    Coaching the Whole Educator

Coaching the Whole Educator, hosted by education consultant and author Becca Silver, is a podcast on instructional coaching, teacher leadership, and school leadership for anyone who wants to strengthen their educators’ effectiveness and resilience, especially the ones who need it most. Each week, you’ll hear quick tips, proven coaching strategies, and coaching mindsets designed to keep you on top of your game.

This show is rooted in a human-centered coaching approach, where we get things done through people’s humanity, not around it. Whether you’re new to instructional coaching or a seasoned coach or leader looking for fresh perspective, you’ll learn how to focus on the mindsets and motivations driving unproductive behaviors. By getting to the root of teacher resistance, using the Catalyst Mindsets framework from Becca Silver’s book, The Resistance Solution, you’ll discover how to build stronger relationships, lead with clarity, and create lasting impact in your school.

You can reach Becca Silver at info@thewholeeducator.com.

    Show notes

In this episode Becca and Melissa (Mia) Pumo, coach of school leadership and instructional coaches, discuss the 2nd level of resistance: they resist change because they don't trust you. Remember- just because you consider yourself trustworthy, doesn't mean they trust you. Without trust, no amount of clarifying expectations and holding teachers accountable will help. A lack of trust means you will get pushback the whole way through the change. A trusting relationship makes change easier, quicker and more effective. Listen in to find out the different components of trust and how to intentionally assess and build it with your leadership team and teachers.

Becca and Mia Pumo kick off a 4 part series on how to address resistance utilizing a 4 part framework. In this episode, they dive into the first level of resistance: when educators resist because they don't understand why the change is happening. Often, leaders are connected to why change is happening and it is assumed that teachers are connected to that why as well. Becca and Mia share concrete action steps to take that will empower you to address educators that are resisting change because they do not understand why this change is happening.

#101: Beyond the Words: How Nonverbals Can Make or Break a Coaching Conversation Aug 25, 2024
    Show notes

Have you ever felt like someone was saying one thing, but their body was telling a completely different story? That’s the power of nonverbal communication.

Veronica Love Olalla, CEO of Newfield Network, discusses what we intend to say and what our bodies actually broadcast. Our bodies are the front lines of communication. It's not just about what you say, but how you say it – the tilt of your head, the flicker of your eyes, the subtle shift of your weight. These silent signals can either invite others in or build walls.

Leaders who master the art of nonverbal communication are present, empathetic, and genuinely connected. By tuning into our own bodies and the bodies of others, we can connect to those we coach and lead in different ways that empowers our human-centered coaching work.

So, the next time you find yourself in a conversation, remember: your body is speaking volumes. Are you listening?

#98: Cracking the Code: The Mindsets Behind Growth [Research Rundown] Aug 04, 2024
    Show notes

In this episode, Becca dives deep into the concept of learning mindsets. While growth mindset has been a popular focus, research shows that it's just one piece of a larger puzzle. To truly support teacher and student growth, instructional coaches and school leaders must consider four essential mindsets: belonging, growth mindset, self-efficacy, and value & purpose.

The episode emphasizes the importance of understanding these mindsets within the hierarchy of learner needs. Before focusing on instructional strategies, coaches and leaders must ensure teachers feel safe, valued, and capable. By diagnosing which mindset might be missing, coaches can provide targeted support to help teachers overcome obstacles and achieve their goals.

This episode offers valuable insights for coaches and leaders looking to create a more supportive and effective learning environment for all.
