    #49: A Better Way To Live w. Aaron Hinde Apr 01, 2020
    Show notes

In 2011, Dr. Aaron Hinde left his lucrative $350k a year sports chiropractic practice to push the chips "all in" with business partner and fellow Santa Cruz native Orion Melehan to enter an industry with a failure rate of 99%...the beverage industry. With zero beverage experience and high hopes of creating the next Billion dollar beverage brand, he moved his family off the grid…literally. With two kids he downsized his life to live in a 400 sq. foot home with no power and no income. Obsessed with producing high quality, efficacious, and niche functional lifestyle drinks to replace the high sugar, high caffeine and artificially laden energy and "sports" drinks, LIFEAID garnered tremendous traction with CrossFitters and Spartan Racers concerned about clean recovery with their FITAID sku. Today, the entire LIFEAID line of FITAID, FOCUSAID, PARTYAID, LIFEAID, IMMUNITYAID, CBD, and GOLFERAID continue to dominate niche markets as well as garnering significant traction in conventional channels such as Whole Foods, Sprouts, Safeway, Kroger, Walmart, CVS, HEB, Vitamin Shoppe and GNC among many others. LifeAID products are currently sold in tens of thousands of accounts, have 550,000+ active engaged followers on social media, and was ranked in the Inc 500 fastest growing companies in the US three years in a row. Aaron obtained his BA in Economics from Saint Vincent College with a minor in international business and his Doctor of Chiropractic from Palmer College of Chiropractic. He practiced in Santa Cruz, CA for 10 years. In 2008, Aaron was elected to serve as a trustee on the Santa Cruz County Board of Education. He was re-elected in 2010. He has since sold his practice and given up politics to focus on making LIFEAID a household name. Aaron is married to his beautiful wife Ramah of 17 years and has two children, 15 y.o. Trinity and 13 y.o. Bronson who are the company's biggest advocates.

#46: Performing at our Highest Biological Potential w. Brian MacKenzie Mar 09, 2020
    Show notes

Bio: Brian MacKenzie is an expert in the development and application of custom protocols to optimize human health and performance. His work harnesses and integrates respiratory, movement, strength and endurance-based training approaches to elicit unprecedented positive results. His protocols have been used to accelerate and raise both mental and physical performance in world-class Olympic and professional athletes, top executives, and operators, as well as to improve the health for people suffering from various chronic illnesses. Everyday people have also used Brian's tools to reduce pathologic stress and to vastly heighten their mental and physical well being and performance. A highly unique feature of Brian's approach is that he voluntarily and repeatedly subjects his protocols to rigorous 3rd party scientific testing, re-testing, and improvement, at top institutions including Stanford University School of Medicine, Florida A&M University and The Center for Sports Performance. Few, if any, experts directly seek to apply unbiased laboratory and field testing to their craft as Mackenzie does. Brian is himself an accomplished athlete having completed the Ironman (Canada, 2004), both The Western States 100 (2006) mile and The Angeles Crest 100 (2007) mile runs using adapted training protocols he developed to avoid injury and fatigue. Also a prolific writer, Brian co-authored the book Power Speed Endurance, The New York Times Best Seller UnBreakable Runner, and UnPlugged, which assesses the integration of emergent technology and human performance. His programs have been featured in Outside Magazine, Men's Health, Runners World, Triathlete Magazine, Men's Journal, ESPN Rise, as well as periodicals such as The Economist. Brian and his protocols have been featured in 4 of Timothy Ferriss' New York Times bestselling books including: "The 4-Hour Body" and "Tools of Titans". Brian MacKenzie's programs have been taught at more than 400 seminars worldwide and are used by thousands of athletes ranging from beginners to elite medalists and record holders via his "Power, Speed, Endurance" platform and by private consultation. Currently, Brian is the Co-Founder and President of the Health and Human Performance Foundation (HHPF), and the Creative Director at Power Speed Endurance, a company focused on the optimization of human performance, corporate performance and the delivery of science-based protocols to optimize physical, emotional and cognitive performance for health.

#45: Professor of Human Performance w. Dr. Andy Galpin Mar 04, 2020
    Show notes

Dr. Andy is a tenured Professor in the Center for Sport Performance at CSU Fullerton. He was born and raised in beautiful Rochester, WA and is a die-hard Seahawks, Huskies, & Mariner fan. RIP Sonics. As a youth, Andy played every sport at his disposal, excelling at Football, Basketball, Baseball, and Track & Field. While not playing, he worked at grocery stores, gas stations, hay fields, blueberry farms, and in the road construction business. It was during this time he discovered Strength & Conditioning. Andy took his limited talents to Linfield College to join their Football team and pursue a degree in Exercise Science. While he experienced great success in both (2004 National Championship and 2x Captain and immediate inductee into the "All Ugly" Team), the true reward of this time was the meeting of lifelong friend (Doug Larson). The two fed each other's pursuit of knowledge of human performance and led them to attend the University of Memphis for the Masters degrees in Human Movement Sciences. A bit of luck and excellent faculty mentoring led Doug and Andy to meet Mike Bledsoe and the man formally known as "Barbell Buddha" Chris Moore - all of which later led to the creation of the #1 Health & Fitness Podcast in the world Barbell Shrugged. It also marked the start of Andy's competitive Weightlifting (culminating in his 7th Place finish in the 2007 National Championships), Mixed Martial Arts, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu careers. Needing to know more about muscle, Andy spent 4 years studying the structure and function of human skeletal muscle at the single cell level, a feat which earned him a PhD in Human Bioenergetics in 2011. This also resulted in the friendship with frequent collaborator Dr. Jimmy Bagley and the ability to open up his own "Biochemistry and Molecular Exercise Physiology Laboratory" at CSU Fullerton. He now focuses his attention on teaching classes (Sports Nutrition, Exercise Physiology, Designing Exercise Programs, Applied Strength and Conditioning, Athlete Assessment and Measurement, etc.) and running the BMEP lab (which studies the acute responses and chronic adaptations of human skeletal muscle in response to high force/velocity/power and fatiguing exercise from the whole body, down to the individual muscle fiber and even into the individual DNA. The team does this by taking muscle biopsies from non-athletes and elite athletes from different backgrounds (e.g. normal college student, MMA fighter, Boxer, Weightlifter, etc.) and use highly sophisticated laboratory techniques and equipment to address questions about single fiber "type", size, function, protein quantity, diameter, mitochondria, and myonuclear function. You can get all of our published research here. At heart, Andy is simply a story-teller and teacher.
