Let’s hustle! LUKE MILLETT (PRODUCER): Hey guys, welcome to episode 517 of the Chiro Hustle Podcast. I’m your producer, Luke Millett, and here’s your host, James Chester. JAMES CHESTER (HOST): So today we have the opportunity of interviewing Dr. Sebastian Bonin. And if you want to hear a story of how marketing is an act of kindness, stay tuned. Welcome back. This is another episode of the Chiro Hustle Podcast. Today we’re international. Well, America, but it’s Puerto Rico. So it’s really an honor to have Dr. Sebastian Bonin on with me today. We’re going to jump right into talking chiropractic business. We’re going to talk about the challenges and the successes within the chiropractic profession and where we see things going. But before we get into this episode, I just wanted to let everyone know the big why or why did we do what we do over here at Chiro Hustle. Well, first amendment is something that we stand for. That’s freedom of speech. We’ve never censored anyone, which I think is very powerful. We let everybody have a platform to speak their truth. We also believe in medical freedom and family health freedom. Those are things that everybody should take very serious for them, everyone in their lives, including themselves. We also protect the sacred trust. That’s BJ Palmer’s last words. If you guys want to know more about that, go and do a quick search. Find out what BJ Palmer’s sacred trust is. And you’re going to learn so much more about chiropractic than you ever knew before. We also support subluxation based chiropractic, innate intelligence and universal intelligence. We believe that when man or woman, the physical gets adjusted, it connects them to man or woman, the spiritual. And with that being said, Dr. Sebastian, welcome to the show. DR SEBASTIAN BONNIN DC (GUEST): Oh, man. Oh, I got the good ones, bro. Yes, connecting man to physical with man to spiritual 100%. I’m the scientist keeps validating that. Hey, I’m great, man. Just having the hottest day in Puerto Rico in years. So just enjoying really looking forward for a conversation today. See where it goes. JAMES CHESTER (HOST): Yeah. So chiropractic is a big idea. And I know that this show supports the chiropractic profession when it comes to sharing this story, documenting the story. I call it building this tapestry of chiropractic together. And I think it’s really powerful after 1200 interviews, you know, your episode actually 517, but I’ve been to so many events where I’ll interview 10 people a day. And that’s where I was like, this is called Chiro hustle, man. This is what we do. And at any level, your story matters. And I’m sure that there’s friends, family, colleagues, new patients that are going to listen to this old patients that will listen to this and they’ll say, yeah, I didn’t know that about that guy. So why don’t we reintroduce you? Tell us your chiropractic story. How did you get into the beautiful profession? DR SEBASTIAN BONNIN DC (GUEST): Absolutely, man. I was 17 years old or 16 years old. And all my life, I’ve just been surfing all my life, surfing just in the beach, this water sports, just getting pounded at the beach, pounded at the with the waves and skiing and a very physical and active youth. So of course, I didn’t know about chiropractic. I was amazingly self-located all that time. Didn’t know it. All I knew was I couldn’t stand up for long periods of time without starting to get at this comfort in my low back. And in school, I’ve always had, I was very anxious in school, like very high energy, like totally jittery. And finally, one day I had an accident surfing. There’s no accidents had to happen, of course. And I fell, I hit my head, kind of like, I’m like, oh, it feels so good, but I know I’m under water. I need to get up there. I’m like, oh, but I feel so good. I want to sleep. Oh, but you need to get up there. So basically, I was not unconscious underwater. I finally came out almost drowned, but the impact just completely wrecked my neck. And then I felt like this hot fluid come from the back to the front. It was blood. I felt it was blood. So I’m like, oh my God, I don’t want to pass out here. And I was really far out in the sea. So I met it, went to school the next day. And my friend sees me. I’m like, hey, what’s up? How you guys doing? And she’s like, hey, what happened to your neck? And I told her story. She said, you got to go to my dad. You’re most probably subluxated. I’m like, what? He’s like, yeah, you got to go to a chiropractor. I’m like, all right, so I’ll go. So I went. And after the evaluation, 16 years old, no neck curve, almost no lumbar curve already. That L5 disc was showing signs of degeneration. And sure enough, it was like, all right, let’s get this done. I received my first adjustment, James. And it was like, oh, OK, whatever, I feel that you lose her, went home, went to sleep. And I remember that first night, I went to bed. I woke up and eight hours passed. And I did not move. Like I literally died in eight hours. I went out. And the body heals while it sleeps and runs. So I went to school and I felt my energies were organized. And I saw that happen 100% of the time with autistic children, for example, who after getting, starting to get adjusted, they’ll be more organized. They’ll still express their personality through their condition. But it will be organized. And they will smile and eye contact, right? And then I went surfing. And I literally felt that I was driving a Volkswagen from the 1980s. And I was immediately on a freaking Ferrari. And it was just I just felt my body real different. I’m like, man, I’m not doing anything else other than getting adjusted. So I went back and I’m like, dude, what is this? What’s happening to me? What’s going on? And he told me the chiropractic story. The body heals itself. And I’m like, yeah, I know. And that’s the role of your nerve system. And I’m like, yeah, that’s the computer of the… And it’s like, yeah, well, you have an intelligence that expresses through that nerve system. I’m like, yeah, yeah. Yeah, the body’s incredible. The body’s amazing. It’s super intelligent. And he’s like, yeah. And he’s like, well, you’re spine houses that nerve system. I’m like, yeah, you’re right. Well, if the spine is in line, your nerve system is free, you function well. Your spine is not in line. Are you so on your x-ray? The x-ray is your nerve system can work properly. It’s not it’s interfere. So the innate intelligence of your body cannot express through that physical body as it was intended and designed to do. I’m like, yeah, I know. And he’s like, well, that’s what I do. I’m like, wait, what? So there’s a profession that thinks like me. JAMES CHESTER (HOST): I’m like, so arrogant, right? I was like, yeah, you can say that. DR SEBASTIAN BONNIN DC (GUEST): I’m like, so you help people. So with your hands, you don’t have to inject anybody because I wanted to be a pediatric. I love children. So I wanted to be a pediatric doctor, but I didn’t want to inject anybody because I’m a… I don’t like needles. I really don’t like needles. So that was my… How can I be a pediatrician? If I don’t like to inject… That was my rough, right? So he said, yeah, so it’s always my… With your hands, that’s it. So you help people heal with your hands. Yes. And there’s a profession like a science that is like, yes, I’m like, that’s it. That’s what I want to do. That’s it. I love that. What do you study? Is that the closest one to Puerto Rico? Is that the best one? Then all right, I’m done. So my senior year, I already knew I was going to be in Puerto Rico two years in the University of Puerto Rico, then I was going to go to Life University, finish my undergrad, did the doctorate, and came back. And in those four years of… It was six years. The profession is eight years, but you can do it in six, six and a half. I did it in six. And man, I did like, what was like 15, 16 mission trips that we did and just visiting every possible doctor that you could imagine, upper cervical, just like really like, like I use my student money to build my chiropractic. I didn’t buy crazy cars. I didn’t buy a crazy furniture or I didn’t have a sound system. We didn’t have TV, cable. Man, we were just… I remember I was the only student who had a titron in our apartment. We’re like, okay, let’s see if this pattern work really is true. Oh my God. Yeah, it’s a pattern. Oh, shit. Like, wow. Okay, let me adjust you. Oh, shit. I think I’m so excited. You hold on. Just playing with that and that’s basically what I did through my chiropractic years. I just focused on becoming the best possible chiropractor I could be. I knew that the university was just training me to just get a license. I had amazing mentors, very different. I like whoever mastered philosophy, I followed that, but usually they mastered philosophy, but then they suck at the business and they’re bankrupt. They never like really could transfer that philosophy into what I consider success, which was a high volume practice. That was my vision of success. You’ve got to be careful how you define success, right? So it’s my vision. So I’m not saying that high volume is the standard for success. I don’t know what it is for you. Whatever you’re listening, you got to design and define that for yourself. For me, it was just how can I see the most people that have the most fun? That was my mantra. I got to be success and fun can compete with each other. So that’s also how I ended up getting a coach and teaching and learning the systems and then dancing and doing all that. Then they asked me to be speaker because I love to speak and then just keep expanding. Then I all finished when I heard my back and that’s when I started then to transition to becoming then the CEO of my office and then the hurricane hit. So everything went to a halt. We lost everything. I kept my team. So the rainy day fun really got empty real quick, but we kept the team even though we were averaging 120K a month, having the best year to 5K a month. And that was tough times when we can do a whole episode on that story. It’s not the same when you’re really down and then you just go further down. You don’t know. You don’t have that contrast versus when you’re up here and then you’re down to where you’ve never been before because you’re not only down financially, you’re only down mentally and emotionally and you can sense like, wait, why am I going angry to bed? This is so not me. And you know how it is? Like those two the most important moments in my days when I wake up and before I go to sleep, it’s sacred times, man. It’s intentional. You have to, I don’t know you, but me, I have to wake up and just be. And feel and do the things that I got to do in my morning to prepare for my day so that I can at the end of the day, do an inventory and then go to sleep. Happy joyful for what happened today and then excited for what’s coming tomorrow. And that’s intentional, man. That’s not like, so imagine just going through all that hurricane stuff and not feeling none of that mojo. And it’s bad. You know, you want to know how I came out? Came out of it from a freaking spinal screening. I did. I hated them and but I had to do it. It was, you know, I remember going to bed saying, all right, that’s it. Last night I’m going angry. That’s last. I’m going to allow myself to be pissed off angry and frustrated for the next five minutes. I’m going to go full out these five minutes. And then after those five minutes, that’s it. Throw everything changes and I went to sleep and then, you know, nothing really changed. I just went to the office of my shorts and t-shirts sweating, mosquitoes biting everywhere. There’s no light and electricity. And then it was like, man, in a just thought flash, right? Go to the supermarket. That’s where the people are. And I’m like, oh, man. Oh, are you kidding me? I got to do a spinal screening. No, you got to be kidding, man, because in, in, I don’t like the word celebrity, but people consider me that here in Puerto Rico. I mean, TV every week, just sharing the chiropractic message and story and social media. And I’m just like really heavy and I take that very seriously. And, you know, like being a spinal screen is like, what are you doing here? Like, what are you standing there? Like, right? It was a very humbling moment, but, you know, you got to do what you got to do, man. That’s, that’s it. It’s not about you. It’s about those people that don’t know you exist. And that’s what we say. Marketing is an act of kindness, you know, marketing is a message that saves lives that is a solution. I’m not saying it’s the only solution. I’m saying it’s a solution is a truth is a truth chiropractic is a truth. The more science goes into it, the more chiropractic gets validated. So man, it’s just I’m going to share with you my line. Are you ready? I’m ready. All right. So it was this. Imagine the smallest supermarket that the aisle is you can only fit me and then half of me. I’m not big bro. Like that thing is not for obese. No, these people can fit there. No, these people go ever go there. They can’t like that shopping carts this small. So there’s only three shopping carts. So as I’m handing them the shopping cart, I will be like, Hey, the soup of the days lentil soup and the special of the days, the chiropractic evaluation in my office. I’m Dr. Sebastian Bonnet on the chiropractors. See you outside if you’re interested. That’s it. JAMES CHESTER (HOST): That was it, man, that was it. DR SEBASTIAN BONNIN DC (GUEST): Ten people came up from those four hours. Still those 10 people are coming into the office all these years later. And that I just told you a really long story, really short. It was so tough. But that started to turn things in turning the energy around. And from there, it’s just been such an awesome journey, man. JAMES CHESTER (HOST): And now you’re using this model of what you figured out and how you went and built the practice. And now you’re teaching other people how to do that. DR SEBASTIAN BONNIN DC (GUEST): Yeah, because I was I was already, we were already coaching the Hispanic doctors. So when all this hurricane situation was happening, that’s where I met Dr. Steven Franson. And I’m like, man, listen, I’m ready to scale my vision and really scale my influence and my impact. I really want to transform healthcare in Puerto Rico. I mean, we live on an island where the message hits the coast and bounces back, hit the…
