    Canadian Club of Toronto

    The Canadian Club of Toronto is Canada’s preeminent public affairs podium. Since 1897, we have served an ambitious and important mission: to connect Canadians with world-class leaders and newsmakers and be a leading platform for influencers to engage Canadians on what matters most.

    Over our 125 year history as a not-for-profit organization, we continue to be a forum for Governors General and Prime Ministers, CEOs and Nobel laureates, scientists, artists and innovators. We have a proud tradition of hosting national and international leaders in politics, business, social innovation and the media, and our members and audiences are drawn from an equally diverse and distinguished group of leaders.

    The Canadian Club addresses routinely generate national coverage across multiple platforms. In addition to reported media coverage and our in-person audience of several hundred people, we make our programming accessible to all Canadians through broadcasts on cable television and webcasts, available online.

    Events run between September and June in downtown Toronto. As an independent, non-profit organization, we make all our events open to the public. Tickets can be purchased online or through our office at 416-364-5590.

As a leading advocate for sustainable business, Mr. McCain will discuss the critical importance for Canadian and global industries to set a high bar in making and advancing sustainability commitments. He will discuss the dangers of disconnecting climate policy from science, the perils of “greenwashing” and the unintended consequences of “greenhushing” in shutting down discretionary climate action. He will address his deep concerns about Bill C-59 and its potential disastrous impacts on Canada’s climate goals, particularly in the food and agriculture sectors. This is a unique opportunity to hear firsthand insights from the Minister as he outlines the province’s fiscal strategies and priorities ahead of the Fall Economic Statement. With a proven track record of leadership in navigating Ontario through economic challenges, Minister Bethlenfalvy will provide key updates on the province’s economic outlook, budgetary priorities, and plans for sustaining growth into 2025 and beyond. Minister Bethlenfalvy will be joined in conversation by The Honourable John Baird. The Honourable Peter Bethlenfalvy Ontario’s Minister of Finance Peter Bethlenfalvy is Ontario’s Minister of Finance. He was elected as MPP for Pickering—Uxbridge in 2018 and was re-elected in 2022. As Minister of Finance, he is responsible for the management of the province’s finances and building the environment for long-term economic prosperity. Minister Bethlenfalvy continues to deliver on the government’s plan to build a Strong Ontario with the supports necessary for people and businesses today, while laying a strong fiscal foundation for future generations. With Premier Ford, he is working to Get It Done and build the housing and critical infrastructure needed for Ontario’s growing population and economy. Prior to entering public service, Minister Bethlenfalvy served in senior leadership roles for several financial institutions including as President and Chief Operating Officer of TD Securities (USA) and Co-President of DBRS. He has served on the Board of Directors for many charitable organizations. In 2014, he joined the True Patriot Love Expedition to the magnetic North Pole in support of Canadian military families. He holds both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Business Administration from McGill University which included a year at the HEC School of Management, Paris, and a Master of Arts in Political Science from the University of Toronto. The Honourable John Baird Senior Advisor, Bennett Jones LLP John Baird is a Senior Advisor at Bennett Jones LLP and a former Senior Cabinet Minister in the Government of Canada. An instrumental figure in bilateral trade and investment relationships, Mr. Baird has played a leading role in the Canada-China dialogue and worked to build ties with ASEAN countries. In addition, Mr. Baird has worked closely with international leaders to strengthen security and economic ties with the United States and Middle Eastern countries. A native of Ottawa, Baird spent three terms as a Member of Parliament and four years as Foreign Minister. He also served as President of the Treasury Board, Minister of the Environment, Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, and Leader of the Government in the House of Commons. In 2010, he was selected by Members of Parliament from all parties as Parliamentarian of the Year. Prior to entering federal politics, Mr. Baird spent ten years in the Ontario Legislature where he served as Minister of Community and Social Services, Minister of Energy, and Government House Leader. In addition to his work with Bennett Jones, Mr. Baird sits on the advisory board of Barrick Gold Corp., the corporate boards of Canadian Pacific Kansas City Limited (CPKC), Canfor Corporation (as Chair), the FWD Group and PineBridge Investments. He also serves as a Senior Advisor at Eurasia Group, a global political risk consultancy. Mr. Baird also volunteers his time with Community Living Ontario, an organization that supports individuals with developmental disabilities, and is a board member of the Friends of Israel Initiative. He holds an Honours Bachelor of Arts in Political Studies and an Honourary Doctorate of Law from Queen’s University at Kingston.

    More than 114 million individuals have been forcibly displaced worldwide as a result of persecution, conflict, violence, human rights violations and climate disasters. Queer and trans refugees are uniquely vulnerable due to state-sponsored homophobia and transphobia. More than 60 countries criminalize same-sex intimacy, and 14 specifically criminalize trans people for their gender identities and expressions.
