It's not unheard of to get what you think is your dream job and you realize it's not great.

Or worse, you hate it.

If you've been here for a hot minute you know I'm an advocate for people being happy in their jobs and careers.

What to do if you've found yourself in this situation:

Take a deep breath
Try and find the positive
Find the disconnect
Chat with your manager / leader
Figure out if whatever you don't like is permanent or temporary
What enticed you to take the job?
Is there anything that could make you happy with your current situation?
How long has it been?
Soooooo nothing is perfect. Are you being realistic?
Are your expectations realistic?
Is it the job that sucks or the environment?
Do you just need a vacay?

What you can do to possibly avoid this situation in the future:

Be thorough in the interview process
Be honest when you're interviewing
Look at reviews online
Is there anyone in your network that has worked for the organization?
Do a social media search

What To Do When You Have Lost Your Job / Career / Work Passion Dec 12, 2019

We absolutely need to be passionate about something!

Could be in your job, also could be in your personal life.

Something that fuels us.

Sometimes we are going through some hard stuff and work and our passion fizzles out.

That is ok

What we need to evaluate is:

Is this funk or fizzle permanent?
Is it worth riding it out / sticking it out / seeing it through?
Do your have other passions outside of work?

I've had jobs that fizzle from a passion perspective, find other things!

Learning
Getting outside our comfort zone
Exercise
Podcasting
Puppies
Etc etc

There are also times where the passion increases at work so we may have to slow down on passions outside of work.

Tips:

Stay positive
What were you passionate about, if anything?
What are you currently passionate about?
Is there anything from your personal life you can incorporate into work?
Have a transparent conversation with your leader
Stop the grind
What changed?
Are you just bored? Or have you truly lost your passion?
Take your time off, use it, for real!
Make a plan to re-light your fire
Hard question: are you getting in your own way?
Find a coach or mentor

Your job and career won't always make you happy

AND there are pieces we can own

Tips:

Start with knowing what makes you happy
Know that you deserve to have a job that makes you happy
Have transparent conversations with your leader if you have that rapport
Attend conferences, webinars, etc. to learn new things
Push yourself outside of your comfort zone
Do work you're proud of and want to share with others
Do the work you're good at
Strive for some semblance of a balance
Celebrate your wins
Go after what you want
Let your confidence shine
Set boundaries where appropriate
Don't wait until the next thing to find happiness
Get / find the support you need
Align yourself with the culture that you enjoy

What To Do When You Haven’t Adequately Prepared For An Interview Nov 28, 2019

It's probably going to be fine.

However, if it's not, accept that as a lesson learned.

Tips:

Ask good questions
Take 2-3 minutes and read the company's about page
If asked a question you can't answer because you didn't prep, own it
Send a thorough follow up that shows you did your homework after the interview
Stay confident
Be early to your interview
Build rapport with who you are interviewing with
Be genuine and authentic

How To Deal With Constant Change At Work Nov 25, 2019

Constant change is not easy.

Can feel like a rollercoaster ride.

Sometimes we will feel like we want to tap out and get off the ride.

I get it!!

Change can come in many ways:

Corporate transformations
Acquisitions
Mergers
Re-structure
Re-org
Layoffs
Hiring freezes
New leadership
Pay increase freezes
Opening and closing offices
Hyper growth
Lack of structures / systems

Tips:

Deep breath
Re-focus
Set up ways to remind yourself of #2
Try to understand why all the changes are happening
Make your skillset known
Stay the course
Offer to help
Be genuine and authentic
Pause, slow down, reflect
Evaluate - with all the changes, is this still a good fit for you?
Keep positive / upbeat / optimistic
Take the opportunity to learn new things
Determine if you want to or need to set up new goals / change course
Talk through and resolve any issues or struggles
Understand if what you are measured on, your KPIs, are changing or staying the same
Recognize when you've hit your max - take a break
Prepare for what you can

Things to know:

Change is the only constant
Change can lead to amazing things

Been there. There was a guy who made more than me, which made it feel worse.

Tips:

Take a deep breath
Decide, we have 3 options
1. Leave it alone
2. Ask for more
3. Leave for a better paying job
Do your research
Create a plan to stay engaged and motivated
Figure out if you want to approach your boss or your HR team
Decide what range you'll be happy with
Take time to feel the feels

During your conversations:

Focus on you, your qualifications and what you bring to the table
Keep it positive and upbeat
Know your stuff
Be confident

Don't: bring up specifics about your colleagues

What you need to know:

You are amazing
You deserve to be compensated fairly
You are worth it
