A new Penn State wrestling show from Blue-White Illustrated is now live! The defending NCAA champion Nittany Lions are now just 38 days away from their first dual meet of the season. Host Thomas Frank Carr and reporter Greg Pickel start this week's episode by breaking down the schedule. From there, they dive into a list of early Hodge Trophy contenders. The show concludes with the latest recruiting news.

Penn State has seven home dates on its regular season schedule. It will wrestle foes at the Bryce Jordan Center. The Lions will make the trek across campus to host Iowa inside of the nearly 16,000-seat venue on Fri., Jan. 31. It will then host Michigan there on Fri., Feb. 7. Did the program make the right call to feature those two opponents at the BJC? Pickel and Carr discuss. They then move onto the Collegiate Wrestlign Duals. On Dec. 22, the Lions will face Binghamton, Little Rock, and Missouri. What will those bouts tell us about head coach Cael Sanderson's team ahead of the start of Big Ten action in early January? Penn State practice update

Yesterday was the Penn State football team's last day in Pennsylvania. So, how did practice go yesterday? We discuss what we saw and heard from the team during the ten-minute open window for the media and the conversations with head coach James Franklin and his players afterward.

Fitz will discuss what he saw from the defense in our weekly chat about practice.

Penn State hosted a strong list of recruits last week and we're already discussing the fallout from Saturday on the site. Join the discussion there but get a preview of what our experts know on today's show.

Penn State practice preview

The Nittany Lions are banged up heading into the team's West Coast road trip. Right tackle Anthony Donkoh was among the players that left the game on Saturday and didn't return. We'll preview what else we're looking for tonight during open practice on both sides of the football.

As he normally does, Franklin will discuss the team's progress through the first half of the week. What do we want to know from Franklin? We'll preview his comments on today's show and tell you what to expect from the leader of the Nittany Lions.

USC Preview

There's a split consensus about whether Penn State fans should fear USC or feel confident heading into the LA Coliseum this weekend to face the 3-2 Trojans. We'll dissect the matchup and preview what we think the keys are for this week with Penn State's offense and defense.

What is the team's x-factor? Who are the key players that will generate a formula for success on Saturday? Finally, how does Penn State use it's advantage in the trenches this weekend?

The Penn State Nittany Lions defeated UCLA on Saturday 27-11 to improve to 5-0 on the season. But the only thing on fans' minds is the upcoming trip to USC to face the Trojans this coming Saturday. Penn State football defeated UCLA but didn't blow out the Bruins, who came into the game as 28-point underdogs in the game. What happened that made the game closer than most expected? Penn State vs. UCLA

The Nittany Lions once again got out to a slow start, failing to score a touchdown in the first quarter and only 14 points before halftime. However, the offense picked things up after that, scoring on its next four possesions before going three-and-out to start the fourth quarter.

Penn State quarterback Drew Allar started out euqally slow, going 2-4 to start the game before getting hot and finishing the firs thalf 10-14 for 129 yards. When Allar got looks he liked during the game, he attacked downfield, primarily to slot receiver Liam Clifford. The veteran was this week's receiver of the moment, with three catches for 107 yards.

The team was also without top game-breaker Nick Singleton. In his absence, Kaytron Allen carried the load, rushing 21 times for 78 yards. Freshman Quinton Martin showed off some of his potent skills, with three catches for 18 yards and several strong runs with mutiple broken tackles.

Penn State defense dominates the third quarter again

Once agian the Penn State defense, like it's offense started slow, giving up a six play drive that took up six minutes of the first quarter, but ended on a UCLA failed fourth down attempt.

However, the defense allowed the offense to race ahead in the middle of the game, as they typcially do this season. UCLA gained -9 yards in the third quarter and only manged nine plays on the way to the loss.

It was a big game for two players who've struggled recently. Safety Zakee Wheatley finished the game with seven tackles and Tony Rojas finished with eight.

A new Penn State wrestling show from Blue-White Illustrated is now live! The defending NCAA champs now sit roughly a month away from kicking off the 2024-2025 season. In the first episode of October, host Thomas Frank Carr and reporter Greg Pickel share the latest on the Nittany Lions as they wait to take the mat.

The conversation starts with recruiting. Penn State hosted Class of 2025 star Marcus Blaze last weekend, which included a stop at Beaver Stadium to see the football team take on Illinois in primetime. The Perrysburg, Ohio native has not said much publically about his recruitment. We know that his top group consists of Michigan, Cornell, Ohio State, Purdue, and Iowa. A decision from the nation's No. 1 138-pound wrestler and No. 2 pound-for-pound grappler per MatScouts could come at any moment. Pickel and Carr discuss that and also Class of 2026 standout Bo Bassett. He put out his list of official visits this week. One of his stops will be in State College. Here's his current schedule:

Pickel and Carr discuss Bassett's recruitment and when a decisions could be made before moving on to the latest on the Lions' lineup. Six members of head coach Cael Sanderson's team will compete in next month's NWCA All-Star Classic? What do the matchups tell us about how Sanderson could fill out his lineup this winter?

It's becoming clear that four-time NCAA champ Carter Starocci will move up to 184 pounds to try and become the first five-time champ in collegiate wrestling history. Last year's 157-pound NCAA champ, Levi Haines, is moving up to 174. Sophomore Tyler Kasak, who finished third at 149 pounds year ago, looks set to replace Haines at 157. All three will compete in the NWCA event along with Greg Kerkvliet (heavyweight), Shayne Van Ness (149 pounds), and Beau Bartlett (141).

Penn State Football practice update and highlights

Before we start the show with recruiting news, we need to discuss the latest team update from Wednesday evening. Penn State opened practice to the media on Wednesday evening inside Holuba Hall and head coach James Franklin spoke with the media after the event. What did we see and hear that's important for this weekend? We'll discuss.

Recruiting News and Visitor preview

Last weekend's primetime kickoff was a major opportunity for the Nittany Lions to attract top recruiting talent to Happy Valley for the win over Illinois. Recruiting experts Ryan Snyder and Sean Fitz spent the last week contacting recruits and getting a sense for how the experience went for them. We'll discuss the most important players they've talked to and the most interesting conversations.

However, the next list is always the most important one. Snyder and Fitz are working hard to end the week confirming players who will attend the upcoming game. Which names stand out from that list? They'll discuss the most interesting players joining team for the showdown with UCLA.

Game Preview

Finally, we'll preview the team's matchup with UCLA. What do we think are the major factors that will determine the outcome? The Bruins travel to the East Coast as a nearly 30-point underdog. It doesn't seem that Penn State is in danger of an upset, but how what do we want to see from the team? What do you want to see from your Nittany Lions? Penn State practice preview

The Penn State football team gears up for another Big Ten opponent this weekend when they face UCLA at Beaver Stadium. We'll get our first and only look at the team's preparations for the upcoming game tonight when the the Nittany Lions open up practice. Host Greg Pickel takes you through what BWI is looking for in the weekly ten-minute window. We'll also preview head coach James Franklin's post-practice interview, which you can watch moments after its conclusion tonight.

The Tuesday BWI Live show is so stocked with interesting conversations that we get to fewer mailbag questions each week than we would like. This week, we hit an all-time low. So, we're making up for that and re-opening the mailbag today during the Wednesday show. We'll answer questions from the Blue White Illustrated message board members, including a discussion on the cornerback room and more.

What sort of step does the team need to take after a dominant performance against Illinois that only resulted in 21 points? We'll highlight some of the areas that the team can improve so that they're ready for the teeth of its Big Ten schedule.

Reviewing the best performances from this past weekend

Finally, we'll take one last look at Penn State's win over Illinois and highlight some underrated aspects of the game in our review of the weekly film breakdown. Penn State defensive coordinator Tom Allen finally deployed defensive end Abdul Carter as a linebacker during the previous game. What went into that, and how did he perform in those situations? We'll discuss how the move wasn't exactly what you'd think.

Next, we'll discuss the defensive decision to play the team's 11th defender. Why did redshirt freshman linebacker Dakaari Nelson play more than Cam Miller and Dejuan Lane? We'll break down those decisions. Lastly, we'll review the top run blocking performances from a standout game up front.

While the game takes center stage, the recruiting efforts around Penn State's first primetime game of the year were also in action this weekend. Penn State offense grinds out win

The high-flying offense we became accustomed to through the first month of the season didn't show up for the Nittany Lions. Penn State didn't complete a pass over 20 yards in the game. Once again, quarterback Drew Allar didn't make many mistakes to put the ball in harm's way but was off-target in the first half, missing several passes that would have converted third and fourth down.

In the third quarter, Penn State ran the ball 16 times. However, kicker Sander Sahaydak missed two field goals and kept the game close throughout the contest. Overall, the Penn State offense had four drives of eight plays or more. They also accumulated multiple chunk runs without breaking off a big run for a touchdown in the game.

Defense dominates in the second half

The Penn State defense gave up just 32 total yards in the second half before AJ Harris stepped in front of a fourth down pass from Altmyer. Harris took the ball back for a touchdown, but a block in the back penalty on slot corner Zion Tracy eliminated the defenisve score.

Still, the defense dominated the line of scrimmage all night and prevented Illinois from getting into a rhythm offensively. Illinois averaged 1.8 yards rushing on the night.
