    Canadian Club of Toronto

The Canadian Club of Toronto is Canada’s preeminent public affairs podium. Since 1897, we have served an ambitious and important mission: to connect Canadians with world-class leaders and newsmakers and be a leading platform for influencers to engage Canadians on what matters most.

Over our 125 year history as a not-for-profit organization, we continue to be a forum for Governors General and Prime Ministers, CEOs and Nobel laureates, scientists, artists and innovators. We have a proud tradition of hosting national and international leaders in politics, business, social innovation and the media, and our members and audiences are drawn from an equally diverse and distinguished group of leaders.

The Canadian Club addresses routinely generate national coverage across multiple platforms. In addition to reported media coverage and our in-person audience of several hundred people, we make our programming accessible to all Canadians through broadcasts on cable television and webcasts, available online.

Events run between September and June in downtown Toronto. As an independent, non-profit organization, we make all our events open to the public. Tickets can be purchased online or through our office at 416-364-5590.

Happiness in Times of Crisis Apr 02, 2020
    Show notes

Mental Health was a key focus for Canadian organizations before COVID-19 hit. Now, new challenges have emerged: those with pre-existing mental health issues may be separated from their support system and in circumstances that make symptoms more acute. Those without prior issues may be experiencing anxiety and depression for the first time. Using the word “Happiness” is a bold move — is happiness even possible during times like these? This event will address that question and many others. Canadian Club Toronto is bringing together a variety of mental health and happiness experts to discuss what people are dealing with right now, and what can be done to provide employees with support, resources and maybe even a smile. This expert panel will be moderated by Bruce Sellery, Business Journalist and President of Canadian Club Toronto, and will feature: Paula Allen – Senior Vice-President, Research, Analytics and Innovation, Morneau Shepell Dr. Donna Ferguson, Clinical Psychologist (ABPP), CAMH Jessica Holmes – Comedian & Author, “Depression: A Comedy” Neil Pasricha – Author, “The Happiness Equation” and “You Are Awesome”

Given this pandemic, we are gathering the panel again for a free, live, virtual discussion on the economy, the markets and the political issues that will affect Canadians in the year ahead. The Honourable Christine Elliott Mar 05, 2020
    Show notes

Every year, more than one million Ontarians experience a mental health or addiction issue, leading to serious impacts on their quality of life and contributing to clear consequences for the province’s economic productivity. Currently, services are fragmented throughout the system with significant barriers to access and inconsistent quality, leading to people often turning to emergency departments—in many cases, only after reaching a crisis point. All told, there’s a clear and urgent case for action. Join Canadian Club Toronto on March 5 when Christine Elliott, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health, discusses Ontario’s new plan to build a comprehensive and connected mental health and addictions system and its significance to the province’s extensive efforts to end hallway health care. Following her remarks, Minister Elliott will be joined in conversation with Jane Taber (NATIONAL Public Relations). Christine Elliott, MPP for Newmarket—Aurora, currently serves as Ontario’s Deputy Premier and Minister of Health. As a mother, lawyer, businesswoman and entrepreneur, Christine has a proven track record of bringing people together to build stronger and more inclusive communities. Christine graduated from the University of Western Ontario with a Bachelor of Laws degree. She then built a successful career in business and law, working first as an auditor at one of Canada’s largest banks. Christine later co-founded a law firm with her late husband, Jim Flaherty, where she specialized in real estate, corporate and estate law. Christine used her business and legal expertise to pursue her commitment to public service. Her pro bono legal work for charitable organizations gained her the recognition as a Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow, the highest award with Rotary. Christine is a co-founder of the Abilities Centre in Whitby, a facility built with the vision of celebrating all people, regardless of ability. The centre has become a leading community hub, hosting various Parapan Am Games events in 2015. In 2016, Christine became Ontario’s first Patient Ombudsman, where she fought for better access to health care for all. Christine has triplet sons, John, Galen and Quinn.
