9/24: Louisville erupts after a decision in the death of Breonna Taylor. Pres Trump levies new attacks on mail-in ballots. Sep 24, 2020
    Show notes

The anger over a grand jury's decision in the Breonna Taylor case has left two Louisville police officers in the hospital. They were shot last night during protests, after two officers involved in Taylor's death were not charged. The shootings marred what had been a largely peaceful demonstration of outrage, in a city where a state of emergency was declared in advance. We asked Kenneth Walker's attorney Steven Romines about the grand jury's conclusion that the officers' actions were justified, because Walker fired the first shot. President Trump is firing up the threat of a constitutional crisis after the November election, refusing to promise that he'll leave office peacefully if he is defeated. The CDC says 90% of Americans may still be vulnerable to the coronavirus. Thousands stood in line yesterday to pay their respects to Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, against a backdrop of rapid activity over Ginsburg's replacement.

9/23: Over 200,000 people in the U.S. have died from COVID. Republicans unite behind voting for a new Supreme Court justice. Sep 23, 2020
    Show notes

The angry debate over replacing Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg ran late into the night. Democrats are using every tool they have to slow down a Republican march to confirm President Trump's future nominee. This morning's ceremony for Justice Ginsburg began a three-day formal farewell in Washington. The House of Representatives held a moment of silence yesterday to acknowledge a painful milestone, that more than 200,000 people in the U.S. have died from coronavirus. At a campaign rally in Pittsburgh last night, President Trump defended his response to the pandemic, and mocked the precaution used by tens of millions of Americans, including his Democratic opponent. Tropical Storm Beta could slam Louisiana and Mississippi with severe floods later today, after the storm dumped 14 inches of rain in Houston. Kentucky's attorney general could announce as soon as today whether a grand jury called for criminal charges in the Breonna Taylor case. This morning, buildings in downtown Louisville are boarded up in case of protests, and the city has declared a state of emergency.

Directors of ‘RBG’ Documentary on Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg's Life and Legacy Sep 23, 2020
    Show notes

As we remember the life and legacy of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, we revisit a February 2019 conversation with the directors of the Oscar-nominated documentary “RBG” and “CBS This Morning: Saturday” co-host Michelle Miller. Filmmakers Betsy West and Julie Cohen discuss how Ginsburg went from being the “legal backbone” of the women’s rights movement to a pop culture phenomenon dubbed the “Notorious RBG” by millennials. They detail the obstacles Ginsburg faced as one of the few women enrolled in Harvard and Columbia Law Schools, her love story with her husband Marty Ginsburg, and the powerful wording of her dissenting opinions on the Supreme Court.

9/22: Previewing the historic tribute to Justice Ginsberg. The CDC issues new guidance on COVID, then quickly takes it back. Sep 22, 2020
    Show notes

One key Republican senator says they already have enough votes to confirm Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg's replacement before the election, even without knowing who President Trump will nominate. Democrats say they're not giving up the fight over the Supreme Court appointment, even though only two Republican senators have said that the vote should wait. Ginsburg will be honored on Friday as the first woman ever to lie in state at the U.S. Capitol. We expect to see thousands of people outside the Supreme Court as they memorialize her, and then members of the public can come to pay their own respects. Thousands of flags cover the National Mall in Washington, honoring the nearly 200,000 Americans killed by the coronavirus. This stands in stark contrast with President Trump's comment last night, saying the virus affects "virtually nobody."

9/21: Remembering Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg's legacy as a champion of equality. Her death sets up an intense partisan battle. Sep 21, 2020
    Show notes

As Americans are remembering the life of Justice Ginsberg, Republicans and Democrats in Congress are fighting over who will replace her, and when. President Donald Trump and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell have vowed to move fast, using their power to replace her. Democrats say voters should decide who chooses the new justice. White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany joins us live to discuss that President Trump will pick a third Supreme Court justice. People are leaving flowers and other tributes to Justice Ginsburg outside the Supreme Court. One more tropical storm is set to make landfall in the U.S., this time in Texas.

9/18: Pres Trump and Biden campaign. Airline executives are pleading to extend coronavirus relief. Sep 18, 2020
    Show notes

President Donald Trump is challenged by another of his own experts -- Dr. Anthony Fauci -- on when a coronavirus vaccine will be widely available. Both President Trump and Joe Biden campaigned last night. The president spoke at a mostly maskless outdoor rally in Wisconsin, which just hit a new daily record for COVID cases. Biden took questions at a socially distanced town hall. The remains of Hurricane Sally are dumping heavy rain in Virginia this morning, raising new concerns about flooding. U.S. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy has been temporarily blocked by a federal judge -- from making operational changes at the post office that could delay the delivery of ballots. The U.S. governement is banning new TikTok downloads starting on Sunday, and banning another Chinese-owned app, WeChat. Airline executives are in Washington, pleading with the White House and Congress to extend coronavirus relief.

9/17: Sally brings devastation and flooding to the Gulf. Pres Trump contradicts the CDC on vaccine timing and the importance of masks. Sep 17, 2020
    Show notes

Sally, which is now a tropical depression, is drenching parts of Georgia and Alabama after making landfall as a Category Two hurricane. Some areas have been inundated with nearly three feet of flood water, and hundreds of thousands of people are still without power. President Trump is bluntly contradicting CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield in an extraordinary public disagreement. Redfield told Congress that wearing a mask may protect more people from COVID than a vaccine will, and a vaccine is still months away. A few hours later, the president said Redfield was confused. At a forum last night, Attorney General William Barr brought up slavery in the context of the coronavirus. One of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies who were ambushed and shot has been released from a hospital. There are new details about the apparent poisoning of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny.

9/16: Hurricane Sally pounds the Gulf with powerful winds and major flooding. Wildfires in the West burn entire neighborhoods. Sep 16, 2020

Hurricane Sally slammed into the Gulf Coast as a Category Two storm, bringing extreme danger to many communities. The wind is a huge concern, but the water is the biggest threat, with forecasters warning of historic floods. In the West, more than 100 wildfires continue to burn. The Bobcat Fire northeast of Los Angeles exploded again yesterday, inching closer to the historic Mount Wilson Observatory. In Oregon, entire communities have been destroyed and at least eight people are dead across the state. President Trump is used to tackling reporters' questions, but last night he faced a new challenge from undecided voters. Democratic nominee Joe Biden traveled to Florida yesterday, holding campaign stops on the first day of Hispanic Heritage Month.
