Building a DIY Podcast Studio Dec 21, 2022
    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

In this episode, I’m covering how to get the best home recording by creating a makeshift studio in your home. I realize not everyone has the money or space to build out a professional podcast studio, so we’re going to work with what you got! Surprisingly, there are a ton of places in your home where you can get really good sound, and they won’t cost you anything.

My goal is to motivate you to create content and not worry about all the details, such as thinking you need a professional studio or vocal booth. These worries tend to hold people back from ever starting. Believe me, I’ve been producing podcasts for 7 years and JUST started this podcast a few months ago.

I’d love for you to try some of the tips in this episode. I hope they help you find a recording solution that sounds best for YOU. Oh, and make sure you’re using a dynamic microphone. Your recording will sound like caca regardless of where you record if you’re using a condenser microphone.

    Episode Tips:

    • Be aware of the time of day you’re recording and notice how much outside noise the mic is picking up
    • Try recording in your closet, closets sound great!
    • Record in your car, cars are quiet and have little to no reverb
    • Early mornings or late nights are the quietest
    • Avoid recording in rooms with hardwood floors
    • Rooms with rugs and furniture absorb a lot of slapback and reverb
    • If you travel a lot, build a pillow fort. It’ll act as a vocal booth
    • Learn about your microphone, for podcasting you’re going to want to get really close to the mic capsule when you record.
    • Wear headphones! You need to be able to hear what the microphone is hearing
    • Only use dynamic mics
    • Gik Acoustics has really cheap foam and acoustic panels

How To Edit a Podcast: Basic Editing vs. Advanced Editing Dec 14, 2022
    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

This episode is about basic vs advanced editing and mixing for podcasts.

I define basic editing and mixing as simply cutting off the beginning and end of the recording to create a defined start and end point, as well as doing a basic mix to clean up the audio and enhance the voices.

To me, advanced editing and mixing is a more hands-on process that involves cleaning up mouth clicks, filler words, verbal ticks, false starts, removing background noise, adding in music, adjusting pacing, and performing content editing to shape a narrative.

In this episode, you will learn the following:

The importance of defining a start and end point for your episodes

How to use Descript to perform a basic edit and mix of your podcast

How to use "Studio Sound" by Descript

What advanced editing is, and whether or not its necessary for your podcasting goals

Nick Nalbach: How To Launch a Podcast By Building Trust and Credibility With An Audience Nov 30, 2022

In this podcast episode, Nick Nalbach, a podcasting launch pro and founder of Nine-Five to Freedom, teaches us how to take control of our lives and journey to wealth and freedom by strategically crafting an effective podcast launch—eagerly building relationships and creating a powerful community along the way.
"When you realize that you can be in control, then you can make those decisions. If you're in a season of life where you're hustling or if you're in a season of life where you're kind of kicking back because you did hustle for so long and now you're kind of reaping the benefits of that." - Nick Nalbach
    This is Nick Nalbach's story...
Nick Nalbach is originally from Wisconsin and had been working in project management, moving around to different cities until he and his family settled in West Virginia. Wanting to get a leg up in life, he read the book "Millionaire Fast Lane" and was inspired to pursue avenues of wealth that weren't focused on a 9-5 job. He was intrigued by the idea of having control over his life and financial stability. Pat Flynn, the host of "Smart Passive Income" helped him realize that he too could start a business. In 2020 Nick started the "Nine-Five Podcast" to share stories of people who went through the same process of transitioning to entrepreneurship.
In this episode, you will learn the following:
    1. Discover how to gain control over your life and career
    2. Learn about the power of passive income opportunities, and how to make the most of them.
    3. Uncover the importance of living intentionally, and how to make the most of different seasons of life.

In this episode, I'm covering my favorite podcast, accessories. In addition to a mic, to really pull off a good podcast, you've got to have a few accessories in my mind, and these things are going to help you with your workflow and just ease the overall production. You never know when you might need something, and having a few additional tools can definitely help you along your podcasting journey.

Before we get started, it is Thanksgiving week and I want to say thank you. Thank you for listening to the podcast. Thank you for believing in me. My goal is to be a resource to you to help you with your podcast production. I encourage you all to think about what you're thankful for. I think so often we think about all the things we don't have in life, instead of focusing on what we do have. By focusing on gratitude we can shift our mindset, and start living in more abundance.

How To Monetize a Podcast With Amazon Affiliate Marketing Nov 16, 2022
    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

Affiliate Marketing with Amazon is a great way to make money with your podcast. I’m an Amazon Associate and I make money every month by promoting products in my show notes, blog posts, social media channels, and in my YouTube video descriptions. Believe me, If I can do it, YOU can do it.

In This Episode, You Will Learn The Following:

    1. How to make money from your podcast through affiliate marketing with Amazon
    2. How to get started with the Amazon Associates program
    3. The Amazon Influencer Program - create an Amazon online store and get paid to promote products you love

    What Is Affiliate Marketing

If you didn’t know, Affiliate Marketing is just selling other peoples products. You get a commission if someone buys a product from you. Amazon has a great program for this, it’s called Amazon Associates. It’s wildly popular amongst podcasters.

    How It Works

You sign up for the program and share links to products related to your podcast/business. Amazon will provide you with a unique link that’s traced back to you. You can link to just about any product on Amazon. If someone purchases something through your link, you get a commission.

Where To Share Your Amazon Affiliate Links

Your podcast show notes, YouTube descriptions, blog posts, and social media accounts are all great places to promote products, and share your links. Your goal should be to drive as much traffic as you can to Amazon, via your links.

The key is to only promote products that you're passionate about, and that are relevant to your niche. That way, you're providing value to your listeners and you're more likely to make sales. I've found that the best way to get started is sharing links with friends and family.

How To Sign Up To Become an Amazon Associate

    Go to https://affiliate-program.amazon.com/home

There you can read through the qualifications and learn about the program in more detail.

    The Qualifications

To get approved for the program you need to be a content creator of some form. Amazon doesn’t say what the EXACT qualifications are, but, it’s my understanding that you need to be putting out content. As a podcaster, you shouldn’t have a problem getting approved. I don’t think you need to have a massive following. You just need to have SOME sort of audience and be consistently creating.

You also need to make 3 sales in your first 6 months in the program, or you’ll get dropped. This actually happened to me the first time I signed up a couple years ago. To avoid getting dropped, and to make your first 3 sales, I recommend sharing some links with friends and family. Ask them to purchase something from you. This should be an easy way to make sure you hit your sales goal.

    Amazon Commission Structure

The Amazon commission structure ranges from 20% per sale, to 1% p

Why You Need to Wear Headphones When Recording a Podcast Nov 09, 2022
    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

This week, I'm talking about why wearing headphones is important when podcasting, and how you can choose the right pair for your needs. I see podcasters who don’t wear headphones when recording, and it drives me NUTS. If you or your guest aren’t wearing headphones while recording, the episode is at risk of having a lot of audio issues. In addition, hosts who don’t wear headphones are missing out on the opportunity to improve their style, sound, and approach. You can’t fix what you can’t hear.

Reasons To Wear Headphones When Recording a Podcast

    • You need to know how you sound on the microphone so you can make adjustments on the fly. Perhaps you’re too far from the mic and your voice sounds faint. Maybe you’re too close and you’re hearing distortion. You need to be able to adapt to this and make changes during a session.
    • It’s important to know how your guest sounds, so you can have them adjust their positioning as needed.
    • It’s possible there is ambient noise in your recording environment that you can’t quite hear without headphones. In my experience, the faint hum of an air conditioner, or the white noise of cars passing by outside, is WAY more noticeable when you’re wearing headphones. Ambient noise can ruin podcasts, but, you may not know these sounds are being picked up by your microphone if you don’t have headphones on.
    • Without headphones, you can’t hear if you're popping your p’s or breathing loudly into the mic
    • In a remote recording, if your guest doesn’t have headphones on, the conversation you're having will be playing back through their computer speakers. This will get picked up by their microphone and create a feedback loop, which is an echo-like effect. It ruins recordings and can’t really be removed from the audio file.
    • Headphones give you the opportunity to get comfortable with your voice and tonality. Hearing yourself up close gives you a lot of internal feedback. If you can hear yourself loud and clear, you can practice making improvements in your style, adjust your tone, and ultimately play around until you like the way you sound. This will improve your podcast and improve your hosting ability.

    My Favorite Pair of Headphones

Sony MDR7506 - This is an affiliate link

I wear these to record, edit and mix my podcast, and my client's podcasts. They’re super comfortable, do a great job at rejecting outside noise, sound excellent, and come with a ¼ headphone adapter, so you can plug them in anywhere. They produce crystal clear high frequencies, full-bodied in-your-face mid’s, and accurate bass.
