The Penn State wrestling show from Blue-White Illustrated is back to get you up to speed on the latest news and information about the Nittany Lions. The 2024-2025 regular season is almost here, and the leaves are starting to turn color to prove that the calendar is inching closer to NCAA title defense time for head coach Cael Sanderson and his legendary program.

On this week's show, BWI reporter Greg Pickel and host Thomas Frank Carr start by recapping the latest recruiting information. Top Class of 2026 recruit Bo Bassett had Penn State coaches at his Pa., house for an in-home visit on Tuesday. He also reduced his list of suitors to 17 schools, while fellow teammate, top recruit, and junior Jax Forrest dropped his list to 10. The Nittany Lions are on both prospects' rundown of schools, which are still in the running, of course.

Following the recruiting update, Pickel and Carr move on to the latest schedule news. The Lions will host Drexel in December during the non-conference portion of their 2024-2025 schedule. Here's where things stand on that front as of Thursday night:

The show closes with a look at the NWCA All-Star Classic. Levi Haines is competing in it at 174 pounds after winning last year's 157-pound title. And, Shayne Van Ness is returning from last season's injury to wrestle at 149 in the event. What do those two developments tell us about the Penn State projected lineup in 2024-2025? Pickel and Carr discuss. Update: After the taping of this episode, Flo announced two more matches involving Penn State wrestlers. Beau Bartlett faces Ohio State’s Jesse Mendez at 141 pounds. And, Greg Kerkvliet faces Buckeye Nick Feldman at heavyweight.

When discussing freshman linebacker Anthony Speca, Franklin diverted into a recruiting pitch for players at Speca's former school, Pittsburgh Central Catholic.

Who was Franklin speaking to? Our experts, Ryan Snyder and Sean Fitz, decode the message and who it was aimed at. Next, we'll give you a glimpse into our view of Penn State practice from Wednesday night and what we learned from the event.

We discuss why this weekend is a prime recruiting weekend for the Nittany Lions, aside from the opponent and the hype around a ranked matchup.

We'll discuss the names of those attending the event and what our experts are hearing about the feeling heading into this weekend.

Finally, we'll discuss the game and what we expect from the team's performance this weekend. Who will win, and by how much? We'll give you our score predictions for Penn State vs. Illinois to end the show.

Penn State football defeated Kent State on Saturday afternoon at Beaver Stadium. Relive the game and what we learned about the Nittany Lions on the BWI Live Postgame Show. We take you through the key plays and players from the game on the sixty-minute show. Join us live or check out the replay on the Blue White Illustrated YouTube Channel, here on the site, or in your favorite podcast app.

Penn State vs. Kent State recap

The game started much like the season for Kent State, which is to say a total disaster. Starting quarterback Devin Kargman to a nasty hit from Penn State's defensive end Dani Dennis-Sutton and had to leave the game on a stretcher after the second play of the game with a leg injury.

However, it was a slow start to the game. The Penn State offense put together several long drives, but one ended with a Beau Pribula interception in the red zone on a screen. The second ended with a Tyler Warren touchdown and the Nittany Lions took a 7-0 lead into the second quarter.

However, the team built up steam throughout the second quarter, and finished at a blistering pace. Quarterback Drew Allar began to attack downfield and the team scored twice within two minutes before halftime. After halftime, Allar tossed a 59-yard touchdown to Omari Evans to end the day for the starting offense. Allar compiled 309 yards and three touchdowns before heading to the bench.

Defense smothers Kent State

The Penn State defense made the game a literal non-contest after it began the day as a virtual non-contest. After knocking Kragman out of the game, backup quarterback JD Sherrod had to leave with a lower-body injury. The defense played multiple depth players throughout the contest, even early. Despite that, they allowed only 62 yards through three and a half quarters.

We'll highlight some notable players and young talent that stood out in the game.

The Penn State Recruiting Show covers a lot of ground regarding the Penn State football team and its future today. How Not only do we give you the latest recruiting news, but we also discuss the injury to star safety KJ Winston, and preview this weekend's game against Kent State. Get ready for over an hour of wide-ranging Penn State Football talk from Blue White Illustrated's leading experts, Sean Fitz and Ryan Snyder.

You can watch the full show embedded in this article, listen on your favorite podcast platform, or on the Blue White Illustrated YouTube Channel. We also have an exclusive episode of Inside The Den discussing Winston's injury and the team's situation at quarterback in the 2025 recruiting class. Subscribe to Blue White Illustrated right now to listen or watch on the site.

Penn State suffers big blow with loss of KJ Winston

We start the show by discussing Penn State's injury situation and Winston's loss. How will Penn State adjust its personnel and scheme? We discuss how fellow safety Jaylen Reed's role changes and how the team may need to move linebacker Tony Rojas around to fit Abdul Carter into the scheme.

We also discuss which games Penn State will most feel Winston's absence.

Penn State recruiting news

It was a busy several days for the Penn State recruiting department and not all of the news was positive. Three-star safety commit Antonio Branch has a visit set for Colorado this weekend to see the Buffaloes. How concerning is the situation? We also reveal if it's an official visit during the show.

But on the flip side, Penn State offered Pittsburgh Central Catholic linebacker Bradley Gompers this week. We discuss why the Nittany Lions offered him so late and what the offer means at this stage of the 2025 recruiting calendar.

The staff didn't stop offering 2025 late risers at Gompers. They also extended an offer to Ohio athlete Chaz Coleman out of Warren G. Harding high school. We look at his film on the show and discuss what sort of athlete he is and Penn State's chances to land him.

Finally, we discuss Fitz's article from this week about the Penn State commits that have stood out in September. You can check out the full article on the site, but we highlight LaVar Arrington II and Daryus Dixson during the conversation.

Game Preview

Finally, we discuss the team's upcoming game against Kent State. Which players need to see the most reps to help their development? We give our thoughts on the game and our final score predictions.

This is the final week for the Penn State football team to make corrections and improve before the Big Ten Schedule begins to end the month of September. The MAC team at Kent State travels to Happy Valley this weekend to play the Nittany Lions at Beaver Stadium, and we're discussing the important aspects of last week's bye and this week's game on the BWI Live Show. Join us at 10 a.m. on YouTube to participate in the hour-long discussion, or check it out on replay there or embedded in this article.

We'll also discuss the team's recruiting efforts from this past weekend, James Franklin's weekly press conference from Monday, and your questions to end the show in the BWI Mailbag. The best way to get the most out of your Blue White Illustrated subscription is to join our YouTube page.

Fitz's recruiting update

Penn State football used the bye week to do some traveling and recruiting, which our reporters documented this weekend. BWI recruiting expert Sean Fitz will discuss Franklin's travels and which stops are meaningful.

The On300 update for the Class of 2025 dropped yesterday and several Penn State prospects made moves in the rankings for the top 300 players. Fitz will discuss what's important to know and where you can find more information. We'll also preview his deep dive into offensive lineman Michael Troutman. Troutman is a little-discussed commit in the Class of 2025 that Fitz will educate fans about on today's show.

Between the Lines

Franklin spoke with reporters for roughly 40 minutes on Monday to kick off the team's game week against Kent State. Our Penn State reporters were there and will discuss the meaning behind some of Franklin's most interesting answers. What's the injury status of KJ Winston? Is Franklin more open about injuries this year? We'll dive into those topic and more.

Penn State vs. Kent State preview and Mailbag

The game this weekend is a tough one to discuss because of the nature of the team's opponent. Unlike Bowling Green, which showed before the game earlier this year that it would be a quality test, Kent State has put up very poor showings so far. We'll discuss how to talk about this game, what is critical for a successful weekend, and more.

Today's BWI Mailbag questions also deal with that topic. Which players should fans be excited to see this weekend? We'll discuss that, and preview which young players might make an impact on the back end of the 2024 schedule.

The Penn State wrestling offseason is not over yet. But, it will be before we know it. The two month countdown is on until the team will, at the very least, be ready to hold its annual local media day, if it hasn't already, ahead of its first match. Head coach Cael Sanderson's team has plenty of decisions to make regarding its lineup. We'll discuss those in future episodes. In this week's show, we discuss the latest from the freestyle scene and also Carter Starocci.

Host Thomas Frank Carr and reporter Greg Pickel kick off the show with a look back at U20 Worlds. Incoming Penn State freshman Luke Lilladahl won the 57-kilogram division. His classmate, Zack Ryder, won silver at 79 kilograms, as did redshirt freshman Joshua Barr at 86 kilograms. Class of 2025 Nittany Lions verbal commitent PJ Duke (more on him in a minute) was third at 70 kilograms. Then, at 92 kilograms, incoming freshman Connor Mirasola finished fourth. What did we learn from the group's effort in Spain? Pickel provides the latest insight and opinion on that.

The Penn State football team is on a bye week which means that there's extra time for coaches to be on the road recruiting. Not only that, but there's a quality list of high school games this weekend. That means we've got a stacked rundown for you on today's BWI Live Recruiting Show. Join recruiting expert Ryan Snyder as he discusses those topics, the Bowling Green visitor feedback, top commit performances from last weekend and more!

Join the Blue White Illustrated YouTube Channel to catch the video on replay, or watch it embedded in this article. Join Blue White Illustrated right now to get access to the latest news from the front lines of Penn State's future. Our experts have decades of experience and are deeply connected. There's no better place to follow recruiting than BWI!

Penn State plan for bye week changing with new rules

Normally, bye weeks during the college football season are prime recruiting weekends for the Penn State staff. However, new rules this season changed the typical plan for the Nittany Lions. Snyder discusses how that, plus the additional bye week, makes things very different for the staff than in previous years.

However, he outlines the general plan and number of coaches that will be on the road today. Look out for an article from Snyder about the specifics later on Thursday.

Team making impressive strides in wide receiver recruiting

The next section of the show is dedicated to the player feedback that Snyder received from his inquiries into the Bowling Green visitors. While there were more than we discuss on the show, we dive deeper into the conversations he had with 2027 targets Myles McAfee and Matt Gregory. McAfree is quickly ascending to the top of the names to know in recruiting for the Nittany Lions, and Gregory is an electric track athlete who recently received a scholarship offer from the staff. We discuss their comments about the game and the program before broadening the conversation to receiver recruiting.

Penn State wide receivers coach Marques Hagans was under pressure after a lackluster June recruiting surge. Yet since then, the team has put together an impressive run of commitments in 2026 and even made up ground that they lost in June with the commitment of Matthew Outten to begin September. We discuss the dynamics of that turnaround.

Commit performance and game preview

Finally, we review the Penn State commits and targets you need to know from the last seven days of high school football. Snyder put together a list of recruits who had standout games from last weekend and the upcoming games that feature recruits you need to follow. We discuss both lists to end the show.
