We finish off discussing the future of research, and how the next step is involving teams and higher-level athletes. Dr. Clark puts out some great info on twitter and Instagram at @kenclarkspeed and his website kenclarkspeed.com so make sure to check those out!

The first one was summer working with a new team and communicating with the sport coaches to understand what’s going on. The second is with our internship program and utilizing different programs across campus within it.
    2) If you could ask one question and you know you would get the answer what would that be and why?
The first, progressional, is “what else are we missing that could really help us give our athletes the tools necessary to be the best they can be?”
The second, personally, is “what else is really out there?”
    3) What’s your escape?
My big one, yearly, is to go snow boarding.

My Thoughts Monday #161- Jay DeMayo- Does Our Mission Match THE Mission? Nov 02, 2020
    Show notes

“If winning is what is the goal then your metrics need to show you’re improving that likelihood.”
“If the experience of the young people is the primary objective, we need to provide them with a positive experience, and if the things that we maybe have been taking away, because we feel like they don’t impact performance, actually drive the positive experience, then maybe those things should go back in.”
“Are we following the mission of what the department has, or are we following the mission of what we think it should be?”

Conversations are consistently had where strength coaches talk with each other about how “sport coaches don’t get it” or “admin has no idea” when it comes to what we do and why we do things. In this weeks My Thoughts Monday I try to put the shoe on the other foot and talk about how possibly we may be going at things incorrectly because we are not following the mission statement of the department.
