Almost anything aviation related has its share of noise hazards. Some occupations have nothing but noise hazards. These occupations would most assuredly have signs, posters, and other forms of media that advise you to preserve your sense of hearing and wear appropriate protective equipment. Do we actually use them? Every shop has those individuals who scoff at the notion due to their already lacking sense of hearing. Did you know that hearing loss can tie into other parts of your body and manifest itself into other physiological issues? How much is your hearing (or health in general) worth?

Vacation to the vacation Aug 06, 2021
    Show notes

We all work hard to earn our time off, often at the expense of ourselves. "Work hard, play hard" is the typical saying when referring to activities outside of our day-to-day grind. Vacations are the go-to cure for work burnout, or at least be the relief for it, but have you ever had vacations where it felt like it was just as much work if not more than your regular job? How about being wrapped up in the planning and doing phases of vacation that you don't actually enjoy yourself? Was it the extra work involved when brining along kids? family members? Perhaps you can't really relax due to always being on the go? Whatever the case may be, nothing hits harder than the slow trudge back to reality once your vacation is over. When that happens, we'd often feel like we need a vacation after having a vacation.

Hurry Up and Wait Jul 30, 2021
    Show notes

When there’s work to be done, the job can consume you. Sometimes however, we find ourselves rushing to the stop sign. When these uncommon but inevitable moments occur, the demand for superfluous tasks begin to rise. In times of too much "white space", you would think some refresher training or practical applications would be ideal. That may be the case on some occasions, however more often than you would think, these moments of free time is spent doing menial tasks that "had to be done" or just a way to keep you busy. Others see this time as a way to express their "creativity" by coming up with ways to relieve the boredom. You can't expect too many good things when skilled individuals are left with nothing to do.

What's your go-to ritual or practice before a major event? Pre-game puke? Nice cup of coffee? How about a good stretch and jamming out to your favorite tunes (or podcast)? Whatever form it takes, we have those habits that help ready us for the oncoming venture. Some habits are positive and empower us to brave the storm, giving us some sense of courage and invulnerability. Other habits are negative and perpetuate a shitty situation, no matter the size of impact it really is. On this episode, we discuss some of our "pre-game" rituals, both good and bad, that helps us take on whatever fresh hell is thrown our way.

    Who's Driving This Bitch?! Jul 16, 2021
    Show notes

They go by many names; maintenance controller, pro super, production controller, operations/project planner, maintenance coordinator, production planner; but one title they all share is "cat herder". Maintenance control is widely considered the operations and information hub of the aviation world. This hub acts as the brain of an aviation organization which includes such functions as gathering and processing data, creating operations plans, and implementing solutions. Controllers are often seen as the enemy of both the maintenance shops due to their perceived overbearing pursuit of fulfilling operations schedules. Likewise they are seen as the bane of management for their lack of willful, blind obedience to "big picture" plans, or the non-tyrannical push to fulfill priorities. The fast paced, anxiety inducing environment that is maintenance control requires a sharp mind and a great amount of communication to turn abstract into reality, especially in the event of an emergency. Flight operations success hinges on the ability of maintenance control. On a good day it is organized chaos, on rough and stressful days, it is virtually like herding cats.

Turn and Face the Strange Jul 09, 2021
    Show notes

At some point in your career, you will find reasons to be unfulfilled or unsatisfied. This can come in many forms such as commute time is no longer feasible, family time is becoming too scarce, an abundance of burnout days, and so forth. The thought of moving on to something else or something better becomes stronger as the moments pass by. We sometimes accept these feelings as overthinking or over "feeling" our current position. Maybe it's just a string of bad days, maybe you're just not utilizing your time efficiently, or maybe it's some other underlying condition. This hesitance and the anxiety of venturing to something new is what deters us from transitioning. In the end however, it is all what is best for you and maybe transitioning into the unfamiliar is exactly what you need. What should you do to prepare? Are you prepared enough? When should you call it quits and is it ever ok to burn bridges?

Blame and Train Jun 25, 2021
    Show notes

Typically when mistakes happen, it's either due to lack of knowledge or lack of care. The go-to solution to fix these instances is "refresher" training to a) reiterate/bridge the gap in the lack of knowledge or b) to re-emphasize the gravity of a task or outcome. Refresher training can take many forms from a verbal one-to-one counseling, read-and-sign computer based classes, to formal classroom training (which sometimes involves negative paperwork). Refresher training's effectiveness hinges on its delivery and acceptance however. With that said, most individuals with positions of authority consider this as a check in the box and uses this as a leverage tool to blame the individual for any future mistakes regardless if the training was adequate or if the individual fully understood the task he/she was being trained to. This turns into an endless loop of blaming, training, and patching the symptom without properly diagnosing the cause.

Every Time is Our First Time Jun 18, 2021

Executing a new plan or performing a new procedure can be a very confusing time. The learning curve can sometimes be 90 degrees with little wiggle room for error. What happens when the lessons learned from those experiences don't get passed along? How do you break the endless loop of discovery and trial and error? How do we ensure the ones after us aren't doomed to repeat the same mistakes and live up to the definition of insanity?

Work Stereotypes (feat. Dick Talk & Mimosas) Jun 11, 2021
    Show notes

Whether you acknowledge it or not, every work place has a stereotype in regards to gender, sexual orientation & identification, and culture. The age old stigma of "men tend the fields and women tend the house" is alive and well even to this day. It's almost understood as going against the grain if men were to do jobs such as nursing or baking, likewise if women are mechanics or join the military. We are joined once again with Ana, Jennifer, and Amanda, the hosts of the Dick Talk & Mimosas podcast to discuss some of the assumptions of gender and sexual orientation/identification in the workplace and why it continues to persist.

Dick Talk & Mimosas is a podcast where these lovely ladies talk about everything from felines to fetishes, all over mimosas!
