Episode 256 - The Hannah Frank Trio Jun 21, 2010
    Show notes

Hannah Frank (acoustic guitar, lead vocals, songwriting)For fifteen years, Hannah has crafted a style that is part blues, rock, country, alternative, downhome, folk and somehow surreal. As a guitar player she prefers heavy strings and strong sounding acoustic guitars that are non-rubbery. Her guitar idols include Chet Atkins, Brigham Sweet, Son House and Mississippi John Hurt. Lately she's been adding some rhythm to the mix and working on the inevitable switchover to electric guitar. All members below also assist with composition and arranging:John Peters (fretless bass)John is a session and live performance bassist with the moniker "Prism Blue". Visit www.prismblue.com. A composer, bass player and keyboard player, he also creates music within his project "Vonic" an atmosphereic beat-founded experience. John's Warwick bass and smooth style is unlike any bassist you've heard before- it holds down the groove while somehow also "glowing." If you've heard some of Joni Mitchell's work with Jaco, you can appreciate what the fretless bass adds.Victor Sanders (electric guitar)Saying that Victor "kind of knows how to use a pedal board" is like saying Picasso "kind of knew how to paint." Victor's playing is enjoyable and a supreme compliment magnet for guitar players and laypersons alike. It's not just the pedal board which creates sounds you've never heard before-- it's the ability to add just what each song needs. Victor's playing creates a vibe around the show that is magic and must be experienced. Victor is an established sound engineer and one of the most recognizable guitarists in Chicago, working with notable folk/acoustic acts both at the local and national level.

    Episode 253 - John Craigie Apr 22, 2010
    Show notes

Before open mics, before showcase slots, and before the hype, there was the traveling folk singer. Woody Guthrie, Ramblin Jack, Leadbelly, and others traveled the country armed with nothing but a guitar and a head full of songs. And while the tradition has long been shadowed by the ever growing music industry, the folk singer is still out there. John Craigie is one. Doing his best to keep the tradition alive, he travels from town to town, telling stories and singing songs. Some nights to a crowded house, some nights for two people. His songs and stories cover the spectrum of human emotion. Some funny, some sad, some bitter and some sweet. With his roots style, Craigie has been gaining a cult following throughout the country. Despite the lack of any of the tools of the modern aggressively popular musician, his music continues to spread.John just started his Spring 2010 Midwest Tour of over 30 cities and towns. He will be stopping in Chicago on April 30th and will be playing at The Store , 2002 N. Halsted, Chicago, IL 60614 and it's a killer bill with CAU alumni Chicago Farmer.

    Episode 252 - Bob and Pricilla Apr 14, 2010
    Show notes

Originally formed in the Chicago-land area, Bob and Pricilla began Folkin' up the music scene in 2008. Immediately after this acoustic duo began writing songs together, they made a bee-line to the recording studio. While there, Bob Salihar (formerly of The Giving Tree Band and Oucho Sparks) and Pricilla Wallis had a hand in producing their first album Bob and Pricilla Till, Tomorrow. With their insightful and self-reflective lyrical stylings, accompanied by an uncompromising string section, Bob and Pricilla churn out their original "new old-timey" compositions. They love dense bluegrass instrumentation, but when it comes down to it, this duo is really all about the songs. With standout tracks like "Mary's Highway" and "Till Tomorrow" don't be surprised if you find Bob and Pricilla at the top of the folk music scene and beyond. With their album completed, Bob and Pricilla began performing at venues all over the mid-west. From cafes and clubs to festivals.

    Episode 251 - Herbietunes Apr 11, 2010
    Show notes

Christine Knodle joined me for an afternoon of wonderful storytelling music by Chicagoan Herbietunes aka Herbie Gaines. We were captivated by his lyrics and the humor of life's follies that he so perfectly portrays. You will understand as you listen to "Northshore Girl" and "Subprime" how acurate his humor hits the point. This is a man that you must see live. He can be found all around Chicago at great places like The Gallery Cabaret which is the last bastion of free music seven days a week and the beautifully renovated Skokie Theatre.
