Help! I’m Friends / Enemies With The Wrong People At Work Mar 23, 2020
    Show notes

Either situation can be super hard and tricky.

Who we associate with (inside and outside of work) will impact us as humans. Our attitude, our personality, our actions, our work, etc.

Jim Rohn has the famous quote, "you are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with"

    Friends with the wrong people:

    1. Create some distance
    2. Start talking to some new people at work
    3. No thank you
    4. Rock those headphones
    5. Change up lunch habits
    6. Alone time
    7. Reserve a space to get out of a shared space for a couple hours
    8. If they aren't getting it, explain you have some big personal goals you're working towards and really want to put major focus on work
    9. Stay kind, cordial and nice

    Enemies with the wrong people:

    1. Why? No reason, ok KAREN
    2. Do you need to apologies for something?
    3. Work hard, let your results shine and contribute
    4. Be kind and nice
    5. Invite that person to lunch or coffee
    6. Ask the right people for advice, in a professional tactful way
    7. Time will squash most things
    8. Try their suggestions / ideas / thoughts
    9. Don't retaliate or react at all
    10. Do the right thing for your customers
    11. Ask them how they are doing

    Notes:

    • Actions speak louder than words
    • Be the bigger person / take the high road
    • You are responsible for you
    • Your reputation will be impacted on how you respond to someone's stuff

    Show notes

You're interviewing, things are going well, you're getting excited. It's a great company, it's a great team. Everything looks good, everything sounds good. You get an offer.

BEFORE taking a second to think about it, you say yes, sign, start your background check and are off to the races!!

NOT a bad thing AT ALL if you did your due diligence.

If you did that, amazing! Congratulations!!

If you didn't thats ok too!

If you haven't started yet, ask to talk to your future manager to get some questions answered. If they are benefits related HR / recruiting might be the best contact.

If you have started you can still ask your questions, good opportunity would be in your 1:1 with your manager.

    Due diligence points:

    1. Culture fit
    2. Mission of company
    3. Team goals
    4. Individual goals
    5. Team member
    6. How does your group work together
    7. Typical day / week / year
    8. What's your impact
    9. Leadership style
    10. Biggest challenges to you when you first start
    11. Projects
    12. Growth opportunities
    13. Where did the person go who had the job before you
    14. Does the role align to your passion / purpose
    15. Internet research

How To Help With Your Partners Involuntary Career Change Mar 16, 2020
    Show notes

There are a couple reasons someone could have an involuntary career change.

To clarify the situation we are talking about:

1 - Career change (moving from HR to IT for example)

2 - Job change (moving from IT developer at one company to being a IT developer at another company)

    We are talking about #1

    Reasons this could happen:

    1. Acquisition - new company comes in, moves people around
    2. Layoff
    3. Partner goes to a new job, changes once they start
    4. Re-organization
    5. Transformation

    Things to consider:

    • Possible heightened stress, learning new things
    • More than likely higher workload up front, learning new things
    • Super excited
    • Looking for support more than likely
    • Could be unhappy

Questions to ask yourself / your person:

    1. How am I / you doing?
    2. Challenges?
    3. Like?
    4. Dislike?
    5. How does this new job / career make you feel?
    6. Are you satisfied with your new role?
    7. Are you being challenged enough?
    8. What impact are you / I having?
    9. Do you feel fulfilled?
    10. How is the company culture? Has it changed? How is it aligning to you?
    11. Has your manager changed? How is that new relationship?
    12. What are some potential job opportunities?

What To Do When Your College Degree Isn't Enough Mar 09, 2020
    Show notes

You have a degree, recently graduated and you're struggling to find a job. I hear you!

A lot of companies want someone with experience even for the entry level jobs.

    Tips:

    1. Ensure you're looking for entry level jobs
    2. Don't NOT apply for roles because they want 1 year of experience
    3. List your education towards the top of your resume with graduation year
    4. Must include all working experience
    5. Always include internships
    6. Create a 'school projects' section on your resume
    7. Sharpen your interview skills
    8. Be open to taking an unideal role if it can lead to a role you want in 1-2 years
    9. Work study programs included on your resume
    10. Try gaining experience through 'gigs'
    11. Work a sucky job if you have bills to pay until you land the job that will start your career
    12. Network
    13. Reach out to potential H.M.'s and ask them for their advice
    14. Get support system for recent college grads

Jack Of All Trades, Master of None Mar 02, 2020
    Show notes

Being a jack of all trades can be a great thing!

    Ask yourself:

    1. Do you like being more of a generalist?
    2. Do you feel you are lacking something?
    3. Is there something you'd like to learn?
    4. Are you an expert in your core field without specializing?

    Pros of being a generalist:

    1. Can work on a variety of projects
    2. Know a little about a lot
    3. Get to encounter and solve all types of issues / problems
    4. Will likely stay challenged
    5. Combined expertise / experiences
    6. Could help clarify what you love to do
    7. Great foundation
    8. Quickly and more efficiently hit the ground running
    9. Project lead / leading specialists

    Cons of being a generalist:

    1. Narrow but deep knowledge
    2. What you specialize in could become less valuable in the workplace
    3. Take time to learn new skills
    4. Could narrow earning potential
    5. Won't be able to go toe to toe in conversations with expert specialists

    Final thoughts:

    • Can flip between them throughout your career
    • Explore opportunities as it makes sense
    • Don't feel pressured to go down a path you don't want to go down
