    Show notes

“If your principle is always to allow them to get better at their sport than sometimes we have to take a step back from what we find to be important.”

In this weeks episode of The Podcast I have the pleasure to sit down with Frank Barone to discuss the organization of the training process. After a run down of how he got up to Pittsburgh we get right into the process of building a team from scratch and some of the unique challenges associated with that. He then goes into the programming process and how he reverse engineers the game, while looking at similarities across different sports to help provide positive transfer to the sport. Frank shares with us some great insight on how he breaks down these movements, and how he looks at individual movements through a slightly different lens to help improve how we can structure our training weeks to better impact performance. We finish off discussing where we see our role change from the offseason to the in season, and where we both feel that performance coaches can do better to help the athletes and sport coaches. Frank puts out a lot of great content so make sure to give him a follow on instagram @coach_frankb.

In this weeks My Thoughts Monday I reflect on the last book I read during this round of the 75 Hard Program, and that is Andy Frisella’s book on the program, 75 Hard. In his book he has a great Q and A section where he discusses different different ways people sabotage their ability to reach their goals. This has sparked a couple new thought processes for me when it comes to developing and progressing the programs for each individual athlete. This, HOPEFULLY, will increase “buy-in” for each athlete, thus improving the results of said training program.

“How are you going to be the best coach that you can be for your athletes? I don’t think that’s going to be on low sleep or being over worked because, like we said, our seasons are long.”

This weeks episode of The Podcast I had the opportunity to sit down and catch up with Daniel Guzman and chat about flexibility in our programming and communication. After a quick run down of how he got back to LA we dive right into the unique challenges around physical preparation going into this off season. With the pandemic there are unique challenges to the athletes in their preparation with the restrictions that people are living under, which in some places is eliminating “pick up” and that could be a primary stimuli in their off season. We then discuss how the pandemic has taught us how to communicate better and forced us to reflect on our practice, and find better ways to get input from our athletes. We then discuss some aspects of the “off season” that we feel may be misinterpreted including goal setting, keeping the primary focus the focus, and autonomy/learning for the athlete. We finish off discussing the impact this has had on coaching health, and how it has made both of us find our “totems” to ground ourselves to find our “shut off” points to pause from work.

I’ve spoken many times about how 75 Hard has helped me improve, but it has been really important to “keeping me in line” during the season. One of the daily tasks of this program are reading 10 pages a day, which has really helped me to keep me growing and expanding as a coach. In this week’s My Thoughts Monday I share some take aways from a book that Ali Kershner referenced on The Podcast. The book, Improve Wisdom, has a lot of great lessons that transfer over to coaching quite well. I highly recommend it.

I have the pleasure of sitting down with Tim Caron to discuss training in this week’s episode of The Podcast. After a run-down of how he got out to Cali and opened Allegiate we get into his education background and how two very different “mentors” have had an immense impacts on him professional development. Tim then runs down the rabbit hole of nutrition, how he’s brought information from different experts together to lead to better discussions and prescriptions for the athletes he has gotten to work with in a more holistic way. We then discuss the role of in person learning from the greats, and how limitations to reading a book and thinking that you have the answers is really holding us back from truly understanding what their methods are. We finish off talking about the work that they’re doing to help educate coaches. “At the end of the you keep growing from your mentors, and you keep growing from your mentees because they’re the most important person to your career development, and they’re the most impactful person to how you can diversify your education?"

All too often we look at our mentors as the person who is going to “get us the next job”. This has been a topic of discussion lately in the lovely world of strength coach twitter, and one that I think we are missing the forest for the trees with. We need to take a step back and look at what is the most important part of this process, and that is hiring the right person. But the question is, what makes that person right, or the position right? In this week’s My Thoughts Monday I share where I see that, and why I feel like that has been the driving factor behind our success and evolution as coaches and a staff.

This week’s episode of The Podcast is a great conversation on coaching education with Vinnie Calautti. After a brief run down of how he got down to The A, Vinnie dives into the role of his time up in Massachusetts and how huge of an impact it had on the trajectory of his professional voyage. This includes how interns get “paid” in the present “system” and the value that people seem to over look with these positions. Vinnie shares with us some specific stories from his way up the ranks that had great impact on him, including why he always has a stop watch, where to put your hands when you’re coaching, and the role of posture in your engagement with the athletes.
