    Penn State Mock Class

Before we get to the hard news of the week, recruiting insider Ryan Snyder put together a mock class for this recruiting cycle. Which players filled out the offensive roster with only a few spots remaining? The Penn State defense has very few commits heading into May, so which players will fill those open spots?

Also, will Penn State's emphasis on secondary players result in more cornerbacks, safeties, or linebackers in the upcoming group of defenders? We examine the state of the current roster to get a better picture of how the team will construct its incoming class.

    Elite 11 and visitor preview

However, this week's main attraction is that the Elite 11 camp is coming to State College and drawing in talent from across the country. Penn State is also using it as a visit weekend for prospects, including an official visit for Class of 2025 defensive end, Iose Epenesa. He and top 2026 quarterback Dia Bell make up the most notable names descending on Happy Valley this week. How do Snyder and fellow BWI Insider Sean Fitz feel this weekend stacks up from a long-term perspective?

Finally, we'll discuss the Elite 11 camp and which players will highlight the upcoming prospect workout. With quarterback Bekkem Kritza in the class, does Penn State want to add a second quarterback? If not, is the focus on passers for the upcoming cycle? We'll break down everything you need to know about Penn State's recruiting ambitions this upcoming weekend.

Wrestling Show: Penn State sends two more to Paris Olympics, David Taylor addresses move to OK State May 15, 2024
    Show notes

Penn State wrestling is grinding through the second month of the collegiate offseason. Usually, this time of year would be slow with minimal news to discuss. However, this May, the headlines continue to come hot and heavy around Cael Sanderson's program. You're in luck, though: The Blue-White Illustrated wrestling show and podcast is back with a fresh episode to get you caught up on the latest information.

Host Thomas Frank Carr and reporter Greg Pickel start the show with a recap of Zain Retherford's terrific triumph at the World Olympic Games qualifier last weekend. The Penn State product punched his ticket to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, France by winning four matches in repechage, or the consolation bracket, at 65 kilograms, to finish third and qualify the U.S. and himself for the summer games in that weight class. He beat Sujeet Sujeet of India in the bronze medal match to do so.

"Retherford was relentless with his forward pressure throughout the match," USA Wrestling wrote in a recap. "Midway through the first period, Retherford got in deep on a low single, was driving through Sujeet for the finish, but was countered for two. Heading into the second period trailing, 2-0, Retherford’s pace paid off. He capitalized on an errant shot attempt by Sujeet for a go-behind takedown, taking the lead on criteria, 2-2. His defense held firm for the rest of the match, cementing the win and his place in the bronze medal Olympic playoff match.

Retherford is one of four Nittany Lion Wrestling Club members and six U.S. Team members total going to the summer games. The full list includes:

    57 kilograms: Spencer Lee

    65 kilograms: Zain Retherford (NLWC)

    74 kilograms: Kyle Dake (NLWC)

    86 kilograms: Aaron Brooks (NLWC)

    97 kilograms: Kyle Snyder (NLWC)

    125 pounds: Mason Parris

More: Penn State wrestling needs a new assistant coach; who might some candidates be?: Hot board

From there, Carr and Pickel discuss Greg Kerkvliet's return to the Penn State program for the 2024-2025 season. What does it mean that he, Carter Starocci, and Beau Bartlett are all coming back? After that conversation, the pair dive into the reaction from David Taylor's introductory news conference at Oklahoma State. And, the two break down what the Nittany Lions might be looking for to replace assistant coach Jimmy Kennedy, who is going to Stillwater with Taylor.

This week's episode wraps up with an early look at the 2024-2025 Penn State wrestling lineup at 125 pounds. Who could man the spot this year? The duo break it down.

The Penn State football Recruiting Class of 2025 got a surprise commitment from unranked tight end prospect Matt Henderson a week ago. With several national prospects left on the recruitin board, why did Penn State accept Henderson's commitment? We'll answer that today by discussing the team's track record of finding and developing the right high school athletes that turn into premiere college tight ends. Join the BWI Live Show today at 10 a.m. as we discuss Ty Howle's ability to recruit and develop top-tier athletes at his position.

With official visits fast approaching, be sure to subscribe to the Blue-White Illustrated YouTube Channel and our site so that you don't miss insider intel, breaking news videos, and expert analysis. The BWI Live Show comes to you Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday every week year-round.

    Penn State lands Matt Henderson

For the second year in a row, Penn State found and recruited an underrated tight end prospect. Last year, Luke Reynolds went from an unheralded three-star player to a top-50 prospect during his senior season. Willt he same be true of Henderson? We discuss his physical tools and what he shares in common with those players that came before him in the recruiting process.

We'll also discuss what Penn State looks for in a tight end prospect. Most of the team's commits don't play the position in high school, so how does Howle identify the correct jumbo-receivers to convert into tight ends? We highlight certain physical indicators on today's show that indicate potential growth. From there, we'll discuss the other characteristics of a tight Nittany Lion end.

    Discussing the team's current players

After reviewing the recruiting situation, we turn our attention to the position on the Penn State roster. Which players are next up for the team that's sent multiple tight ends to the NFL in the last five years? We'll discuss Tyler Warren's importance to the new offense under Andy Kotelnicki. Next, we'll recap the position battle for the second tight end spot between Khalil Dinkins and Andrew Rappleyea. Which player has the leg up, and what will determine the position in the battle this summer? We discuss what is next for that pair of players.

We also take questions from fans submitted to the show. What are the underlying characteristics of a James Franklin offense? From coordinator to coordinator, what are the common themes that Franklin has leaned towards? Fans also want to know how the integration of Pac-12 officials and players could affect the playing style of the Big Ten on defense.

Join the show to get your questions and thoughts on air!

The Penn State Nittany Lions will need several players on offense and defense to take critical steps in development this year if the team wants to compete for postseason relevance. We’re counting down the ten players on either side of the ball who have the talent and experience to make those steps on today’s BWI Live Show. Join us as we look at the offensive and defensive players who can improve the team’s performance. Here’s the criteria for the players on today’s list.

Physical skills necessary to be a standout player or difference maker in their position

They have to be able to reach that ceiling realistically or close to it this upcoming season.

Must be on a path to contribute in 2024

Players who have reached some version of their ceiling, such as K.J. Winston or Kobe King, won’t be included.

If you want to check out the series of articles that this show is based on, subscribe to Blue White Illustrated.

    Penn State transfer portal recap

Before getting to today’s list, we discuss last week’s final round of spring transfer portal departures. We’ll discuss their impact on Penn State from a short—and long-term perspective, focusing on safety King Mack and wide receiver Malik McClain. From a football perspective, Mack’s decision doesn’t make much sense and we discuss why.

Players with the most upside: Offense

Here’s an excerpt from the top five article today’s show is based upon.

It’s been hard to separate Ioane and JB Nelson at guard for almost a year. So, when ranking their composite skills on a “ceiling” list, we will push and keep them tied at five.

He hasn’t shown it much, but Nelson is an equally rare athlete. He’s one of the team’s strongest offensive linemen, and his performance numbers as a prospect align with those of the team’s tackles. After all, there’s a reason that he’s the team’s swing tackle.

Players with the most upside: Defense

We’ll conclude today’s show by looking at the defensive side of the football. While there are fewer players on the defense who can reasonably achieve upside than on the offense, the defense features some very promising players.

Whether he starts for Penn State or not, transfer A.J. Harris leaps to the top of our list as a player with incredible potential. He’s got the size, at 6-1, 188, but more importantly, he uses it. He hounded wide receivers during the Blue-White Game and played with a physicality that stood out to everyone.

Questions submitted on the thread will be featured on the show's final segment.

    Penn State portal recap

We start the show with a quick Penn State recruiting recap with Blue White Illustrated insider Sean Fitz. The coaching staff is gearing up for another push in recruiting at the end of the month and Fitz gets fans ready with his "Most Wanted" series. This week, he examines the defensive players that would give Penn State serious wins on the recruiting trail.

Next, we'll discuss the team's portal losses a week out from the end of the spring window. After five players, including safety King Mack and wide receiver Malik McClain, left the program, what has that done to the team's prospects for this fall? We'll discuss that impact on the Penn State roster.

Three players we're not talking enough about

Today's main show discussion focuses on the players just below the headlines. Which players are the Penn State fans and media not talking enough about? We're each bringing three to the table and discussing their importance to Penn State's chances of victory next fall.

This conversation turns into another discussion about the Penn State receiver room as Bauer has Omari Evans on his list and Fitz has Liam Clifford. Which player can help the offense more and why? We'll break down each player's case and discuss four more who deserve more attention.

    BWI Mailbag

Finally, we turn the show over to you, the viewers. What do you want to know? We've taken questions from the mailbag and chat and answered them on air. What constitutes improvement for Drew Allar? Will Penn State's run game be more explosive this year? These are some of the questions we'll tackle on today's show.

What we learned in April: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/news/recapping-penn-state-football-recruiting-april-2024/

The Penn State Nittany Lions recruiting team is hard at work identifying more talent that they'd like to secure for the 2025 recruiting class this month. We discuss some recent offers on Today's BWI Live Recruiting show, but we'll mainly focus on the top players the team has scheduled for official visits this summer. Join the show at 10 a.m. on YouTube, or check out the replay embedded in this article.

If you want to get access to the premium recruiting news, including comprehensive lists of which players plan to visit Penn State for official visits this summer, subscribe to Blue White Illustrated.

    Penn State recruiting news update

Penn State's quest for top receiver talent has expanded to span the nation. This week St. Louis native Core Simms announced that he's taking an official visit to Happy Valley in June. Join the show to learn more about his fit with the team and how 2025 is turning out to be a battle between the Nittany Lions and Missouri. Can Penn State land the 6-3 pass-catcher?

But for today's main topic we look at the offensive recruiting board to understand which players sit atop the priority list. Penn State's official visitor list for June is saturated with high four-star talent that could help change the perception and ranking of the team's recruiting class. We'll discuss which players are most important among that group and what Penn State's chances are of landing that talent.

Finally, recruiting insider Ryan Snyder recaps the major events and storylines of April. How unusual was it for Penn State to have a down recruiting list at the Blue-White Game? What were the highs and lows of the month?

    Drafted players as prospects

Finally, we end the show recapping the 2024 NFL Draft the only way that the Recruiting Show knows how; has prospects. Snyder and Blue Whit Illustrated Publisher Sean Fitz discuss the team's eight drafted players' Penn State recruiting stories and what led them to the team. We'll review their prospect composite ranking, the main points of their recruiting story, and how the team landed them.

Check out the show to revisit three-star Olu Fashanu's recruitment and how he went from an unremarkably-ranked prospect into a top pick in the draft. Also, learn how one phone call changed the trajectory of Daequan Hardy's Penn State recruiting story after his senior season championship game performance.

All of that, and more on today's BWI Live Recruiting Show!

Eight Penn State Nittany Lions were drafted in the 2024 NFL Draft over the weekend. On today’s show, we’ll revisit where each player landed and what sort of situation they find themselves in at the next level. However, one player is probably more controversial than the rest regarding his decisions over the last year. So, what happened to Kalen King? The former second-team All-American fell to the seventh round, just three picks from the final selection in the draft. We’ll discuss the factors that led to his draft stock falling, and what situation he finds himself in with the Green Bay Packers.

We’ll also discuss the players whose stock is up after spring football for the Penn State Nittany Lions. Which players did the most to move their needle in the correct direction? We’ll give you some of the names we selected. But on the flip side, who is sliding back into the pack? We’ll highlight specific players who need an adjustment in fan expectations.

    Penn State draft recap

King wasn’t the only fascinating player from the NFL Draft this past weekend. We’ll review each player’s fit with their new teams and discuss how they mesh at the next level. For one, Olu Fashanu fits very well with the New York Jets on the field.

On the flip side of organizational stability from the Chiefs is the New York Jets. From a schematic and developmental fit, Penn State tackle Olu Fashanu fits very well within the Jets program as the tackle of the future behind Tyron Smith. He’ll get to learn from a Hall of Fame mentor and work on his run-game skills until he gets called into the starting lineup.

    Spring practice risers and fallers

Finally, we tie up loose ends from Penn State spring football with a look at the players who made moves. Which players are on the rise? Which players are slipping back. Here’s a snippet of what we discussed on today’s show.

Confidence and strength are sometimes hard to tell apart in the growth of an offesnive lineman. Last season, Vega Ioane played well for a redshirt freshman, but he didn’t show the dominance his 6-4, 350-pound profile hinted at. He was a good lineman with quick feet but didn’t necessarily play fast.

Fast forward to this spring, and we saw a different player. Ioane looked leaner and more confident in his movement. Notably he was looking for work instead of looking lost in pass protection during the Blue-White Game.
