BWI Daily: Penn State Football Week 2 Preview - Ball State Sep 09, 2021

The Penn State Nittany Lions welcome The #BallState Cardinals to a nearly sold out Beaver Stadium on Saturday and host Thomas Frank Carr has your scouting report with from The Star Press, Robby General. Robby gives his thoughts on Ball State and what type of team they return this year after a 7-1 season that included a bowl win, AP ranking, and MAC Championship in 2020.

T-Frank and Robby begin with last week's win over Western Illinois for Ball State and T-Frank asks Robby to explain why despite a 31 point performance, he didn't think that Ball State played their best game.

Robby then gives his thoughts on if he thinks the team is worthy of a AP Top 25 ranking, as they have received votes so far this season.

They discuss third-year starting quarterback Drew Plitt and his progression and game as a starter for the Cardinals as well as his on-field chemistry with star receiver Justin Hall. From there they take a look at the other offensive weapons other than Hall and then discuss the offensive line, which is a veteran group.

T-Frank notes that he thinks the secondary is the strength of the Ball State Defense under Head Coach Mike Neu and Robby gives his impressions of a group that is playing well together. They also discuss the important of slot safety Bryce Crosby as well as the other veterans in that group.

T-Frank was particularly impressed with cornerback Nic Jones and asks General what is role is in the defense seeing as he is not the starter, but is a productive player on the defense.

They wrap up with a discussion of the front-seven and their unique approach to the defensive line, where they only play three down linemen and rotate at a high level. T-Frank asks General if he thinks that the team can continue to do that this week against Penn State's no huddle attack and if the Ball State defense can frustrate the PSU attack enough to keep the game close.

The Penn State offense had an up-and-down performance in Week 1 and much of the talk about why is centered around starting quarterback Sean Clifford.

But just how well, or poorly did he perform on Saturday? Host Thomas Frank Carr and BWI Senior Editor Nate Bauer discuss in-depth his performance, and what type of quarterback he seems to be in his fifth-year on campus for the Penn State Football Team.

They discuss some comments made by Penn State Head Football Coach James Franklin during his weekly press conference and how those comments, if true, can shape the season for Penn State. The ultimate question always comes up when talking about just how good a quarterback is, or can be in any given season. T-Frank and Nate discuss.

They also take a quick look ahead to Ball State and what to expect this Saturday and Penn State's ranking in the latest edition of the AP Poll. Do we really know enough about either team that played in Camp Randall on Saturday to make a fair judgement?

Host Thomas Frank Carr and Blue White Illustrated staff writer Dave Eckert take a look at Week 2 for the Penn State football program.

They start by discussing where they believe that Penn State will rank in the newest national polls this week and why that matters to the team both internally and from a perception standpoint.

Then they discuss areas that they think Penn State should focus on heading into their game with Ball State and how they think the team can improve from week 1 to week 2.

Dave gets specific about where exactly on the squad he wants to see a step forward, while T-Frank gives you a concept he'd like to see get better.

Then they discuss Ball State and what this team brings to the table heading into Beaver Stadium on Saturday. T-Frank did some advanced scouting on Ball State and gives a quick overview of the key players on offense and which positional groups are the best on that side of the ball. He also gives his impression of Drew Plitt, Ball State's quarterback.

Then they discuss the opposite side of the ball and if the Penn State offense will focus on the air or ground attack against a tough, disciplined unit that files to the football. T-Frank also gives you a player to watch on that side of the ball that stood out to him while watching film.

Host Thomas Frank Carr takes you through three quick notes about the Penn State's win over Wisconsin that are interesting to note going forward, but had less impact on the game because the Nittany Lions got a win over Wisconsin on Saturday.

He starts with the running back rotation and comments on how James Franklin and company used their deep stable of backs in a game where the offense was looking for a spark early.

T-Frank then notes that there was one particularly quiet group of playmakers on the football field for Penn State that didn't make the impact we were all expecting them to.

Finally he looks at one key player on defense that we learned the most about on Saturday.

BWI Daily: PFF‘s Anthony Treash on Penn State vs. Wisconsin Sep 02, 2021

Penn State will face the Wisconsin Badgers in Madison this Saturday and BWI Daily Host Thomas Frank Carr takes a look at that game and the season with PFF's Senior College Analyst, Anthony Treash.

The two start out by discussing Graham Mertz, the young and potentially promising quarterback for Wisconsin. Is he the guy from week 1 of 2020? Or the player who struggled the rest of the season. Anthony gives his take on whether or not Mertz is "the guy".

Conversely, Treash has a very defined and strong opinion on who Sean Clifford is as a passer and what he can be in 2021. Treash gets into why he's low on the Nittany Lion's third year starter. They also discuss Mike Yurcich and how his offense is not a great fit for Clifford based on the data.

Then they shift to talking about the young Penn State offensive line and how those players have the recruiting profile, but don't have the reps on film yet to prove that they are ready to protect their QB.

Treash then gets into the front seven of the Wisconsin defense and the players he's going to be watching on Saturday. With all of the points laid out in the Wisconsin game, Treash gives his season prediction for what he thinks the Nittany Lions are in store for this season.

They wrap up by discussing some non-Penn State teams and players with Anthony's bold predictions for 2021.

Penn State will face Wisconsin on Saturday at noon eastern, so we caught up with Badgers Blitz Insider Jake Kocorowski to get an in-depth preview of the Nittany Lion's first opponent of the season.

Jake gives a preview of what Penn State fans who are traveling to Wisconsin should expect from the experience at Camp Randall Stadium from a COVID protocol perspective, but also drops some good places to check out before the game for those arriving before Saturday.

T-Frank gets Jake's thoughts on the Wisconsin offense and the camp battles that went on in Madison over the last month. They discuss the offensive line and some potential names that you haven't heard yet, but may be the next great Badgers lineman.

Graham Mertz had an up and down 2020, which Jakes gives context to in terms of what happened to the first-year starter and tells T-Frank if he thinks that Mertz can be 'the guy' at QB for Wisconsin.

They discuss the Badger's secondary, which is returning a bevvy of experience, and then take a look at the front-seven which is changing some things schematically, and could be in for a breakout season.
