    Catch my Killer

At any given time in the world, there are thousands of unsolved murders. Most of them will never be solved. The first 48 hours of a homicide are the most crucial to an investigation. Eventually, leads dry up, witnesses become less cooperative, and cases go cold (unsolved). Meanwhile, detectives continue receiving new homicide cases which push older ones to the back. After a case goes cold, it quickly becomes yesterday’s news. The public and the media will forget about the crime and move onto the next crime story.

But do you know who won’t forget about a cold case? The victim’s family and friends. They won’t forget because their case is more than a case file or news story. The victims were sons, fathers, mothers, daughters, or friends. Catch my Killer is a podcast that focuses on the victim’s surviving family and friends who give a voice to those who no longer have one. If you are listening and can help bring a killer to justice, please call in your tips. Even the smallest clue could be large enough to break a case wide open.

Episode 39: Was Army veteran Sgt. Robbie West murdered? Jul 05, 2020
    Show notes

On July 17, 2011 Robbie West was found dead by another soldier named Kenneth Zubic who had called 911. After an investigation by the Phenix City Alabama police department and the Army, Robbie’s death was ruled a suicide. Robbie’s mother and wife both disagreed with the suicide claim. Deanne contacted a program called Crime Watch Daily with Chris Hansen. She asked the program to look into her son’s death. What they found was troubling.
Deanne also received evidence photos through a Freedom of Information Act request. She said there was a lack of blood splatter. Here is a quote from her:
“There was a lack of blood splatter, there was the weapon that was laid in his lap and it was up under a fold of his belly, so how can you shoot yourself in the head, lean over to the right, then the gun fall perfectly under the flap of your belly?”
Do you know what happened to Robby West on July 17, 2011 in Phenix City Alabama? If you know something, about Robbie’s death, please contact Deanne Miller directly through FB at SGT ROBBIE WEST (#justiceforsgtwest) or send your tips through www.themarcabe.com.

Episode 38: Gary Plauche: Hero or Killer? Jun 28, 2020
    Show notes

For this week’s episode I spoke to Jody Plauche, who is the son of the late Leon Gary Plauche who passed away on October 14, 2014. If you aren’t familiar with Gary and Jody’s story, you can easily find details on the Internet. Gary will always be known as a vigilante who killed a man named Jeff Doucet. The shooting was captured on camera by a news television crew and has been viewed over a million times.
On March 16, 1984, police officers were escorting Doucet through the Baton Rouge Metro Airport. He had been arrested for kidnapping and raping Jody Plauche. Gary killed the man who kidnapped and raped his son. Plauche received a seven-year suspended sentence with five years of probation and 300 hours of community service. He received no jail time.
The case received much publicity because people were conflicted over whether Plauche should have been sent to prison. Gary Plauche said anyone in a similar situation would have done the same thing as he did.
Jody has written a book called "Why, Gary, Why?": The Jody Plauché Story, which is available on Amazon and other book retailers. Jody can be reached on FB and other social media outlets. Jody's contact information can be found on his website at: http://www.jodyplauche.net

Episode 37: The mysterious and disturbing death of Danye Jones Jun 21, 2020
    Show notes

For this week’s episode I spoke to Melissa Mckinnies about the October 2018 death of her son Danye Jones in St. Louis, Mo. The day still haunts her. On October 16, 2018, Melissa watched a movie with her son. Then around 9 p.m., she said Danye packed an overnight bag which included his toothbrush. Melissa said Danye was going to meet with an unnamed person. Melissa said he was in good spirits and appeared upbeat.
After Danye left, Melissa went to bed. However, she was awakened by a nightmare. She said something didn’t seem right. Melissa noticed Danye’s light was on in his basement bedroom. She assumed he had returned home and assumed he was up. This was unusual because he turned off his light when he wasn’t home and he said he was staying over with someone. However, Danye wasn’t in his room.
Melissa then saw something strange outside. She went outside to find her son Danye hanging from a tree with his pants pulled down around his ankles. For a brief moment of time, her life just stood still. Her youngest son was hanging from a sheet with balled up fists. After calling the police, they arrived to investigate. Investigators located a chair knocked over near the tree.
Melissa told me authorities immediately ruled Danye’s death a suicide. She believes her son was murdered and the hanging was staged. Melissa also said Danye didn’t know how to tie the knots used in the rope around his neck. She also said the sheet used to hang Danye wasn’t from her home. However, St. Louis County police still claim Danye killed himself. Melissa's family is on a mission to have her son's case changed from suicide to homicide. If you have any information about Danye's death, please call 866-371-TIPS.

Episode 36: Michael Funk was shot to death by police officers: Accidental or intentional? Jun 14, 2020
    Show notes

For this episode, I interviewed an independent film maker named David Starr who is working on a documentary called the 50-million-dollar bullet. David will share a story of a police shooting that will have you shocked and angry. His film tells the story of a Vietnam Veteran named Michael Funk, also known as ML.
Michael survived a military stint in Vietnam only to die at the hands of Neenah Wisconsin police officers Craig Hoffer and Robert Ross. For ML, the day began as any other day. He worked at a motorcycle repair shop called Eagle Nation Cycles in Neenah, Wisconsin with his close friend Steven Erato, who owned the shop.
On December 5, 2015, a man named Brian Flatoff entered the shop and took Ryan Moderson, Mike Petersen and Funk as hostages. Flatoff wanted to steal a motorcycle he once owned from the shop.
During the hostage ordeal, while armed with a handgun he carried for protection, Funk escaped through the backdoor. After escaping, Officers Hoffer and Ross shot Michael Funk dead.
Officers stormed the building and arrested Flatoff, who was eventually prosecuted and sentenced to prison. Afterward, there was an investigation into ML Funk’s shooting.
Former Wisconsin Attorney General Brad Schimel’s office determined officers Craig Hoffer and Robert Ross were justified in killing Funk. He said the officers incorrectly thought Funk was the armed hostage-taker and reacted under the threat of imminent death and therefore "acted in an objectively reasonable manner" in shooting Funk. Schimel called Funk’s death a tragic mistake and that he did nothing to deserve to die.
However, Shop owner Steven Erato claims there is more to this story than meets the eye. Listen as David Starr tells the story of Michael Funk and the unanswered questions about his death. For more information about this upcoming film, you can contact David Starr through his FB page titled The Fifty Million Dollar Bullet.

Episode 35: Did DJ Fickey commit suicide or was he murdered? Jun 07, 2020
    Show notes

For this episode, I spoke to Amanda, about the death of her brother Donald “DJ” Edward Fickey Jr. who was only 27 when he died. On October 3, 2016 in Flintstone, GA. Walker County 911 operators received a frantic call from what is known as a local drug den; the caller stated he needed help because someone had committed suicide. The local sheriff’s office investigated and initially ruled his death a suicide by shotgun, as did the GBI who was also called in to do a limited autopsy.
However, Amanda Shirley, Dj’s Sister and her family believe Dj’s death was a homicide and not a suicide. Amanda said DJ had made plans for the future and had no reason to commit suicide.
During the investigation the caller changed his story multiple times, failed a polygraph test and offered an unbelievable, if not impossible explanation as to how DJ shot himself. According to Amanda, two witnesses watched then entire scene unfold. One was DJ’s wife Brandy. Both witnesses said the man who called 911 shot and killed DJ. Even with witnesses, authorities have not changed DJ’s cause of death or treated DJ’s death as a homicide.
