Episode 90 True Crime: The Murder of Mary Phagan and the Lynching of Leo Frank Apr 15, 2021

Show notes

We’re still working through the communities that were attacked in Taylor Nolan’s tweets. This week, Megan focuses on the Jewish community and talks about Anti-Semitism around the world and in the United States.

We jump in the way back machine, to 1913 and Megan tells the story of 13-year-old Mary Phagan who was murdered at the Atlanta, Georgia factory she worked in. Media attention turned to the supervisor of the factory, Leo Frank, a Jewish man. Leo is then tried and convicted of Mary’s murder, on very suspicious testimony. After his sentence is commuted, from death to life in prison, a white mob lynched Leo Frank in Marietta, Georgia.

Today, Leo Frank is widely believed to be innocent of Mary’s murder. The true murderer is believed to be the lead witness for the prosecution.

CONTENT WARNING: child victim, brief mention of child molestation (no details), Lynching, anti-semitism

Episode 89 True Crime: The Murder of Gerlie Alpajora and the Disappearance of Keith Davis Apr 08, 2021

Show notes

We decided to cover stories that highlight the marginalized populations that were attacked in the recently resurfaced tweets by Taylor Nolan. This week, we focus on the Asian-American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities.

Danielle tells the story of the murder of Gerlie Alpajora in the Camarines Sur province, located in the Philippines. Gerlie was assassinated because of her advocacy work targeting illegal, unregulated, and unreported fishing in the area.

Gerlie’s murder also brought light to the disappearance of Keith Davis, both highlighted in the Netflix documentary Seaspiracy. The documentary is about the environmental impact of industrialized fishing directed by and starring Ali Tabrizi. The film features human impacts on marine life and the human rights violations that surround the fishing industry.

Episode 87 True Crime: The Crime of Cultural Appropriation: The story of Race Faker, Rachel Dolezal Mar 25, 2021

Show notes

This week we are connecting our true crime story to The Bachelor finale and After the Final Rose (ATFR). This season we saw a lot of problematic white women and racism all up and through this franchise. It all ended with Rachael Kirkconnell receiving the final rose and forcing everyone to focus on her racially ignorant ass, rather than the love story we wanted for Matt James.

Danielle covers the story of another problematic white woman, Rachel Dolezal. Rachel, also known as NKechi Amare Diallo, was exposed in 2015 after news broke that she was pretending to be black, when she was actually born to two white parents in Montana. The story made national headlines and had the world talking, so we had to tell you about it.

We see Michelle meet Matt’s family (and listen to Kelcee swoon over John James), the final dates and Matt give the final rose to the last problematic white woman left in the season.

Our BIPOC highlight of the week goes to our new hostess with the mostest, Emmanuel Acho! Emmanuel did an amazing job having the difficult conversations about race during ATFR and answering all the questions about Racist Rachael that we needed answers to.

If you want to hear more of Kelcee you can catch her on Episode 69, Episode 43 and Episode 19!

Episode 83 The Bachelor: Macaroni in a Pot (Season 25, Week 10 with Special Guests Alex and Loren from the Basic Bitch Podcast) Mar 10, 2021

Show notes

It’s fantasy suites week, and we are joined by our beautifully basic friends, Alex and Loren, from the Basic Bitch Podcast!

To start things out, we see Matt have a difficult conversation with his father, who has not been around for most of Matt’s life.

We see Michelle’s Pennsylvania Dutch-inspired spa date, Bri’s hiking date, and Rachael’s pottery date. The three fantasy suites definitely are not all on the same level, and Rachael gets a whole house for her suite AND fireworks. The Producers are making their biases known, and known loudly. We hate it.

Our BIPOC highlight goes to Bri Springs (of course), we also say goodbye to Bri as well. Bri is the 25-year-old communications manager from San Francisco, California. Bri has been serving us LEWKS all season and left her job to continue on the show. Bri, if Matt didn’t appreciate you, we sure did!
