9/15: Hurricane Sally bears down on the Gulf Coast, as wildfires ravage the West. Pres Trump doesn't accept climate change as a factor. Sep 15, 2020
    Show notes

The effects of Hurricane Sally can already be felt this morning as it bears down on the Gulf Coast, forecasters warn it could be a Category One when it makes landfall tomorrow. The explosion of wildfires in the West has killed dozens of people in three states. In California, more than three million acres have burned while about 16,500 firefighters are trying to quell the flames. In California, President Trump dismissed scientific evidence that climate change is behind the extreme weather. Democratic nominee Joe Biden called him a "climate arsonist" who is endangering Americans. The gunman who ambushed and shot two Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies is still on the run. Two major college football conferences that decided not to play this fall are now re-thinking that move.

9/14: Communities recovering from Hurricane Laura prepare for another storm. Wildfires kill dozens and bring air quality concerns to the West. Sep 14, 2020
    Show notes

Millions of Americans are facing two growing threats from mother nature this morning. In the Gulf, Tropical Storm Sally is gaining strength as it barrels toward landfall tomorrow. It's expected to become a Category One hurricane and is threatening some of the same communities still recovering from Hurricane Laura. Raging wildfires in California, Oregon and Washington state are burning out of control, where at least 35 people have died. Smoke is creating dangerously bad air quality, including the worst air quality in the world in Portland, Oregon, according to one major index. A manhunt is underway for a gunman who ambushed two sheriff's deputies near Los Angeles. The deputies were shot in their parked patrol car Saturday night and are recovering in a local hospital. President Trump spoke during a day of campaigning in Nevada, including an indoor rally last night that was condemned as unsafe by the state's Democratic governor. The number of new coronavirus cases in America is dropping, but experts warn the decline may not last. In the last two weeks, the average number of daily reported cases is down by about 18%, but this fall and winter are expected to bring new dangers.

9/10: Tapes reveal Pres Trump knew danger of coronavirus while he downplayed risks in public. Deadly wildfires in the West consume entire communities. Sep 10, 2020
    Show notes

We now know President Donald Trump intentionally downplayed the threat of the pandemic for months. On March 19th, on tape, the president told journalist Bob Woodward, "I wanted to always play it down. I still like playing it down, because I don't want to create a panic." Since then, the U.S. death toll from the coronavirus has risen from 265 to more than 190,000. Bob Woodward also spoke to President Trump in June, amid nationwide protests against police brutality. The president admitted that systemic racism exists, something he's repeatedly denied in public. Woodward spoke with Scott Pelley about his interviews with the president in his first broadcast interview this Sunday for "60 Minutes." CBS News Chief Washington Correspondent Major Garrett joins us to discuss the fallout from the newly-revealed tapes. Nearly 100 major wildfires are burning out of control in a dozen western states. The disaster has destroyed hundreds or maybe thousands of homes in the region and killed at least seven people. The Department of Homeland Security rejects new claims from a whistleblower, who says he faced retaliation for refusing to change intelligence reports that did not fit President Trump's political objectives.
