Vol. 55 - Mutemath by Mutemath Jul 05, 2023

Show notes

We’re breaking free of the Typical as we cover the self-titled, debut record from Mutemath. This is a wishlist record for TJ, and it was picked by our guest, Adrian Hummel. Adrian was a DJ at 89.7 Power FM in DFW, which we mention quite often on the show. He’s also a huge fan and owner of some one-of-a-kind Mutemath memorabilia. Kylan discovered he may have been cursed by a witch, but other than that we had a great time talking Mutemath.

Vol. 54 - Step Up To The Microphone by Newsboys Jun 28, 2023

Show notes

We’re stepping right up to the microphone to cover our third Newsboys record, Step Up To The Microphone. This record abounds with musical touchpoints, and we make it our mission to identify as many as humanly possible. It’s also never too early to start planning your Halloween costume, and we’ve got a few solid ideas from this episode. If the truth be known whether this record is a bop or a flop, do you really wanna know?

Vol. 53 - Kaleidoscope Superior by Earthsuit Jun 20, 2023

Show notes

Once upon a one time, one time, one time, one time, one time there was a podcast that covered Kaleidoscope Superior by Earthsuit. Luminary wizard Jonathan Hoogendoorn joined the hosts on their quest to search out and find the mysterious being known only as the Schizophreniac. Many obstacles arose along their journey. There were harrowing sky flashings, wheels within wheels, and a narrow escape from the deadly creature, Funkmouth Tobootcha. Nevertheless, they persisted against the grain of defeat. Our heroes completed their quest, returned home riding on a whitehorse, and lived happily ever after in Osmosis Land.

Vol. 51 - Abishai Collingsworth of Wolves At The Gate Jun 07, 2023

Show notes

This week we’re joined by Abishai Collingsworth, drummer extraordinaire in Wolves At The Gate and Project 86. He’s also played with The Overseer, Becoming the Archetype, The Ongoing Concept, and Colton Dixon, which is quite the resume. We get to hear from Abishai on how he got into the scene and the impressive career he’s had so far. We hope you enjoy our conversation with Abishai because there may be another one in the very near future. We only have one question: are you aware of the movement?

Vol. 50 - Larry-Boy: The Soundtrack May 24, 2023

Show notes

For our 50th volume we are indeed covering Larry-Boy: The Soundtrack from 1999. We thought it would be fun to get a little goofy to celebrate 50 volumes of CJN. You can still expect the same hard-hitting critical analysis even when we're covering music from an animated kids show about a vegetable superhero. Surprisingly, there's a lot more to this soundtrack than you might expect. Mind your peas & cukes, set plungers to listen, and let's go save Bumblyburg!

Vol. 48 - Roman Haviland of Maylene & the Sons of Disaster May 11, 2023

Show notes

This week we’re joined by Roman Haviland, the founding bassist of Maylene & the Sons of Disaster. Roman is the second longest-tenured member in Maylene’s history, and he’s got some amazing stories from his time in the band. We had such a great time talking with Roman, and we covered a lot in this episode. You may have been told the river went dry, but Roman’s wealth of stories is flowing like the hell breaking loose at Sicard Hollow.

Vol. 47 - Maylene & the Sons of Disaster May 03, 2023

Show notes

Caution: Southern Metal Ahead. Tune your guitars to Drop D and head down to the dirty south as we cover the debut, self-titled record from Maylene & the Sons of Disaster. It’s a long road home to Panther Creek, but we’re joined by Zach Jordan and guest host, Joe Cutler, for our journey. We’ve got breaking news in typography, speculations on the true identity of John Jacobs, and plenty of terrible southern accents as we learn the tale of mother Maylene and her sons of disaster.

For some context, if you wanna hear the greatest DFW Maylene cover band Del Sur, you can check out for free on Bandcamp. https://ofthesouth.bandcamp.com/

Vol. 46 - Floating World by Anathallo Apr 26, 2023

Show notes

Do you enjoy chamber folk with ‘too much glockenspiel’? Do you revile it? Have you always wanted to hear a roughly accurate cliff notes version of a strange and awesome Japanese folk tale?

Maybe you’re wondering which Josh prefers most between Anathallo’s Floating World, Springsteen’s Nebraska, or his own bed? Curious about why this is one of TJ’s wishlist albums?

Or perhaps you enjoy the idea of the CJN fellas tearing an unassuming Pitchfork journalist to utter shreds?

If any of the above piques your interest…boy oh boy, have we got the Church Jams volume for you!

Float along through the bizarre world of Anathallo’s first full length album on a major label, as the CJN Crew dig deep with some artistic heart to heart moments, and Kylan constructs an innovative song-scoring system!
