    Catch my Killer

At any given time in the world, there are thousands of unsolved murders. Most of them will never be solved. The first 48 hours of a homicide are the most crucial to an investigation. Eventually, leads dry up, witnesses become less cooperative, and cases go cold (unsolved). Meanwhile, detectives continue receiving new homicide cases which push older ones to the back. After a case goes cold, it quickly becomes yesterday’s news. The public and the media will forget about the crime and move onto the next crime story.

But do you know who won’t forget about a cold case? The victim’s family and friends. They won’t forget because their case is more than a case file or news story. The victims were sons, fathers, mothers, daughters, or friends. Catch my Killer is a podcast that focuses on the victim’s surviving family and friends who give a voice to those who no longer have one. If you are listening and can help bring a killer to justice, please call in your tips. Even the smallest clue could be large enough to break a case wide open.

Episode 20: The unsolved murder of Mary Jane Reed (Part 1 of 2) Feb 23, 2020
    Show notes

For this episode I spoke to Mike Arians, who was the mayor of Oregon, Illinois from 1999 to 2003. Mike is also the owner of an Illinois restaurant called the Roadhouse which has been featured by various media sources as being haunted. You see, it was formerly known as The Stenhouse, which plays an important part in the murders of Mary Jane Reed and Stanley Skridla.
For many years, Mike Arians and Warren Reed, the younger brother of Mary Jane Reed have tried to find out who killed Mary Jane Reed and Stanley Skridla. The case is currently considered open and has been cold since 1948. There are so many details to this story that I needed to break it up into two parts. Mike Arians also tells a compelling story of murder and ghosts that will shock you.
For many years, it's been rumored that Arian's restaurant is haunted by the spirit of Mary Jane Reed. Some people think her spirit still roams Illinois because no one has ever solved her homicide case. Be sure to listen to the conclusion of this strange homicide case next week. If you have any information about this case, please send tips directly to Mike Arians. You can call or text him at 815 535-7486 or email him at Shayne_West@msn.com. For additional information about the Stenhouse restaurant (currently known as the Roadhouse) or more information about Mary Jane, please visit: www.maryjanereed.com or rhouse.org.

Episode 19: The unsolved murder of professional boxer "Jesse James" Hughes Feb 17, 2020
    Show notes

For this episode I spoke to Mandy, who is knowledgeable about the case of a murdered former professional boxer named James Melvin Hughes. In the boxing world, his nickname was Jesse James who was found dead in July 1995. He was a welterweight with 31 fights. He won 23 of those fights. His last fight was with Nick Rupa, which he won. He seemed destined for greatness. He won 5 of his last 6 fights and had earned the chance for a big payday. Hughes was supposed to fight for the International Boxing Federation championship. The bout would have earned him $300,000.00.
To quote his trainer Jerry Tillman:
"James could have been a world champion," said Jerry Tillman, his trainer. "This kid was tough. He could take a punch, plus he could knock you out with either hand. And when he was training for a fight, he was a fanatic about conditioning. He could go 20 rounds."
A security camera at an automatic teller machine filmed Hughes withdrawing $100 on the last morning he was seen alive. About three hours later, his truck was found by some railroad tracks. Eleven days after that, they found his body submerged in the swamp face down. His watch, wallet and keys were missing. Today, no one knows how Hughes died or what he was doing out in the middle of nowhere where his truck was found.
Note* The opening clip is from WKRG-TV, a CBS-affiliated television station licensed to Mobile, Alabama, and also serving Pensacola, Florida.
