    Canadian Club of Toronto

    The Canadian Club of Toronto is Canada’s preeminent public affairs podium. Since 1897, we have served an ambitious and important mission: to connect Canadians with world-class leaders and newsmakers and be a leading platform for influencers to engage Canadians on what matters most.

    Over our 125 year history as a not-for-profit organization, we continue to be a forum for Governors General and Prime Ministers, CEOs and Nobel laureates, scientists, artists and innovators. We have a proud tradition of hosting national and international leaders in politics, business, social innovation and the media, and our members and audiences are drawn from an equally diverse and distinguished group of leaders.

    The Canadian Club addresses routinely generate national coverage across multiple platforms. In addition to reported media coverage and our in-person audience of several hundred people, we make our programming accessible to all Canadians through broadcasts on cable television and webcasts, available online.

    Events run between September and June in downtown Toronto. As an independent, non-profit organization, we make all our events open to the public. Tickets can be purchased online or through our office at 416-364-5590.

    Join us for a luncheon on June 1st as Evan Siddall, President and CEO of Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, speaks about the idea that affordable housing is essential to a growing economy and to a healthy society. After a year of broad consultations, the Government of Canada has asked CMHC to lead the development of a National Housing Strategy, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to ensure Canadians have the housing they need and that they can afford. ­ Evan Siddall was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation in January 2014. As CEO, Mr. Siddall works with his colleagues to help Canadians meet their housing needs. CMHC’s mission includes promoting housing access and affordability as well as financial stability. Prior to joining CMHC, Mr. Siddall served as Special Advisor to the Governor of the Bank of Canada and the Bank’s Senior Representative to Toronto, where he led projects designed to promote continuous financial markets and the stability of the Canadian financial system. Before entering public service, Mr. Siddall held a variety of positions in both investment banking and general management, including at BMO Nesbitt Burns, Goldman Sachs & Co., Lazard Frères & Co. and Irving Oil Ltd. Mr. Siddall received an L.L.B from Osgoode Hall Law School, York University, a B.A. in Management Economics from the University of Guelph and attends the YPO Presidents’ University at Harvard Business School. He has also served as Chair of the Board of Governors of the University of Guelph, on the boards of the Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery, the Ontario chapter of the Young Presidents Organization and of the Canadian Stage Company, and as Chair of the Council of Chairs of Ontario Universities.

    Join us on May 24th in a discussion with National Chief Perry Bellegarde and Duncan McCue, as they discuss reconciliation and what needs to change for First Nations in Canada, and how that is good for everyone. Chief Perry Bellegarde In 2014, Perry Bellegarde was elected National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations following a long career championing the rights of First Nations. Originally from Little Black Bear First Nation in Treaty 4 Territory, National Chief Bellegarde has held the roles of Councillor, Chief, Tribal Chair, and Chief of the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations and AFN Regional Chief for Saskatchewan. National Chief Bellegarde is the recipient of the Queen’s Jubilee Medal (2012), the Saskatchewan Medal (2005), the Queen’s Jubilee Medal (2002) and the Confederation Medal (1992). He has been honoured by several Chiefs and Elders who have acknowledged him as their adopted son, and he honours them by carrying their teachings forward as he works toward the full realization of self-determination for First Nations people and a shared, nation-to-nation vision of a more just and inclusive Canada. Duncan McCue Award-winning journalist Duncan McCue is the host of CBC Radio OneCross Country Checkup. McCue was a reporter for CBC News in Vancouver for over 15 years. Now based in Toronto, his news and current affairs pieces continue to be featured on CBC’s flagship news show,The National. McCue’s work has garnered several RTNDA and Jack Webster Awards. He was part of a CBC Aboriginal investigation into missing and murdered Indigenous women that won numerous honours including the Hillman Award for Investigative Journalism. McCue has spent years teaching journalism at the UBC Graduate School of Journalism and was recognized by the Canadian Ethnic Media Association with an Innovation Award for developing curriculum on Indigenous issues. He’s also an author: his bookThe Shoe Boy: A Trapline Memoir recounts a season he spent in a hunting camp with a Cree family in northern Quebec as a teenager. He was awarded a Knight Fellowship at Stanford University in 2011, where he created an online guide for journalists called Reporting in Indigenous Communities (riic.ca). Before becoming a journalist, McCue studied English at the University of King’s College, then Law at UBC. He was called to the bar in British Columbia in 1998. McCue is Anishinaabe, a member of the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation in southern Ontario, and proud father of two children.

    As part of our Global Leaders Series, Prem Watsa will share his insights on what it means to be a successful business leader in Canada and how he has led Fairfax to become a top global business. He will also speak about entrepreneurial culture and growth opportunities in Canada. Prem Watsa is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited, a holding company which, through its subsidiaries, is engaged in property and casualty insurance and reinsurance and investment management. In 1985 Prem took control of Markel Financial which was controlled by the Virginia based Markel family. In 1987 he then re‐organized and renamed it Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited. He has served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officersince its inception. Since 1985, Fairfax has compounded book value and stock price by about 19%. Fairfax has total assets of approximately US$43 billion, revenues of approximately US$9 billion and common shareholders’ equity of approximately US$9 billion. The company is listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange. He holds a Bachelors Degree in Chemical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology in Madras, India and obtained his MBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario. He is also a Chartered Financial Analyst. He holds an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from the University of Western Ontario, an Honorary Doctorate of Sacred Letters from Wycliff College of the University of Toronto and an Honorary Doctorate of Divinity from Tyndale College. He is a member of the Sick Children’s Hospital Foundation and is Chairman of their Investment Committee, member of the Advisory Board for the Richard Ivey School of Business, member of the Board of Directors of the Royal Ontario Museum Foundation, Lead Director on the Board of Blackberry and Chairman of the Investment Committee of St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Toronto. He is on the Board of Horatio Alger Association U.S. and President of Horatio Alger Association of Canada. He is Chairman of Fairfax India. He was formerly Chancellor of the University of Waterloo and on the Boards of the Bank of Ireland and of ICICI Bank.He is a recipient of the Order of Canada.

    Join us for lunch on May 17th as Ontario PC Leader Patrick Brown speaks about the unaffordability crisis that businesses and families alike are facing in Ontario. He will share his plan to help ensure Ontarians are paying less and getting ahead. Leader of the Official Opposition, Ontario Leader of the PC Party of Ontario MPP, Simcoe North Patrick Brown was elected Leader of the Ontario PC Party in May, 2015 and MPP for Simcoe North a few months later in September, 2015. He began his public service career when he was elected at the age of 22 to Barrie City Council while still a student. Patrick stepped into federal politics in 2004, running for the newly formed Conservative Party of Canada in Barrie. He lost that year, but ran again in 2006 and defeated a cabinet minister to become MP for Barrie. Patrick served as MP for nine years until stepping down after winning the Ontario PC Leadership. Patrick works tirelessly to listen to and build strong partnerships with individuals, groups, first responders, members of the business community, governments and organizations – both at home and abroad – establishing connections that enable him to better serve his constituents and to serve the people of Ontario as Leader of the Official Opposition. An alumni of St. Michael’s College School in Toronto, Patrick studied political science at the University of Toronto before earning his LL.B from the University of Windsor. Patrick also attended l’Université du Québec à Trois Rivières for extensive French studies. Patrick is an avid hockey, tennis player and accomplished marathon runner. He has helped to raise nearly $2 million dollars for the Royal Victoria Hospital in Barrie and other charities, including JDRF, Autism Ontario, ALS Canada, Busby Street Centre, Talk is Free Theatre, and The Bill Wilkins Scholarship.
