BWI Daily: Penn State vs. Maryland Recap Nov 14, 2022
    Show notes

Penn State football defeated Maryland on Saturday for its eighth win of the season in blowout fashion. Today, the BWI Daily Edition will discuss the win and the storylines coming out of the 30-0 shutout of the Terrapins. Today, host Thomas Frank Carr is joined by senior editor Nate Bauer to discuss the game. While the quarterbacks dominated the discussion postgame, T-Frank puts his foot down and opens the show with a discussion of the Penn State defense. Manny Diaz's defense put on another show Saturday, blanking Maryland and quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa. Bauer describes how they did it by discussing what happened on first and second down during the first half and the majority of the second. Meanwhile, T-Frank comments on how Penn State learned lessons from earlier in the season and applied them to this game. In all, it was a dominating performance at every level of the defense.

Next, they flip the script and look at the Maryland offense. T-Frank discusses his continued surprise at the poor play from Tagovailoa and his performance. Despite laying out the issues that Maryland presented, T-Frank expected more from the offense. They also paint a bright future for the Penn State defense with the number of young players that are playing at an exceptionally high level.

Next, they shift to the offense and discuss the quarterback situation. They spend a lengthy time discussing when to play and when not to play freshman Drew Allar. While both disagree with his usage on Saturday, they try putting the situation into perspective. T-Frank also gives an evaluation of how Allar played when he did see the field. Meanwhile, Bauer juxtaposes head coach James Franklin's "bold and aggressive" mentality with his decisions surrounding the quarterback.

Finally, T-Frank and Bauer discuss running back Nick Singleton and what his performance on Saturday means for his Penn State career. The duo agrees that Singleton's abilities took a leap in this game, describing his journey to get there and how he's progressed.

Lastly, they wrap up the show by giving parting thoughts about Allar and how much experience he's gotten this season. Bauer compares that to what starter Sean Clifford received his first season and how much that can help him in the future. T-Frank adds on by saying it's okay if the young player doesn't excel every time he steps on the field.

BWI Live Postgame Show: Penn State, Nick Singleton, runs over Maryland Nov 13, 2022
    Show notes

Penn State beat down Maryland on Saturday in another total domination effort by the defense. The Terrapins gained 27 total yards in the first half, while the Nittany Lions methodically worked to a 27-0 halftime lead. Get the breakdown of how it happened on the BWI Live Postgame Show with Thomas Frank Carr and Tom Hannifan. They go live immediately after the game and give you the highs and lows of the contest. Subscribe to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube, so you never miss a show! https://bit.ly/3KzEcqK

Hannfian and T-Frank will take your questions live on the show, so tune in right after the game to get your voice heard.

Penn State running back Nick Singleton was back in early-season form on Saturday, rushing for 122 yards on only 11 carries before the backups filtered in during the fourth quarter. Singleton scored two explosive runs, both of which came on fourth and short. The freshman ran like a man possessed, with multiple broken tackles and great vision. Not to be outdone, fellow freshman Kaytron Allen chipped in 76 yards on the evening.

On the flip side, Maryland kept a lid on Penn State's passing attack. Unfortunately for starter Sean Clifford that meant a slow night with only 139 yards passing on 12 completions. The senior quarterback was frustrated all afternoon and seldom found open receivers.

However, the team still moved the ball, collecting three field goals to end the second quarter and then into the third.

The Penn State defense smothered Maryland quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa who struggled with pressure for the second straight week. Manny Diaz's defense racked up seven sacks and limited Maryland to one yard per-carry before the game was out of reach.

The Nittany Lions' march towards ten wins continues next week when they hit the road to face Rutgers at 3:30.

Penn State ran over Maryland on the way to it's eighth win of the season.

BWI Daily: Penn State-Maryland recruiting preview & best bets Nov 11, 2022
    Show notes

Penn State football takes on Maryland this weekend at Beaver Stadium. As the season winds to a close, what’s going on in recruiting? Is this a big weekend with a regional foe like the Terrapins? Or will it be a quiet November contest dampened by the rain? Recruiting insider Ryan Snyder joins the BWI Daily to discuss that and give you his best bets of the weekend. Subscribe to the BWI Daily Edition, so you don’t miss the show! https://bit.ly/3KzEcqK

Host Thomas Frank Carr starts the show with a developing story this week with a Penn State official visit. Late-rising prospect out of Georiga, Cameron Wallace, is visiting Happy Valley this weekend for his first official visit. Snyder discusses what he knows about the player and Penn State’s interest level in the Mont Vernon native. Then, he discusses how the number of official visits remaining and the timeline before signing day play into this decision.

Next, they delve into the list of prospects coming for the game on Saturday. Is it a deep list of talent? The weather has been rainy this weekend, and Snyder discusses if that is a factor in players attending the game. He highlights the primary group of players attending Saturday but then focuses on the class of 2024 and edge defender Darien Mayo.

Lastly, Snyder discusses his conversation with four-star receiver Ryan Wingo. The top-50 prospect in the Class of 2024 visited Penn State this fall, and Snyder had a chance to ask Wingo how Penn State stacks up to his other top schools.

Then, it’s time for Ryan Snyder’s Best Bets. Today’s action includes:

North Carolina (+3.5) at Wake Forest

    Kansas (+3.5) at Texas Tech

    TCU (+7) vs. Texas

    Maryland (+10.5) vs. Penn State

After giving his plays for the week, Snyder and T-Frank finish the show previewing the game against Maryland and the pivotal matchups that will help decide the game.

BWI Daily: Penn State vs. Maryland Preview Nov 10, 2022
    Show notes

Penn State football takes on Maryland Saturday at 3:30, and Blue White Illustrated is getting you ready for the game with the official Penn State vs. Maryland preview. Host Thomas Frank Carr fills in for Sean Fitz and Nate Bauer returns to give you his thoughts on practice and the upcoming game. Subscribe to the BWI Daily Edition on YouTube, so you don't miss the show!

T-Frank and Fitz start the show by discussing what they saw at Penn State's open practice on Wednesday evening. Bauer oversaw the defensive observations this week and reported what he did and, most importantly, who he didn't see at practice Wednesday evening. Bauer also noted a specific tonal shift with the practice this week. He attributes that to a late-season effort for engagement from the coaching staff.

Next, they shift to the offense and discuss what T-Frank saw with the offensive line, where he spent most of his time. First, he discusses what he saw from right tackle Caedan Wallace, coach Phil Trautwein, and freshman left tackle Drew Shelton when he was observing the evening's proceedings. From there, they discuss the state of the offensive line with the news this week about Landon Tengwall's surgery, Hunter Nourzad's announcement, and Olu Fashanu's absence.

T-Frank has some thoughts about the narrative of Fashanu as a top-10 draft pick and his reservations about that reality coming true in the spring. In addition, he discusses facts he found when researching younger offensive linemen entering the league and other factors that he thinks others are ignoring in the evaluation.

After discussing Penn State head coach James Franklin's post-practice comments, they dive into the preview of Maryland. First, T-Frank discusses what he's seen on film from the Terps and how which key matchups he thinks will determine the game on Saturday. Next, they discuss the Maryland passing game and how T-Frank thinks Taulia Tagovailoa's injury affects him during games. Penn State isn't the only team with an offensive line in flux, either. They discuss Maryland's issues at center and how Wisconsin neutralized the passing game last week in Maryland's loss to the Badgers. Finally, check out the podcast to hear why he thinks screens are such an important part of the upcoming game.

Next, they discuss the defense and how that unit can attack Penn State. T-Frank labels freshman linebacker Jaishawn Barham "Maryland's Abdul Carter." Finally, they give their game predictions for Saturday.

Penn State Hoops Podcast: The inaugural show Nov 10, 2022
    Show notes

Finally, Blue White Illustrated delivers the show that Penn State basketball fans have been asking for repeatedly. Host Thomas Frank Carr sits with basketball reporter Nate Bauer, and the two discuss Penn State hoops to prepare you for the 2022-23 season. Bauer delivers insight into recruiting, NIL, the season, and more. Subscribe to the Blue White Illustrated podcast feed to get this audio-exclusive content.

Under head coach Micah Shrewsberry, the Nittany Lions are heading on an upward trajectory in recruiting. The team has secured back-to-back top 30 classes and has a collection of talent on the floor that Bauer thinks will perform well. They start the show by discussing the recruiting class that signed this week, which consists of four-star stretch four Carey Booth, combo guard Logan Imes and shooting guard Braeden Shrewsberry. Bauer breaks down each player’s game and what they bring to the class. Then, he chronicles the path of Shrewsberry and Imes to Penn State and how he thinks both are undervalued in the recruiting landscape.

Next, he discusses Booth and the player’s top-50 potential. How high is the ceiling, and what will it take to get there? Finally, Bauer and T-Frank discuss the Penn State legacy’s abilities.

Lastly, they finish the recruiting discussion by looking at the misses in the class and the areas to improve. Bauer points to the Penn State staff’s ability to identify top talent before others in the industry but highlights the inability to land those players. He also shares what he knows about the NIL situation at Penn State. T-Frank digs into what he knows about the big picture of where Penn State football is, how basketball fits into the picture at Penn State, and in the national landscape.

Next, they move on to the current Penn State team, and it’s DNA. Bauer is very high on the team, led by veteran Jalen Pickett. The veteran basketball reporter has high praise for Pickett’s game and thinks that he’s in line for potential postseason awards. Bauer also shocks T-Frank with a prediction about the 2022-23 basketball team. They discuss the strengths of the team and the potential weaknesses that will hinder them during portions of the season.

BWI Daily: Penn State loses a lineman for the season, wrestling preview Nov 09, 2022
    Show notes

Penn State football takes on Maryland this weekend in what many consider the last true test of the season. To prepare fans for Saturday, reporter Greg Pickel and host Thomas Frank Carr will discuss James Franklin’s comments from Tuesday and give their thoughts on the game this weekend. Subscribe to the BWI Daily Edition, so you don’t miss the show! https://bit.ly/3KzEcqK

This week’s biggest news for Penn State football is that starting left guard Landon Tengwall had an unspecified surgery and is out for the remainder of the year. What does this do to the Penn State offensive line? Pickel and T-Frank discuss that and how the team has responded in his absence. The duo discusses the depth at the offensive line, the rash of injuries and how they may have come at the right time in the season.

Part of that conversation is the recent news about Cornell transfer Hunter Nourzad, who made an announcement Tuesday morning. T-Frank and Pickel react to the statement and what it means for the team. They discuss the role of offensive line coach Phil Trautwein as well. Finally, T-Frank wants to know if Penn State can sustain this offensive line success with projected departures that could happen this offseason.

Next, they dig into the upcoming game against Maryland. What type of foe does Penn State face? Pickel and T-Frank differ in what they see in the Terps, but they come to a similar conclusion. They discuss the play of Taulia Tagovailoa and the injuries that Maryland is dealing with on offense.

They’ll also discuss how the defense has performed and what unexpected things Maryland might try on Saturday. Next, they touch on the regionality of the game and the recruiting implications that Saturday could bring. Lastly, they take a step back to get Pickel’s view of the Penn State season and his thoughts on how the perception of the season sits with fans.

Finally, they’ll discuss the Penn State wrestling season and head coach Cael Sanderson’s season-opening press conference. Pickel will discuss the lineup and informs T-Frank of the new starters that fans should familiarize themselves with before the start of the year this Friday. T-Frank will also get a season outlook from Pickel and what he expects from this group.

BWI Live Postgame: Penn State gets blowout it needed against Indiana Nov 06, 2022
    Show notes

Penn State football once again responded to a loss with a blowout win. This time they dominated Indiana, scoring 31 points before the start of the fourth quarter on the way to a 45 to 14 route. Penn State's defense gave up a touchdown on the second drive of the game but then shut down the Hoosiers offense for the rest of the game. Join the BWI Live Postgame show to discuss the big win for the Nittany Lions and have your questions answered. https://bit.ly/3KzEcqK

The Penn State defense allowed eight yards after that initial drive before the offense put the game away, and the backups came into the game with seven minutes left in the third quarter. That dominating effort was spearheaded by the Penn State defensive line that knocked starting quarterback Jack Tuttle out of the game while forcing four sacks. In addition, the Nittany Lion run defense smothered Indiana with 15 tackles for loss.

On offense, Kaytron Allen dominated the game for the Nittany Lions, who ran through the Indiana defense with ease. Allen forced multiple missed tackles on the way to 85 yards rushing and three touchdowns to go, with two catches for 72 yards. Allen caught a simple check-down from quarterback Sean Clifford and then weaved through the Indiana secondary to set up a go-ahead touchdown moments later. He finished with three touchdowns to power the Nittany Lions to the blowout.

With a blowout win comes the backup quarterback. Penn State fan's favorite reserve player, Drew Allar, impressed in his 20-plus minutes on the field, throwing two touchdowns, including a strike from the one-yard line to Harrison Wallace. Starter Sean Clifford had an up-and-down day, throwing a bad early interception, but fighting back with several good throws on the run to generate explosive yards to receiver Mitchell Tinsley.
