The Penn State Nittany Lions football team is 3-0 and ranked second nationally heading into its first bye week of the 2025 season. Most indications are that this would be a good place to be. Yet why are there alarm bells ringing and fire alarms going off inside the Penn State fan base? Today on the BWI Live Show, we'll discuss the 52-6 win over Villanova. Then, we will discuss how the team has played through the first three games of the season to try to understand why it feels like an uncomfortable and uneasy undefeated start.

As always, you can join the show live at 10 am on YouTube to be part of the conversation. We'll take your comments and thoughts in the live chat to discuss the team's play on Saturday, and your thoughts on the team's overall play. If you can't join us live, you can catch the show on replay on the channel embedded in this article or anywhere you get your podcasts.

    Penn State vs Villanova recap

Most of today's show will be dedicated to recapping the game against Villanova and how the team played against the FCS in-state program. Why did the offense struggle to find its rhythm again? What were the challenges that 'Nova presented to the offense? We'll discuss our thoughts on the game, focusing on both the offense and defense.

Next, we'll transition to the broader picture of the program's operation in the first three weeks of this year. It's fair to say that Penn State's offensive stars, Drew Allar and Nick Singleton, have not been playing like stars. Is there a reason why? We'll give our thoughts on what we've learned about the program and what Franklin has said this month that has informed our opinions. We'll also look at the Penn State defense and what we've learned about that side's progress through the first month of the calendar to assess if they're ready to take on Oregon next weekend in the White Out Game.

Finally, we'll preview open practice, which is tonight at 5 pm. What do we think we'll see at practice? We'll discuss the team's plans for the next steps in recruiting and why the team is working today instead of on Wednesday.

The Penn State Nittany Lions defeated the Villanova Wildcats in front of a restless crowd at Beaver Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Nittany Lions offense once again looked uncomfortable against FCS Villanova. Join the BWI Live Labatt Postgame Show to discuss the win and what you thought of the game and the team's performance through three games. We'll be taking your questions and comments throughout the sixty-minute show.

Penn State puts up 21 points in the first half

Once again, the Penn State offense failed to look crisp and effective in the first half of the game. Quarterback Drew Allar had a 50% completion percentage and only 80 yards passing in the second quarter. Much of that came at the two-minute warning when he found receiver Trebor Pena on a 21-yard touchdown strike to cap the team's two-minute drive.

The run game also struggled to blow away the crowd. Nick Singleton led the team with 20 carries before the backups came in for the fourth quarter. He rushed for 84 yards but failed to rip off long runs or break tackles. However, he did find the end zone twice.

The offense focused on the receivers early, with Pena leading the squad, tallying 60 yards on four catches, including seven targets. However, the big plays once again came from the tight ends. Luke Reynolds ripped off a 22-yard catch and run and caught four catches for 73 yards and a score.

Defense gives the Nittany Lions breathing room on offense

On the flip side, the Penn State defense was the dominant force that fans wanted from the team. They allowed just six yards in the first quarter and amassed 45 of their 69 yards in the first half on one 45-yard drive that ended in a missed field goal. The starting defense allowed just three drives that didn't result in a three-and-out.

The linebackers were once again heavily involved in the action. Amare Campbell had three tackles for a loss, and Tony Rojas had two to lead the team. Both players were the leading tacklers with 5 and 7, respectively. The duo also tallied three combined sacks, thanks to suffocating coverage. The team used both to spy the Villanova quarterbacks, resulting in late-down pressures.

    What's next for the team?

Penn State enters its first bye week of the season and seems to have gone through the first three games with no major injuries to starters in game action. The team will need to sharpen its play on offense because top-five Oregon comes to town on Sept. 27 for the annual White Out game.

The Penn State football team has one final non-conference game on Saturday when it hosts the Villanova Wildcats at Beaver Stadium. It will likely be a slow recruiting weekend with an FCS team in town, but recruiting is about to heat up. The team goes on a bye following the game, which means the coaches will be hitting the road to recruit for a few days before returning to prepare for Oregon in the 2025 White Out Game. Today, we'll do an early preview of the coming weeks, plus discuss Wednesday night practice, and preview the game on Saturday.

    Penn State practice update

Last night, the Penn State football team held open practice to the media, and Blue White Illustrated was there to gather intel about the team. We'll discuss what we saw and heard from the Nittany Lions to start the show. Reporter Sean Fitz checked out the defensive side of the ball and wrote notes on his observations last night. He'll discuss some of those, plus you can see our offensive highlights from last night during the live show.

Bye week and White Out Preview

While the recruiting lists to begin the season have been much better than expected, the team's recruiting intensity and importance are about to hit a fever pitch for the next few weeks. After the game against Villanova, Penn State enters its first bye week of the season. Typically on bye weeks, the coaching staff hits the road for a few days before coming back to Happy Valley to prepare for the next game. We'll preview how that process works, and what fans should expect from the next week in terms of recruiting news and visits. Is it too early to start talking about flip targets? Fitz will discuss how the process works.

From there, the team hosts Oregon in the White Out for one of the most anticipated games at Beaver Stadium in quite some time. Over 60 recruits are already confirmed for the event and we'll do a quick preview of the players that stand out from the crowded list of high school stars.

    Villanova game preview

Finally, the team still needs to win against Villanova on Saturday. Yet after two games that didn't feel as dominant as they might have, will Penn State surge past the Wildcats in the final non-conference game? We'll discuss the game and the areas where Penn State can grow and learn from the schematic tendencies that Villanova presents to them. Join the show to hear more about what to expect this weekend!

Penn State practice preview and freshman report

Penn State opens the doors of the Lasch practice facility today for another week of open viewing for the media. What are we monitoring this week? We'll discuss the things we're looking for tonight. Also, we'll outline which freshman have participated through two games to learn who is on their way to burning a redshirt and who are being held in reserve for later in the season or next year.

Stock up/Stock Down and Best Bets

It's only been two games, but the position battles that extended from training camp into the regular season are starting to come to a close. With the final non-conference game of the season looming on Saturday, it's the last chance for players to put their best foot forward and make a case for more playing time or a move up the depth chart.

We'll outline the players who are struggling and those who are surging through two games.

Next, we'll give you Greg Pickel's best best of the week. He'll pick a game he likes, the game of the week and the Penn State game this weekend to give his take on the best bets over at Bet MGM

Penn State vs. Villanova preview: What's left to work on?

The Nittany Lions face Villanova this weekend and, as we mentioned earlier, the team has more work to do on polishing its offense and defense before the conference slate begins at the end of the month.

We'll preview the things that the team can work on against Villanova, given what the Wildcats like to do on both sides of the ball, and what Penn State has shown it needs to continue working on.

The Penn State Nittany Lions Football team defeated FIU 34-0 in what was a 20-0 game in the fourth quarter. The team poured on 14 late fourth-quarter points to blow the game open and make the game feel like a bigger defeat than it felt for most of the game. On today's BWI Live Show, we'll discuss the game, Penn State head coach James Franklin's comments about it since then, and then preview the upcoming week.

We'll also take your questions and comments live on the show! Join us live at 10 a.m. on YouTube and ask your questions and leave your comments in the live chat. If you can't check out the show live, you can watch it on demand on the Blue White Illustrated YouTube Channel, here in this article, or anywhere you get your podcasts.

    Penn State vs. FIU Recap

Penn State didn't secure a "good" win over non-conference opponent FIU on Saturday, as the offense struggled to dominate in a way that fans would like. The team managed just 10 points in the first half and struggled to execute big plays consistently on offense.

We'll discuss the positives and negatives from both sides of the ball during the game and how those things played out in front of everyone on Saturday.

    Between the lines

Franklin spoke after the game about his team's performance and then took more questions from the media on Monday during his 40-minute press confernece previewing Villanova. We'll discuss the most interesting comments he made this week in our weekly "Between the Lines" segment.

Today, we'll discuss his comments about the offense working on certain aspects of its attack during the non-conference season, stars overthinking their play, and an assessment of the linebackers and safeties in the new defensive scheme.

    Looking ahead

Finally, we'll end the show, looking at the upcoming week. What do we want to learn about the Nittany Lions in the final non-conference tune-up before the bye week and Oregon? We'll discuss that, plus your questions!

Penn State struggles to get into the end zone

The Penn State offense put together 26 plays in its first three drives spanning the first and second quarters. That resulted in just seven points thanks to the team's decision to go for it on fourth down on the first and third drives, resulting in a turnover.

While the team moved the ball, they once again struggled to hit big plays in the run or passing game. Allar underthrew a deep pass to Devonte Ross , which resulted in a pass interference call, and running back Nick Singleton had several big runs of ten-plus yards, but failed to convert several opportunities into explosive play touchdowns.

Finally, Drew Allar hit Ross on a 42-yard touchdown pass into contested coverage. to put Penn State up by three scores.

    Defense pitches a shutout

On the other side, the Penn State defense wasn't perfect, but they did pitch a shutout, allowing the offense time to grind out yards and touchdowns. Keyone Jenkins kept the team in the game with timely passing plays and conversions, including two fourth downs. Running back Kejon Owens also averaged over five yards per carry throughout the game, with a long of 21 yards.

Freshman Chaz Coleman had another strong game, with three tackles, a pass breakup, a QB hit, and a tackle for a loss.

The Penn State Nittany Lions Football team takes on FIU on Saturday at noon in the second of a three-game non-conference slate to start the 2025 season. There was concern this offseason that it would be hard to attract top talent to Happy Valley in the first month of the season, given the team's opponents and the annual White Out Game's presence at the end of the month. However, after a strong first weekend, Penn State is poised to have another important weekend. Join the BWI Live Recruiting Show as recruiting reporters Sean Fitz and Ryan Snyder discuss the important names planning to travel to Penn State this weekend.

We'll also discuss the biggest high school games of the weekend that Snyder is tracking. Of course, we'll discuss the latest news with the Penn State football team, recapping practice, previewing the game and giving our final score predictions.

Join the BWI Live Recruiting Show today at 10 a.m. on YouTube. We'll be taking questions and comments from the live chat throughout the show. If you can't catch us live, check us out on replay anywhere you get your podcasts, in this article, or on the channel.

    Penn State practice update

We'll start the show by discussing the biggest recruiting news of the week. Snyder discusses what Penn State fans need to know about the team's efforts to acquire more talent for the upcoming classes of 2026 and 2027.

From there, we'll dive into what we saw from Penn State's open practice on Wednesday night. We'll discuss what head coach James Franklin had to say afterward, including a status update on starters Zuriah Fisher and nickel defender Zion Tracy.

Nevada visit recap and FIU Preview

Last weekend, Penn State saw over 50 prospects join the team for the 46-11 win over Nevada to open the season. This week, several notable players are joining the program for the noon game against FIU. Snyder will discuss the feedback he got from key recruits who joined the program a week ago. Next, we'll discuss PA prospect Tavian Branch's decision to join the program for an official visit this weekend.

Week two of Penn State football is well underway, and on today's BWI Live Show, we're wrapping up our review of Nevada and previewing the weekend's game against FIU. The team also holds open practice today, which we'll preview to start the show. WE'll also take your questions and comments about Penn State football throughout the show!

Join BWI Live at 10 a.m. on YouTube to be part of the action! If you can't make the live show, you can always watch the show on demand on the channel, in this article, or anywhere you get your podcasts. Your home for Penn State football is Blue White Illustrated!

How did the young Penn State defensive ends perform against Nevada?

Part of the conversation coming out of the game against Nevada is that, aside from Dani Dennis-Sutton, the young Penn State defensive ends were bad in the opening game.

Is that true? We reviewed the film and will outline where Jaylen Harvey and Chaz Coleman played well, as well as where they struggled against the Wolf Pack offense.

For the full video breakdown, check out the Blue White Illustrated message board and look for an article later this afternoon.

    Practice preview

We'll also discuss what we expect to see from the Penn State football team at practice tonight. We'll outline the situations we're tracking through the first month of practice to see how the team is developing heading into the second non-conference game of the year.

    Penn State vs FIU Primer

Finally, we'll preview the upcoming game against FIU. It's another game where the Nittany Lions should be massive favorites and win comfortably. Yet every team presents different opportunities to work on different aspects of an offense and defense. We'll discuss where FIU is strong and where they struggle to try and predict what aspects of its offense and defense Penn State can focus on in the game on Saturday.

Join the BWI Live Show today at 10 a.m. for that and more! If you haven't yet, subscribe to the Blue White Illustrated YouTube Channel and enable notifications so you don't miss Penn State head coach James Franklin's comments after practice tonight. We'll be bringing you live updates, notebooks about what we see, photos, and more every week of the 2025 season.
