Himmy Butler set to Battle MPJ in the Finals! (Jokic too) May 24, 2023

Show notes

It finally happened. MPJ has carried the Denver Nuggets to the NBA Finals just as Tyler said he would for the past 3 years :)

Denver appears to be on a collision course to meet up with the MIAMI HEAT, who at the time of this recording hold a commanding 3-0 lead on Ryan's Celtics. Is Himmy Butler the most underrated player ever?

Also, Fanatics acquired PWCC this week... what does that mean for the hobby? Ryan attended the Panini Rookie Premier in Los Angeles and noticed something interesting out there that might not be so great for the hobby. The entire team places an absurd bet that is basically a donation to our favorite sports book.

Over/Under is BACK! Play of the Week is BACK!

Tune in for all of that PLUS some more great Instagram Q&A from our followers!

Conference Finals SZN + Wembanyama Time! May 17, 2023

Show notes

The NBA and NHL playoffs have now entered the Conference Finals. What do we know?

1. The Knicks and Devils are out. It was a good week for the Reverse ParJay.

2. Connor McDavid will again not be competing for a Stanley Cup.

3. The Celtics dominated game 7 against Philly, with Jayson Tatum putting up an all-time performance.

4. Himmy Buckets is that guy.

5. LeBron vs Jokic is going to be one hell of a series.

Also, the NBA Draft Lottery will have happened by the time this episode comes out... but how good is Victor Wembanyama going to be and will he completely turn the franchise lucky enough to land him around? Ja Morant appeared to have ANOTHER gun on Instagram live. Will he get a long suspension and what sort of impact will this all have on his cards?

There was some huge news this week from the auction houses, as the Michael Jordan game worn flu game sneakers already has an $800k bid with 30 days to go, while a PSA 8.5 Bill Russell rookie card just sold for $660k.

The NFL plans on streaming a playoff game on Peacock this year, Flawless Basketball is set to release this week with some new Logomans (Logomen?) to chase, the National countdown is back, and Victor Wembanyama showed off an inscription "the first card I ever signed" on Michael Rubin's Twitter.

Tune in for all of that PLUS some more great Instagram Q&A from our followers!

Bronny to USC, LeBron Beating Steph & Bedard to Chicago May 10, 2023

Show notes

This is one of the greatest times of the year in sports.

The NHL and NBA Playoffs are approaching the conference championship rounds. In basketball, the Knicks fading, the Lakers are rising and the winner of the Nuggets vs Suns series appearing to be on target to win it all.

On the ice, the Oilers and Connor McDavid are playing their hearts out for their #1 day 1 fan, Ryan Johnson, the Devils are trying to fight back from another 2-0 deficit and the Panthers are making light work of Toronto.

Also, Bronny James announced his plans to attend USC, Evan Mathis is trimming cards and posting it for all to see, Fanatics Live launched their social media accounts this week, Bowman Inception University gets set to release with some VERY interesting autos including Victor Wembanyama and Caitlin Clark, and Connor Bedard is headed to Chicago (home of the 2023 National).

Three QB's in the top 4 picks + Never Bet the Reverse ParJay May 03, 2023

Show notes

They said the "reverse parJay" was the play. Rangers and Cavs, they said.

O for 2. Hate to see it.

The boys are back in studio talking all things NFL Draft! How will three qb's in the top 4 picks effect the card market? Will 2023 product be one of the hottest ever? Who are the underrated and overrated picks to come out in this class?

Also, the NBA playoffs 2nd round kicked off with the Knicks and Heat revisiting their old rivalry... Dillon Brooks took a big L against LeBron after talking all that nonsense... and now the Lakers have a matchup for the ages against Steph and the Warriors. Tyler's Nuggets are locked in and the Celts lost to an Embiid-less 76ers squad last night.

In the NHL, the Jay's Devils predictably took down Tyler's Rangers in game 7, advancing to play the team that knocked out Lou's Islanders (Carolina).. and Ryan's Oilers also moved on in the Western Conference. Some might say that an Oilers vs Devils Stanley Cup finals is looming - with Jack Hughes and Connor McDavid taking center stage.

Erling Haaland is on fire, Giannis lost but it wasn't a failure... the Mavs should take note of what the Heat are doing and actually try to make the playoffs next time.... and finally Netflix released "Goldin Touch: King of Collectibles" and it was a really fun watch.

Tune in for all of that plus some more great Instagram Q&A... and then we are BACK with another fantastic Play of the Week!

Aaron Rodgers + the Playoffs are Heating Up! Apr 26, 2023

Show notes

Aaron Rodgers is the new QB1 of the New York Jets. I'm gonna type it again just because it makes me (Jay), Lou and Tyler so happy.

Aaron Rodgers is the new QB1 of the New York Jets!!!

If you think we aren't discussing that at length this week, you clearly haven't been watching the first 3+ years of Card Talk.

But that's not the only story in sports this week! The NFL draft is on Thursday and the boys are fired up! The NBA Playoffs are in full swing with the Knicks dominating the Cavs (so far), MPJ looking like the stud Tyler has been propping up since day 1, and Himmy Butler doing some real damage to the Bucks.

Also, the NHL playoffs has been a lot of fun with the Rangers getting off to a 2-0 lead on the road, only to come home to MSG and lose games 3 and 4. Can they rebound in time to save their season? Can the Oilers and Connor McDavid advance to the second round?

There was quite a bit of controversy with Bleacher Breaks over on Whatnot, and some theft right off the printing line of Pokemon hits. The Erling Haaland 2019 Sapphire 1/1 was pulled... Topps announced a triple auto of Messi, Neymar & Mbappe in an upcoming PSG set... the Rock 1/1 from 2022 Prizm sold at PWCC for $126K!

If that list of topics isn't enough...we even took 7 questions from Instagram. The show was so packed, we didn't even get to Play of the Week... so submit your plays for next week!!!

Playoff Basketball & Hockey + Crazy Autos Apr 19, 2023

Show notes

First we have Prizm Monopoly cards doing some serious numbers on eBay... is this a viable long term play? Derek Carr signed an Immaculate shield 1/1 Justin Herbert card talking trash... did that actually increase the value of the card? Leaf released 300 Pete Weber "Who do you think you are? I am!" autos.. but sold 400... but did they come out of that mistake looking good with the way they handled it? The boys chime in with their thoughts on all of these topics.

Also, the NBA and NHL kicked off their playoff season and it's out to a FLYING start. The Knicks have a 1-0 lead on that team from Ohio... and the Devils and Rangers are set to kick their series off in a battle of Lou, Jay & Tyler's home state (sad that only one of those three is honorable enough to root for the NJ team... and Jay would never point that out in the third person just because he's the one writing this).

Anthony Bass took an L for complaining about his kids cleaning up popcorn, golf is for sure heating up, we took a ton of questions from our followers including such gems as "how much gel does Ryan put in his hair on an average day" and "are presidential hopeful rookie cards a play".

Tune in for all of that PLUS a top tier Play of the Week!

Masters Recap & Basketball Playoff Predictions Apr 12, 2023

Show notes

Tyler's favorite event has come and gone like Christmas morning... but what a few days at Augusta! John Rahm proved again that he's currently the best player on the planet, but there were a ton of other storylines including Phil Mickelson and the rest of the LIV players mixing it up with the stars of the PGA for a weekend. Golden Age closed their Masters themed auction over the weekend as well, and there were some eye-popping sales. Check out some of the items that sold!

Also, the NBA regular season has come to an end and the play-in tournament is set to kick off, so the boys lined up their playoff predictions. Has Tyler finally given up on MPJ? Well......

Lou asks which basketball player will see the biggest rise in value during the run to the finals. The answers might surprise you! Michael Rubin gave a first look at the new Fanatics trading card office. We took a bunch of questions from Instagram and as usual, we had another fun Play of the Week.

Tune in for all of that AND MORE!

Show notes

Beckett announced a new grading scale, then pulled back on it and announced things would be staying the same... sort of. It's Masters week - who do the boys think will be wearing the Green Jacket?

All of that PLUS Courtney is back for another Over/Under segment and SOMEBODY from CC2 might be in a bit of trouble after Play of the Week showed up in their value box!!
