This week I get the opportunity to discuss the misconceptions of the role of military training with Jason Crutchfield. After quick run down of how he got into coaching we discuss what his role was in the military and how that has impacted his outlook as a coach, including what training for OCS (Officer Candidate School) is like and some of the mistakes people make when they look at that type of training. He then dives into the ideas of maximum capacity threshold that they experienced in the Marine vs the minimum effective dose he tries to implement with his athletes. He then dives down the “mental toughness” rabbit hole, and where he see’s people being confused with what they do in the military and how it’s in team sports. Living up to the assumptions of what we “are” or how we are supposed to act may be what is holding us back from moving forward. Molly shares with us some of the issues that she sees with the lack of education and professional standards, which leads her to giving us an example and a possible solution to help us to continue to push our great field forward.

This week I get the chance to sit down and discuss the voyage of a strength coach with Robb Hornett. After a run-down of how he got to St. Louis we get into what the lessons were in his stop. Each one bringing him a unique point of view and new perspective to help drive him forward. We then talk about the timing of training throughout the week in season, and how setting the schedule more for recovery than for performance has changed his programming. This leads him into a discussion on controlling what you can, and making sure that you are doing the best with what you’re able to control, to be even better for your athletes. We finish off talking about the return to sport after the lay off and some lessons that were taken from this time away, and where our two teams are at the present moment in our preparation and how ready we both are for games to start.

A year ago, this time, who would have thought we would be where we are now? Not me, that’s for sure. But looking back on 2020, it has been a year of a ton of growth for me, and because of this, it has made me ask some different questions and really refocus on where I am personally. I’ve tried to continue to challenge myself, and push boundaries. This has led to some things that I am going to try to do differently to be better, and one of those is to write down and share my new year’s resolutions. It’s only two things, but I think that these will really help me continue to grow and become a better all-around person, plus hold me accountable to it putting it online. Those are: read (and invest in) 10 pages a day minimum, and pay myself first.

Recently I had the opportunity to sit down and discuss training transfer and monitoring the training process with Dr. Tim Suchomel. After a run down of how he got up to Carroll University, Tim starts discusses where the confusion on what actually “transfer” means and how sees how it can actually show up. He then runs down the rabbit hole of how they evaluate their athlete’s and have built their “model” for what their best athletes have looked like. This drives training decisions, and has been helpful in identifying outliers and how they’re either exceptional at one specific aspect of their sport or where they need to find ways to improve. We finish off discussing the process of building these athlete profiles, what some roadblocks where in this process, and how it is continuing to evolve as their ability to collect and apply data expands.
