Mary Elizabeth Winstead Interview: From Sky High Villain to Netflix Assassin Sep 11, 2021
    Show notes

Collider Ladies Night recently celebrated its very first returning guest, Karen Gillan for Gunpowder Milkshake. Now the show welcomes back its second returnee, Mary Elizabeth Winstead! Winstead swung by the Collider studio for an episode of Ladies Night back in 2019 for the release of Gemini Man and now she’s on the show again in honor of her new Netflix movie, Kate.

Winstead headlines the film as the title character, a skilled assassin who winds up being targeted herself. When Kate realizes she’s been poisoned, she sets out to track down who did it. Kate is essentially non-stop action with Winstead at the heart of almost every single scene. As though that isn't challenging enough, Winstead and the team behind Kate hit a little bump in that road that called for Winstead to step it up with her stuntwork -- more than ever before.

On this episode of Collider Ladies Night, Winstead details the challenges faced while making Kate and explains why she wound up doing more of her own stuntwork than you might expect. On top of that, Winstead looks back on fan favorite films like Sky High, Final Destination 3, Birds of Prey and more!

Fear Street's Emily Rudd on How She Went From Music Video Star to Netflix Powerhouse Sep 09, 2021
    Show notes

This was a very big summer for Emily Rudd. Not only was it announced that she joined the cast of the Amazon series, Hunters, for Season 2 and was set to star in HBO Max’s Moonshot alongside Cole Sprouse and Lana Condor, but her star also soared courtesy of the popularity of Netflix’s Fear Street trilogy.

Rudd first appears in the second film of the series, Fear Street 1978. Cindy Berman is a Shadyside resident determined to leave the troubled town behind despite the fact that her sister Ziggy (Sadie Sink) is convinced there’s nothing they can do -- all Shadysiders are doomed. The reality of their situation comes into focus for Cindy during the summer of 1978 at Camp Nightwing when the Shadyside campers and counselors are targeted by an ax-wielding killer.

Given my confidence that Fear Street is bound to become a genre classic and my sky high hopes we’ll be watching Rudd’s work for years to come, having her on an episode of Collider Ladies Night was an absolute must. Check out this chat to hear all about how Rudd got her start with music videos, what the audition process was like for Fear Street, how they pulled off that gnarly Fear Street 1978 ending and so much more!

Maggie Q Interview: From Nikita and Mission: Impossible III to The Protégé Aug 20, 2021
    Show notes

Maggie Q is kicking ass on screen yet again in Martin Campbell’s The Protégé. Q leads the film as Anna, a contract killer trained by Samuel L. Jackson’s Moody, who’s also like a father to her. When Moody is murdered, Anna sets out on a mission to track down the individual who had him killed.

Q is an undeniable top tier action star in The Protégé. While I’d like to bet that skillset was always there in some form, Q has spent a good deal of time honing that craft over the years to get to the level that she’s at here. With The Protégé now in theaters, Q joined us for an episode of Collider Ladies Night to revisit her journey from kicking off her action film run in Asia, to starring opposite Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible III and, of course, to headlining The CW’s Nikita.

Hear about all of that, the scariest stunt Q had to do in The Protégé, her interest in making another Protégé movie and loads more in this edition of Collider Ladies Night

Fear Street's Olivia Scott Welch Discusses Lessons Learned Making the Hit Netflix Trilogy Aug 13, 2021
    Show notes

Olivia Scott Welch is having quite the year. Not only did she headline the Amazon series Panic, she’s also part of the cast of one of the biggest releases of 2021, Netflix’s Fear Street trilogy. Welch first appears in Fear Street 1994 as Sam, a high school student who finds herself right smack in the middle of the Shadyside curse. Then, in Fear Street 1666, Welch plays Hannah Miller, the local pastor’s daughter who’s accused of witchcraft alongside Sarah Fier (Kiana Madeira).

It’s a phenomenal trilogy that celebrates genre through the years while also delivering a powerful narrative about being labeled an outcast and introducing the world to a downright stellar ensemble of young stars that are bound to continue to deliver big in film and television - Welch included.

With the expectation that Fear Street enthusiasm will remain sky high - yes, I’m one of the ones happy to call the films instant classics - having the two stars on Collider Ladies Night was an absolute must. We shared the conversation with Madeira a couple of weeks back and now it’s time to put Welch in the Ladies Night spotlight.

Hear all about Welch's experience working with Madeira and director Leigh Janiak on Fear Street, her earliest sources of inspiration, how it felt when her Nickelodeon pilot, The Dunes Club, didn’t get picked up and so much more on this edition of Collider Ladies Night!

The Suicide Squad Standout Daniela Melchior Details Her Journey from Portugal to Hollywood Aug 06, 2021
    Show notes

James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad features a stacked cast of very talented, accomplished actors including Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, John Cena and so many more. But do you know who winds up being a major Suicide Squad standout? Hollywood newcomer Daniela Melchior.

Melchior plays Ratcatcher II in the film. She’s got the ability to communicate with and control rats. When she attempts a bank heist with those rats, she's caught and thrown into Belle Reve Federal Penitentiary. However, now she’s getting the opportunity to reduce her sentence. All she’s got to do is take Amanda Waller’s (Viola Davis) offer and join her Suicide Squad for an extremely dangerous mission.

Given that I’m betting Melchior is going to wind up being a Suicide Squad favorite and the fact that I have very high hopes that the film will send her star soaring in the industry, having her as a guest on Collider Ladies Night was an absolute must. Check out this chat to hear all about how she scored her first Hollywood opportunities, how she celebrated booking Ratcatcher II, the unforgettable advice she received from Gunn, a whole bunch of The Suicide Squad spoiler details and loads more!

Fear Street Interview: Kiana Madeira Details Her Journey from Grease Superfan to Netflix Star Jul 25, 2021
    Show notes

Kiana Madeira’s been mighty busy in this industry for a good while now, but her show stopping performance in the Fear Street trilogy feels like it’s hitting a different level of notoriety — the level she deserves.

With the full Fear Street trilogy available to stream on Netflix, Madeira took the time to join us for an episode of Collider Ladies Night. Yes, we go deep on those films, including getting Madeira’s thoughts on the trilogy’s big finish and that end credits tease, but she also looked back on her journey to those Fear Street films. We discussed how she made the move from the Canadian film industry to scoring her first Hollywood role, her run on Netflix’s Trinkets, and what it was like working with one of the best casting directors in the business, Carmen Cuba.

Catch what she had to say about all of that, why she knew Olivia Scott Welch was the perfect Sam during their very first chemistry read, who she thinks took the book at the end of the Fear Street trilogy and loads more in this edition of Collider Ladies Night!

Alexandra Daddario Interview: Retracing Her Steps from Percy Jackson to The White Lotus Jul 17, 2021
    Show notes

Alexandra Daddario is mighty busy right now. Not only does she have the long-awaited movie, Die in a Gunfight, available to watch in theaters and on demand, but also the new HBO series, The White Lotus, which has begun its run with Episode 2 due to air on Sunday at 9pm.

Daddario stars alongside Diego Boneta in Die in a Gunfight as Mary and Ben, respectively. A spin on Romeo and Juliet, they’re star-crossed lovers forbidden to be together by their powerful, feuding families. And then in The White Lotus, Daddario is part of a group of hotel guests vacationing at a fancy Hawaiian resort, with the social satire digging into the complexities of these wealthy guests and the resort’s eager-to-please employees.

With so much to celebrate right now, Daddario joined us for an episode of Collider Ladies Night to retrace her steps from the very beginning of her Hollywood journey to these new projects. Doctor Who to Gunpowder Milkshake: Karen Gillan’s Journey to Full-Blown Action Star Jul 15, 2021
    Show notes

This episode of Collider Ladies Night marks a very special occasion. Karen Gillan is officially the show’s first returning guest! Back in 2019, we went heavy on Gillan’s work behind the lens and in the Jumanji franchise, but round two gave us the opportunity to discuss Gillan’s early modeling days, her journey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe playing Nebula and, of course, her new Netflix movie, Gunpowder Milkshake.

Gillan leads the film as Sam. Back when she was just 12-years-old, Sam’s mother Scarlet (Lena Headey) was forced to abandon her, leaving Sam to be raised by The Firm, the crime syndicate her mother worked for. Now as an adult, Sam’s a successful and very skilled hit-woman, just like her mother once was. However, when a job forces Sam to choose between The Firm and an innocent young girl (Chloe Coleman), Sam opts to do what’s right, putting a massive target on her back in the process.

Check out this episode of Ladies Night to hear all about how Gillan capitalized on the popularity of Doctor Who, what it's been like developing Nebula with James Gunn, Joe and Anthony Russo and now Taika Waititi, which Gunpowder Milkshake co-star she was geeking out over the most and so much more!

How Iliza Shlesinger Went from Last Comic Standing to Good on Paper Jul 08, 2021
    Show notes

Acting isn’t a new thing for Iliza Shlesinger. As she told us on Collider Ladies Night, “I've been auditioning at a really high level for a very long time.” It looks like that persistence is paying off because her film career is taking off in a very big way right now. She starred opposite Mark Wahlberg in 2020’s Spenser Confidential, shared the screen with Vanessa Kirby and Ellen Burstyn in the Academy Award nominated Pieces of a Woman, and now she’s celebrating the release of a new Netflix movie she wrote, executive produced and stars in, Good on Paper.

Inspired by her own true experience, Shlesinger leads Good on Paper as Andrea Singer, a stand-up comic who’s always prioritized her career. However, when she meets a guy (Ryan Hansen) who seems to check all the boxes, Andrea starts to think it might be time to give a relationship a go. But the big question is, is this guy really everything he appears to be?

With Good on Paper now available to watch on Netflix, Shlesinger joined us for an episode of Collider Ladies Night to recap how she went from Last Comic Standing winner to headlining her own feature film.

Why Mare of Easttown Gives Betty Gilpin Hope for Breaking Out of the “Barbie Shell” Jul 01, 2021
    Show notes

I’m of the mind that Betty Gilpin is currently one of the best of the best in film and television. Of course the success of Netflix’s GLOW was a major game-changer, earning Gilpin three Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, but it’s the pairing of her work in GLOW and The Hunt in particular that firmly solidifies that Gilpin is someone who has range for days to show off - if the industry would just continue to let her tap into it. While celebrating the release of Amazon’s The Tomorrow War, Gilpin joined us for an episode of Collider Ladies Night to retrace her steps in the industry and to discuss her hopes for the future.

Hear all about how Mare of Easttown served as an inspiration, how Gilpin dealt with the cancellation of GLOW, what it was like working with director Chris McKay on The Tomorrow War and loads more on this edition of Collider Ladies Night!
