    Show notes

We are joined by AJ Perez (@byajperez) from Front Office Sports to give us the latest on the Washington Commanders saga. (4:50) The Commanders and Dan Snyder allegedly were cooking the books as they reportedly did not turn over the necessary 40% of net ticket sales per the revenue sharing agreement with the NFL. The House Oversight Committee continues to investigate.

AJ wrote an article diving into these allegations in which the Commanders withheld ticket revenue from the NFL. Read AJ's full article here.

Our very own Steph, took a deep dive into the federal filings against the Commanders for other accusations relating to financial improprieties. Sports Gambling Legislative Roundup Apr 03, 2022
    Show notes

Dan Wallach and Mike join for a new segment covering the latest in the sports gambling world. Make sure to check out the video on our YouTube channel.

Georgia has a deadline for tomorrow (4/4/2022) for their legislative session to legalize gambling. There is a lot left on the table to discuss and figure out in time for this deadline. It does not appear possible to achieve in a state where casino and horse racing gambling is not yet legal.

Kansas and Missouri are still a month away from their deadlines and are much closer to legalizing sports gambling. The rivalry between the two states is driving each other closer to legalization in an effort not to fall behind their neighboring state. Cannot help but believe a missed opportunity for Kansas with their men's basketball team playing in the championship game on 4/4/2022.

New York has a similar deadline by tomorrow for their state budget bill to be passed. Within that bill we could see an acceleration of the 2023 date for three downstate casino licenses.

Also, within the NYS budget bill is going to be the determination of the amount of public funding going towards the new Buffalo Bills stadium. Looking at $850 million dollars, this will be the largest publicly funded stadium of all time. With the July 1, 2023, expiration of the Bills current stadium lease, this is the second to last chance to pass a budget that the Bills ownership will agree to before the possibility of relocation.

New York also just had the ruling come down on the issue of whether daily fantasy sports is constitutional under NY State's constitution. NY's highest court, the Court of Appeals, ruled that DFS are games of skill and thus constitutional. They also gave the legislature deference to determine the constitutionality and define DFS. This a key case that can be used against future constitutional challenges with other skill-based games.

Yankees Letter; Watson to Browns; Kentucky Sports Betting Mar 23, 2022
    Show notes

What is inside the Yankees letter?? (3:40) This week Dan Lust, Mike, Emily, and Hunter Bedard break down the Second Circuit ruling to unseal the letter between the Yankees and MLB containing sign stealing scandal information.

Hunter Bedard (@hunter_bedard98) is the President of the University of Florida Levin College of Law Entertainment and Sports Law Society and also talks about the UVA softball tournament and a possible dynasty forming in UF Law's team.

The Cleveland Browns make history (23:50) with the largest guaranteed contract in NFL history. Is this negligent with the 22 civil lawsuits still pending? The first year of Watson's contract is $1 million. Does this mean Watson is expecting a suspension to come from the NFL?

Sports Gambling Corner with Dan Wallach (44:50) as he speaks with Kentucky State Representative Adam Koenig regarding Kentucky's sports gambling possible legalization.

The Deshaun Watson Episode Mar 14, 2022
    Show notes

We are joined by our resident DA Matt Tympanick (@TympanickLaw) to break down the recent grand jury hearing and civil depositions. Did the DA hide behind the grand jury ruling? Tympanick explains that although state criminal charges can no longer be brought, Watson could still face federal charges. There is also a possibility that the other 12 women in the civil cases, who didn't originally bring criminal complaints, could now come forward.

Dan Lust and Matt answer a number of questions surrounding Watson's future:

Will Watson be traded now that there are no criminal charges? Does Watson have to settle his civil cases before a trade happens? What does this mean for Watson's potential punishment from the NFL?

Matt also gives some insight and advice to open up his own practice.

Calvin Ridley Admits Betting; Deshaun Watson Grand Jury; & MLB Lockout Continues Mar 09, 2022
    Show notes

Calvin Ridley has been suspended one year (2:21) for gambling on football games. Ridley allegedly bet a total of $1,500 while he was on leave from the team for mental health problems last season. Ridley responded on Twitter by admitting to the gambling. Is a full year suspension too harsh? Will this halt progression on states legalizing sports gambling?

Deshaun Watson (23:09) is having his case heard in front of a grand jury. Watson didn't play all of last season without any formal discipline. We will keep an eye out for the results of the grand jury hearing.

MLB continues to cancel games (39:00) as the lockout continues and negotiations remain uneventful.

PGA -v- Saudi Golf League, Trevor Bauer Subpoena, WNBA “Liberty” Termination, & More Russia Sports Fallout Mar 04, 2022
    Show notes

Dan Lust and Tarun are joined by John Nucci (@JNucci23) who is a frequent contributor to our website with some great articles. You can check out his articles here.

They discuss updates in the sports world (2:35) regarding bans for Russia and Belarus due to the military invasion of Ukraine. In the NHL world, CCM has made the decision to not use Alexander Ovechkin in any of their promotions. The Formula 1 world has begun banning Nikita Mazepin from racing. Are these bans/restrictions on Russian athletes who are not competing on behalf of Russia fair or justified?

The PGA is having a lot of problems with Saudi Arabia creating tournaments to encourage golfers to go over and compete. (8:52) The PGA has been threathening to remove players from the tour and encouraging players to not enter tournaments for the Saudi Golf League ("SGL"). Phil Mickelson has seen a number of his sponsors pull out after the comments he made around the SGL. Are there any antitrust implications here if the PGA prevents players from competing in the SGL?

We heard in February that Tevor Bauer (23:12) won't face criminal charges. Now, Bauer has filed a subpoena to get his accuser's cell phone records because he believes she coordinated this lawsuit for monetary gain. The subpoena will be ruled upon April 4, 2022. Bauer's accuser could still file a civil action against him and Manfred could still impose punishment.

The WNBA (34:07) fined the New York Liberty $500,000 for chartering planes during the 2021 regular season. Many of the players around the league are voicing their opposition because the charter flights are a good thing for the league and only improve the brand and product. We will see whether this fine holds up.

The MLB Lockout Mega Episode with Special Guest Rob Dibble Mar 03, 2022
    Show notes

Dan Lust, Mike and Tarun break down (2:49) the latest back and forth proposals for the CBA negotiations that appear to have come to an impasse. The MLB has announced that the first two series of the season will be cancelled. How does this compare to the 1994 strike? What are the next steps for negotiations?

We are joined by Rob Dibble (37:10) who was a pitcher for the Cincinnati Reds and is a 2-time all-star, 1990 World Series Champion, and 1990 NLCS MVP. Dibble gives great insight regarding his first-hand experience with the 1994 baseball strike. Dibble speaks about the collusion and bad faith negotiations he witnessed during the years leading up to the 1994 strike. He also discusses the long term impact on the game of baseball.
