BWI Live: Coaching staff sets the stage for 2023 fall camp Jun 14, 2023
    Show notes

Penn State football opened the doors of the Lasch Building a week ago and spent several hours talking with the media during the middle of the summer period. Blue White Illustrated was on hand and is here to discuss their conversations with the Penn State coaches.

Today on the BWI Live Show, host Thomas Frank Carr and senior editor Nate Bauer will chat about their conversations with the staff. Bauer spoke with new wide receiver's coach Marques Hagans, tight ends coach Ty Howel and special teams coordinator Stacy Collins. Meanwhile, T-Frank spent the entirety of his time with offensive coordiantor Mike Yurcich. Both experts gained interesting insight into the team and will share it on the show.

If you want to ask a question or hear your opinion on the live show, join Bauer and T-Frank at 10 am on YouTube. Subscribe to Blue White Illustrated to get live and breaking news content notifications.

    Penn State coaches open up

Bauer spoke with both the tight ends coach and the wide receivers coach. Franklin has been not-so-subtly pitting the wide receivers against the tight ends this summer to fuel the competition and raise the level of play from each group. How is that taken internally? Bauer gathered some insights.

He also spoke with Collins about the team's plan at kick return this year and if it involves superstar tailbacks Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen. Bauer investigates the prudence of playing such valuable players and exposing them to potential injury.

Meanwhile, T-Frank spoke with Yurcich on a wide variety of topics. He discussed Yurcich's role in evovling the offense each year, adapting to player strengths, and what it takes to get a new starting quarterback ready for the season. He also went in-depth with Yurcich about where he thinks he's grown as an offensive coordinator over the years.

    Between the Lines

They save Frnaklin's comments for their proper place on the show, between the lines. Each time James Franklin speaks, our experts will read between the lines of his words and discern the meaning of Franklin's comments. Today they'll discuss Franklin's remarks about quarterback Drew Allar, and the defensive tackles.

    BWI Mailbag

The show's finale is saved for you! T-Frank and Nate will answer questions from the BWI Message board and comments from the live chat during the show. Once again, join the show at 10 am so you can have your voice heard on the leading show for Penn State football!

It was another busy weekend for Penn State football recruiting, with several events happening over a three-day period. Penn State's second official visit weekend kicked off on Friday, followed by another prospect camp on Sunday.

Who stood out from those events? What are the important details to know? We're breaking it all down on the BWI Live Recruiting Show today at 10 am on YouTube.

Penn State in position to land top targets?

Penn State hasn't yet secured a commitment for the official visit weekend. But the reports and feedback from the weekend, in which Penn State had several top targets on campus, were very encouraging. Fitz shares what he's learned from his reporting and conversations with recruits. Meanwhile, T-Frank will try to ascertain where things stand with the class and how congested things are heading into the third weekend of the official visit calendar. One date we do know is that four-star defensive end Jaylen Harvey set his commitment date. Join the show to find out when that is.

    Penn State prospect camp update

Unlike last week, there were fewer 'names' to follow at Penn State's prospect camp on Sunday. Still, Fitz and T-Frank found interesting prospects to follow throughout the camp and learn more about during the Sunday afternoon testing circuit. T-Frank and Fitz will highlight the players that most intrigued them and standout testing players.

Finally, they'll review the players that walked away with offers and the national recruits that Penn State is throwing their hat in the ring with during #BeyondBlessed.

During the BWI Live Recruiting Show, Fitz and T-Frank will take your questions and answer comments from the live chat. Join the show at 10 am on YouTube to be a part of the action!

BWI Podcast: Brad Maendler discusses Ethan Grunkemeyer and Drew Allar Jun 09, 2023
    Show notes

Penn State fans got a surprise last month when unheralded quarterback from Ohio, Ethan Grunkemeyer, committed to the Nittany Lions a day before he was named the MVP of the Elite 11 regional in State College. The three-star quarterback is a late riser in the Class of 2024.

Today, the host of the BWI Daily Edition, Thomas Frank Carr, talks with Grunkemeyer’s quarterback coach, Brad Maendler. Maendler is the same coach that helped former five-star quarterback and current Penn State player Drew Allar rise from an unknown player into a top prospect in the Class of 2022.

Maendler sits down with T-Frank to discuss Grunkemeyer’s skills and to give insight into where Allar is heading into his first presumed year as a starter. Check out the full conversation on YouTube or wherever you get your podcasts. Below is a recap of some of the highlights about Grunkemeyer.

Maendler noticed something special about Grunkemeyer

It’s no surprise that Grunkemeyer’s quarterback coach would believe in him more than others, but Maendler also has social media receipts that back up his confidence that Grunkemeyer would blow up this spring. T-Frank reads those comments back to Maendler on the show about Penn State’s 2024 QB commit. But Maendler says that steam around Grunkemeyer began building before the camp season he predicted would be great for the young QB.

“It actually started happening before that, and the galvanizing of his recruiting really kind of dates back to January, late January, when it was to contact period where coaches were actually going out seeing him throw, and it was a chance for coaches to kind of see how the ball comes out of his hand, to confirm height, weight and those kinds of things,” Maendler says on the show.

And he was getting tremendous feedback from coaches. In fact, I remember one of the times his mom had mentioned to me that Pat Fitzgerald, head coach at Northwestern, was there, and Pat Fitzgerald was raving about the way he was throwing the football, and I just started, you know, getting like a steady and consistent sort of messages.”

Penn State getting a “human Jugs Machine”

Maendler’s praise for Grunkemeyer is laced with instructional evidence from a quarterback coach’s perspective. For T-Frank, a film analyst, and Maendler, the consistency of the young quarterback is a standout trait. Maendler explains this as creating “best version throws”.

“One of the things that I talked to the kids about is we’ve got to work towards “best version throws.” Ideally a best version throw is when you look your best it’s with spin and velocity and ball placement, appropriate velocity because sometimes we need to change speeds.”

The consistency in his mechanics led Grunkemeyer to an Elite 11 finals appearance in Los Angeles later this month. But it’s not just accuracy, Grunkemeyer has a strong arm, according to Maendler. Penn State may have found a steal in this regard.

“He’s in the top 1% of his class. You know, I think just I’ve seen a lot of the ’24 guys throw and, you know, I think maybe you’ve got [Dominic] Rayola, and you’ve got Ethan with probably two or three other kids that that’s how much velocity he throws with.

And where you really see it is his intermediate velocity, the throws he makes, where he has to drive the ball in between people or, you know, to ball throws where he’s got to get it over the under coverage. But in front of the over coverage and just that ability to have that arc and pace on that football it’s it’s really impressive.”

The pair discuss Grunkemeyer further before switching to discuss Allar and the next Maendler quarterback protege, 2025 passer Ryan Montgomery. Penn State is actively recruiting Montgomery, and Maendler discuses what he’s seen of the relationship between those two parties.

Learn more about Penn State's unheralded but talented quarterback commit Ethan Grunkemeyer from his QB coach, Brad Maendler.

James Franklin frank about Big Ten priorities

Bauer interviewed James Franklin last month and laid out what Franklin thinks on various topics in a series of articles. Today they discuss Franklin's comments about the Big Ten's decision to play nine conference games. Bauer will explain how Franklin sees the situation and what it means that the 10th-year coach is so vocal about his position on the topic.

Next, we shift our focus to the 2023 season. Quarterback coach Brad Maendler of QB Excelerate joins the show to discuss his work with Penn State quarterback Drew Allar. Maendler is also the private coach for 2024 quarterback commit Ethan Grunkemeyer. Catch the full interview where T-Frank and Maendler discuss both players Thursday at 7 pm on YouTube.

"His command of the offense is fantastic. The coaching staff, when I would talk to them they, would always note his ability to retain information was really high-level. When I watched the meetings, Sean Clifford set a high bar becuase it was like having a coach in the room. I get that vibe with Drew and Beau [Pribula] as well," Maendler said.

"Beau and Drew have a really strong grasp of the offense and what Coach Yurcich is trying to do."

Catch the interview during the BWI Live show to hear more about what Maendler thinks of Allar and what fans haven't seen of his talents yet.

Recruiting Show: Penn State nabs three commits in one day | Standouts from prospect camp Jun 05, 2023
    Show notes

Penn State football recruiting had a jam-packed Sunday to kick off the official visit season. The team secured three more recruits for the Class of 2024 and hosted its first prospect camp of the summer in the same day. We'll cover all of that today on the BWI Live Recruiting Show.

Host Thomas Frank Carr and recruiting insider Ryan Snyder discuss the impact of Penn State's latest surge of commitments and review who stood out to them during Penn State's first prospect camp of the summer. It was an important day for Central Catholic wide receiver Peter Gonzalez, who has an official visit set for later this month. Did he ace his final audition?

Subscribe to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube so you don't miss any live content during the summer recruiting season. Stay tuned later this week for a conversation with quarterbacks coach Brad Maendler. Maendler is the private coach for Penn State commit Ethan Grunkmeyer and current Lions QB Drew Allar.

Penn State locks up key defensive targets and a rising tackle commit

The biggest news of Sunday was the massive recruiting run that the Nittany Lions secured on Sunday after its first official visit weekend of the season. Offensive lineman Deryc Plazz was the first to announced his commitment Sunday, followed by defensive tackle Xaveir Gilliam and finally top safety prospect Dejuan Lane.

Snyder will recap Plazz's story, which includes a quick ascent up the Penn State tackle board. With so many players in the Class, T-Frank will discuss where Plazz fits in the group.

Next, they'll switch to Lane and discuss what is known in the recruitment of four-star safety. They'll also answer the question of Lane's ranking. Is he underrated?

Finally, they'll turn to Gilliam and spend time discussing where he fits on Penn State's defensive tackle board, what he brings to the table and more.

Peter Gonzalez stands out at Prospect camp

Consensus three-star receiver Peter Gonzalez was the main story of SUnday's prospect camp. The Pittsburgh native has an offer from Penn State and an official visit for later this summer, but the program wanted him to camp first to get a final testing measurement on him. Snyder and T-Frank will share what they saw and the data they gathered on Gonzalez throughout the afternoon. Did he earn himself a spot in the Penn State Class of 2024?

They'll also discuss the other committed players at camp, including offensive lineman Caleb Brewer and linebacker Anthony Speca. From there, they'll discuss the other players that stood out on Sunday.

Penn State hosting top target this weekend

When Penn State's top overall target is on campus this weekend, there isn't any other place to start. Four-star lineman Liam Andrews announced this week that he is taking his official visit to Happy Valley during the first weekend of the official visit season. How important is Andrews? T-Frank and Snyder discuss his recruitment and abilities, and T-Frank even gives his preferred position for Andrews to land at if he joins the Nittany Lions.

But Andrews is one of many potential defensive linemen on campus. The Nittany Lions have a group of linemen coming in, and Snyder recaps where he fits in the picture for this class. They'll also discuss how important this weekend is for new defensive line coach Deion Barnes with so many top targets on campus.

Next, they'll shift their focus to wide receiver. Several of the team's top targets at the position are committed elsewhere, including Miami pledge Chance Robinson. Snyder breaks down the situation with Robinson and how well he fits into the program.

Next, they'll review the offensive line commits coming to campus this weekend because they're fresh names to the recruiting story. Florida linemen Deryc Plazz and Tye Hylton will make the trek north for the first time to take an official visit. With top targets still on the board and only a few spots left, will these players rise up the board?

Finally, they'll discuss the secondary and linebacker players in attendance this weekend. Virginia linebacker Chris Cole is visiting, but with only one linebacker spot available, will he or Elijah Newby find a home with the Nittany Lions? Or can Penn State take both talented outside linebackers? Check out the show for those discussions and more.

Penn State commits stand out in camp

The weekend's top story is Grunkemeyer, who is quickly becoming a name to know for the summer recruiting of 2024. Just over a month ago, the Ohio native earned a Penn State offer, which he accepted, committing to the program on Saturday. So now he's off to the Elite 11 finals in California in mid-June.

The group will discuss what they saw of Grunkemeyer and what he did to earn the top billing from the camp. T-Frank followed Penn State's newest quarterback around the camp and has highlights to share with fans during the show. See for yourself how well Penn State offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich's most recent pupil performed this weekend.

Next, the group will discuss what they learned about Reynolds during his workout with the receivers on Sunday. The former high school quarterback is switching full-time to tight end this summer and stood out with great route running and hands. So does Penn State have another star tight end from New England on its hands?

Finally, the trio will discuss the other quarterbacks and players from the day. There were several 2025 quarterbacks that Fitz and Snyder followed throughout the day. Hear what they have to say about Malik Washington and Blake Hebert.

    Big Board Reset

It wasn't just quarterbacks and Elite 11 camp reactions that made headlines this weekend. In today's installment of Read and React, Fitz shares some takeaways from his Penn State recruiting Big Board which he shared Friday afternoon. The Nittany Lions need to fill the second half of its 2024 class this summer, and Fitz has the positional reset and names to know. He'll share some tidbits on the show.

Lastly, the group will discuss a recent offer from the program in the segment #BeyondBlessed. Class of 2026 offensive lineman Tyler Merrill received an offer from the program this week and was on hand at the All-22 portion of the camp Sunday. T-Frank got an up-close look at the young players' skills and will share them with the group.
