Vol. 38 - Scream Through The Walls by As Cities Burn Feb 08, 2023

Show notes

Really really, though, this is it, this is it: the final album in our As Cities Burn miniseries. It’s been ten years since the last proper ACB full-length record, and we’re curious what Louisiana’s finest jazz band sounds like all these years later. We also discuss our favorite shrimpin’ songs, accidentally sneaking into a Bo Burnham show, and TJ writes a worship song on the spot. Since this is the final entry in our miniseries we give our final ACB album rankings and our Top 10 song rankings. Thanks for joining us on this miniseries adventure!

Vol. 37 - Hawkboy & King Folly Feb 01, 2023

Show notes

As we continue our ACB mini-series, we take a detour into Hawkboy. For those of you that don't know, Hawkboy was the side project of Cody Bonnette and Aaron Lunsford, and they released 2 EPs in 2011! And we decided to cover both of them!

Did TJ open for Hawkboy? Do one of these EPs contain the best Bright Eyes B-Side? We answer these questions and even talk about the two ACB singles that dropped before Scream Through The Walls!

This is an action-packed episode you won't want to miss. Also this is our chance to make a grassroots campaign to release the Hawkboy songs on streaming services!

Vol. 36 - Hell Or High Water by As Cities Burn Jan 25, 2023

Show notes

The CJN As Cities Burn mini-series continues with Hell Or High Water! Come Now Sleep left us re-thinking our rankings, but Hell Or High Water may provide the perfect rebuttal. As Cities Burn fulfills their destiny as Louisiana's finest jazz band and almost immediately morphs into Hawkboy, all on the same record. If Lady Blue has you going ‘round and ‘round throw yourself Into the Sea of sweet, sweet bass on this record to cure your Pirate Blues.

Welcome to Part 2 of our 5 Part As Cities Burn mini-series! Take the train to the Interpolation Station as the CJN Crew is joined by the strong Jon Cannon to discuss the second album by "Lousiana's Finest Jazz Band", 2007's Come Now Sleep. Also featuring Beautiful Producer Josh's dulcet tones reading the album credits at the end.

Audio Nerd Alert: We had a few audio issues with TJ and Jon, but bear with us, the content more than makes up for the quality!

Vol. 33 - Peace by Sufjan Stevens Dec 14, 2022

Show notes

Hark! A Christmas pod proclaims! Bursting forth with spirit, glad tidings, and a healthy helping of humbuggery, this seasonal affective volume finds the Church Jams fellas grappling with the reason for the season: Sufjams! (Duh!)…

𝘗𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘦, the 5th and final volume of the 2006 collection Songs for Christmas, from everyone’s favorite para-Christian folk rock iconoclast, is an eclectic combination of highly original Christmas tunes and lesser known old seasonal standards (we’re talking 1500s). As we make our way through this sad-boi cosmic Christmas voyage full of conflict, comfort, and joy, Kylan shares some super accurate research about Stevens, Josh gets to relax for once, and TJ gets weird with roman deities and casparus prisms.

This episode is sufjam-packed with fish on bikes, honky-tonk choirs, spaceships, tonys, tinsel-time, and a surprise grinch. It’s sure to put you in the holiday spirit, or at least get you in your *feels*, so mash that play button! Happy Jams-mas to all!

Also, check out TJ’s cover of “Sister Winter” (a collab w/ Tanner Robinson), and let us know what you think!

Vol. 32 - Orion Walsh of Slow Coming Day Dec 07, 2022

Show notes

We’re back with another artist interview, and this time we’re joined by Orion Walsh of Slow Coming Day. We had a great time talking with Orion about the early days of the band, their time on Tooth & Nail, and hearing what the band is up to nowadays. Stick around to the end to hear how Orion fares when his emo knowledge is put to the ultimate test in another classic Kylan game.

Vol. 31 - ZOEgirl Jams Now Nov 30, 2022

Show notes

Unfortunately this week our regular CJN recording got messed up! When we went back to edit it there was some kind of crazy multi-dimensional feedback. Ah well, we'll try to upload it anyway. If you don't hear us on this episode then it's probably a version of Church Jams Now from a different dimension, one where previous guests Bethany Johnson, Faith Rugen, and Sarah Dickard host the show. They deep dive into the 2000 self-titled ZOEgirl album and it gets wild!

Thank you so much for jumping in with us and checking out this artifact of early 2000's CCM!If you like what you hear, please rate, review, subscribe, and follow!
