    Canadian Club of Toronto

    The Canadian Club of Toronto is Canada’s preeminent public affairs podium. Since 1897, we have served an ambitious and important mission: to connect Canadians with world-class leaders and newsmakers and be a leading platform for influencers to engage Canadians on what matters most.

    Over our 125 year history as a not-for-profit organization, we continue to be a forum for Governors General and Prime Ministers, CEOs and Nobel laureates, scientists, artists and innovators. We have a proud tradition of hosting national and international leaders in politics, business, social innovation and the media, and our members and audiences are drawn from an equally diverse and distinguished group of leaders.

    The Canadian Club addresses routinely generate national coverage across multiple platforms. In addition to reported media coverage and our in-person audience of several hundred people, we make our programming accessible to all Canadians through broadcasts on cable television and webcasts, available online.

    Events run between September and June in downtown Toronto. As an independent, non-profit organization, we make all our events open to the public. Tickets can be purchased online or through our office at 416-364-5590.

    2023 marks the 125th anniversary of the Yukon joining Confederation. Join Canadian Club Toronto on May 2 when The Honourable Ranj Pillai, Premier of the Yukon, joins us to discuss the economic future of the territory and his long-term vision for prosperity in the North. The Premier will examine the Yukon’s place in the world, Arctic security, the territory’s nation-leading approach to Reconciliation, mining and critical minerals, and the Yukon’s progressive business environment. The Premier will be joined in conversation by The Honourable Lisa Raitt, Vice-Chair, Global Investment Banking, CIBC. Ranj Pillai was first elected to the Yukon Legislative Assembly in 2016 and was appointed as Deputy Premier, Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources; Minister of Economic Development; and Minister responsible for the Yukon Development Corporation and Yukon Energy Corporation. He was elected for a second term in April 2021 and served as the Minister of Economic Development; Minister of Tourism and Culture; and the Minister responsible for the Yukon Housing Corporation, Yukon Liquor Corporation and Yukon Lottery Commission. In addition to his duties as Premier, he currently serves as Minister of the Executive Council Office; Minister of Economic Development; and Minister responsible for Yukon Housing Corporation. During his time in office, Pillai has worked hard to advance a strong and diverse Yukon economy. He has focused on building an ecosystem to support entrepreneurs across all sectors while supporting the Yukon’s vibrant resource sector which includes three operating mines. Pillai was recognized for this work as the recipient of the North Startup Canada 2019 Regional Award for Entrepreneur Promotion. Since 2016, the Yukon has been leading the country with the lowest unemployment rate, strong GDP growth and impressive investments in building construction. At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Pillai established the Business Advisory Council to provide guidance to the Government of Yukon. Under Pillai’s leadership, the Government of Yukon was the first jurisdiction in Canada to implement a number of crucial measures, including the Yukon Business Relief and Paid Sick Leave programs to ensure businesses and their employees were well-positioned to weather the impacts of the pandemic. Pillai is a trusted decision maker and tireless community advocate who has contributed to numerous Yukon businesses, governments, schools and not-for-profits. He also co-chaired the 2020 Energy and Mines Ministers’ Conference (EMMC) alongside the Government of Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources Seamus O’Regan and the Committee on Internal Trade alongside the Government of Canada’s Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, Infrastructure and Communities Dominic LeBlanc. Pillai sat as a Whitehorse City Councillor from 2009 to 2012. During his tenure, he spearheaded the first anti-racism and discrimination bylaw North of 60. He was previously the Executive Director of the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations Government, has held senior roles with private sector businesses and Yukon University and is a former member of the Governor General’s Leadership Conference and Banff Forum. He has also held previous roles with numerous First Nations development corporations and junior mining companies, as well as a number of NGOs focused on helping youth and vulnerable citizens.

However, Jordan Bitove, owner of the Toronto Star sees a brighter future. Whether it’s breaking news like John Tory’s recent decision to resign, the ongoing political tensions around the Greenbelt or exclusive stories on the Sherman case, Toronto Star delivers the news with honesty and integrity. Join Canadian Club Toronto on March 30 when Jordan will discuss the critical role of journalism in supporting our democracy, dive deep into the importance of supporting Canadian owned and operated media, offer a look behind the curtains of publishing and what we can expect for media in Canada in the years to come. Jordan’s distinguished career at the forefront of Canadian business includes ownership of 80 newspapers, technology, real estate, hospitality, natural resources, and distribution. In 1998 he founded Vision Companies, an industry-leading experiential marketing company. He also founded Great Moments in Catering in 1990, which became Canada’s largest privately held event catering company. As a leader in Canada’s sports industry, Jordan helped launch the Toronto Raptors basketball team, the first NBA franchise awarded outside the United States, and he was part of the ownership consortium that built the SkyDome (now Rogers Centre). He also helped orchestrate Toronto’s bid for the 2008 Olympics. Since 2013, Jordan has been a member of the Board of Directors of ClearStream Energy Services. He has been a member of the Board of Trustees for SickKids Foundation since 2012. He previously served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Toronto International Film Festival, the Board of Governors of Western University, and the Canadian Advisory Board for Right to Play. In 2012, he was a recipient of the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Medal for his philanthropic work. Jordan is a graduate of Western University and holds the position of Honorary Consul to the Republic of North Macedonia.

    Join Canadian Club Toronto on March 7, on the eve of International Women’s Day, when we will hear from Laurentian Bank’s President and Chief Executive Officer, Rania Llewellyn, the first woman to lead a chartered Canadian Bank. Rania will be joined in conversation by Tanya van Biesen (Managing Partner, Board & CEO Succession Practice Canada, Korn Ferry) to discuss her ideas and efforts around equity at Laurentian and beyond, with a focus on the power of mentorship, sponsorship, and allyship. Rania Llewellyn was appointed as President and Chief Executive Officer of Laurentian Bank in 2020, the first woman to head a major Canadian chartered bank. Under her leadership, the Bank has launched a new three-year strategic plan, purpose and core values, and has exceeded all of its financial targets over the past two years. Rania is a first-generation Canadian, having immigrated from the Middle East in her teenage years. As a transformational change leader, her top priority is building high-performance teams and creating a culture of equality, diversity and inclusion. Her focus on improving the customer experience and driving growth and shareholder value has earned her wide recognition and awards, including being awarded the Canadian Chamber of Commerce’s Business Leader of the Year Award in 2023, being named on Maclean’s 2022 The Power List, and included as one of the Top 25 Women of Influence in 2021. Rania has more than 27 years of experience in the banking industry. Previous experience includes serving as an Executive Vice President at Scotiabank, where she began her career as a part-time teller. She holds Bachelor of Commerce and MBA degrees from Saint Mary’s University where she focused on Finance, Marketing and International Business. In 2022, Ontario Tech University awarded her with an Honorary Doctor of Laws, and she received an Honorary Doctor of Commerce from Saint Mary’s in 2014. Rania is married to Sean Llewellyn and is the proud mother of two wonderful children, Sofia and Zachary.
