Penn State's potential bowl path is set! Check out athletictravel.com to book your reservation for the potential trip!

On Sunday afternoon, the Penn State Nittany Lions football team discovered its destiny in the College Football Playoff. The committee rewarded the team's Big Ten schedule and its close losses to Ohio State and Oregon with the sixth seed in the playoff bracket. Penn State fell only one spot after losing in the Big Ten Championship game to fourth in the overall playoff rankings. With the conference champions getting byes into the first round, Penn State was the second non-conference champion in the playoff, behind Texas in the fifth spot.

Join the Penn State Football Playoff Seeding Reaction Show as we discuss the team's first-round matchup against the 11th-seeded SM Mustangs, who beat out Alabama for the final spot in the playoff bracket. Blue White Illustrated experts Sean Fitz and Nate Bauer join the show live from Indianapolis to discuss how the playoff committee handled the playoff bracket, their thoughts about Penn State's matchup with SMU, and the team's overall chances of making a run at a national championship.

Check out the show on our YouTube Channel, embedded on the site, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Did Penn State get the best possible path?

As Bauer pointed out during the run-up to conference championship weekend, the biggest debate around college football would be about penalizing participation in those games. Penn State was not penalized for losing to the top-ranked team. ESPN's Reece Davis asked Playoff Committee Chairman Ward Manuel about just how fair it was for Oregon and Penn State to get drastically different paths foward.

"It turns out, the way things have fallen, it might be the six seed instead that is deemed more advantageous. Oregon, the only undefeated team in the country. You guys have deemed them the best team in this playoff. They are the Big Ten champions, and they just beat Penn State. And then when you look at their quarter-final game against either Ohio State or Tennessee, it might be that the ducks have a more disadvantageous road than the six-seed Penn State does in taking on an SMU team that barely made it in, and Boise State, who is not quite as highly ranked."

Manuel deferred answering the question, saying that it was his committee's job to rank the top 25 teams in the country. From there, the rules of automatic byes in the playoffs changed the picture for teams in the field. But it stands to reason that Penn State's path is favorable.

We discuss those notions on the show as well.

    What we know about SMU

From there, we discuss what we know about the first-round matchup with SMU, which will be held at Beaver Stadium on Dec. 21st. We give you a quick preview of the players you need to know and how the team has played so far this season.

The Penn State Nittany Lions football team fell to the top-ranked Oregon Ducks in the Big Ten Championship game on Sunday night. Now, the program is at the College Football Playoff Committee's mercy regarding where it will play next in two weeks. Join the Labatt Postgame Show to discuss the loss and Penn State's chances at making a run deep into the playoff. We'll discuss what happened and why to give fans a better understanding of the game.

We'll also be taking your questions and comments throughout the show! Join the live chat to discuss the game. If you haven't, now is a great time to subscribe to the Blue White Illustrated YouTube Channel and enable notifications. We'll provide extensive postseason coverage of the Nittany Lions this winter.

Penn State doesn't get it done vs. Top Five Team

Penn State's defense could not have gotten off to a worse start against Oregon. The Nittany Lions' normally stout front was gashed on the first two drives as Oregon rushed out to an explosive lead. Oregon's speed was too much for the team as they got their explosive athletes into space and raced out to 31 points in the first half, including an 11-point lead early in the second quarter.

But from there, the Penn State offense came roaring back. Unlike previous big games, the offense was the side of the football that held the line for the Nittany Lions, going toe-to-toe with the Ducks and scoring 24 points before halftime.

However, Oregon's explosiveness was too much for the Penn State defense. The Ducks passing attack went off with electric slot receiver Tez Johnson going for 181 yards in the game. Allar threw an interception with under two minutes left in the game to seal the game for the Ducks.

What's next for the Nittany Lions?

Penn State will await its fate on Sunday afternoon to find out its seeding in the first round of the inaugural 12-team playoff. Before then, hear what head coach James Franklin had to say about the game during his postgame press conference. Check that out by following the show on the BWI YouTube Channel. Then, recap the game with our reporters out at Lucas Oil Stadium in our Instant Analysis series. Greg Pickel, Nate Bauer, and Sean Fitz will discuss what they saw during the game and their conversations with players and coaches afterward.

Once the team finds out its playoff fate, join our reaction show, which will be live on YouTube on Sunday afternoon. We'll provide initial feedback about the matchup and Penn State's path to a potential run deep into the playoff. Be sure to enable notifications on your subscription so that you know when we go live.

A new episode of the Penn State wrestling show is now live! Host Thomas Frank Carr and reporter Greg Pickel cover plenty of ground on this week's show ahead of the No. 1 Nittany Lions' return to the mat on Sunday. They travel to the PPL Center in Allentown then to take on Lehigh. The dual meet starts at 2 p.m. and will be streamed by FLO.

This week's show covers the Lions' second dual meet of the season. First, though, it looks at the situation at 133 pounds. Braeden Davis did not compete at the Army Black Knight Invitational for presumed injury precaution reasons after tweaking his knee in the dual opener against Drexel. He should be back this weekend, though, for a shot at No. 1 Mountain Hawk Ryan Crookham.

Davis bumped up to 133 this year after competing at 125 as a freshman. Part of that was natural. But, the Lions also had a hole in that weight class after losing incumbent starter Aaron Nagao to a long-term injury earlier this year.

After that conversation, Carr and Pickel dive into the latest on the starting spot battles at 157 and 197 pounds. Are they Tyler Kasak's and Joshua Barr's jobs' to lose? Pickel weighs in. The show closes with a look at the Lions' trip to Lehigh and the top matchups we expect to see.

The Penn State Nittany Lions Football team faces off against Oregon in the Big Ten Championship Game on Saturday, fighting for a college football playoff bye. Join the BWI Live Show as we preview the game from every angle. Veteran Penn State reporter Sean Fitz discusses his view of the matchups and gives his prediction on today's show. Join the BWI Live Show at 10 a.m. on YouTube or catch the replay wherever you get your podcasts.

    Penn State practice update

The Penn State Nittany Lions held open practice on Wednesday, and as always, Blue White Illustrated was out in force to see it. Fitz will discuss what he observed on the defensive side of the football, and we'll recap the offensive notes from yesterday. If you want to get the full, detailed report, subscribe to Blue White Illustrated and check out the notes on the offense and the notes on the defense from Wednesday night.

We'll review which players were at practice, what we think of the team's depth heading into the game, and more!

It's been eight years since the Penn State football team went to the Big Ten Championship game and won in 2016 against Wisconsin. Franklin was not interested in discussing the potential program-wide benefits of winning the title again.

"Great opportunity, playing the number one team in the country. We're excited about that. That's what we control. That's what we're focused on, not focused on anything else. I mean, I understand the question, I appreciate the question, but we're just focused on trying to beat the number one team in the country, Oregon, in Indianapolis, in the Big 10, and just totally focused on that, and not any of the other scenarios or discussions."

We'll discuss Franklin's other comments that stood out from Wednesday evening.

    Big Ten Championship preview

However, we are interested in those discussions. Today, we're breaking down the team's chances to beat the top-ranked team in the country by discussing the matchups between Penn State and Oregon. We'll discuss which players and matchups will help shape the game and what the Lions need to do to secure victory.

Join the show live at 10 a.m. to get your thoughts and predictions on the show! We'll give you our best guess at the final score to end the show and want to hear your thoughts. Drop your score prediction into the live chat and we'll discuss them in our final segment.

The Penn State Nittany Lions Football team defeated the Maryland Terrapins on Senior Day to close out the 2024 college football regular season. The team is 11-1 and has guaranteed itself a spot in the College Football Playoff and Big Ten Title game with the win. It will also likely host a home game in the process, meaning this was not the last time that the Nittany Lions seniors will play a game at Beaver Stadium.

Celebrate this historic moment by joining the Labatt Postgame Show to discuss the win and what's next for the Penn State Football team. We'll talk about the win, which young players stood out during the final regular season game, and what is next for the program. If you can't get to the show live, catch the replay on the Blue White Illustrated YouTube Channel, embedded in this article, or wherever you get your podcasts.

    Penn State handles Maryland

The start of the game could not have gone worse for Penn State, coming off the news that Ohio State lost to Michigan, opening a path to the Big Ten Championship Game. Running back Nick Singleton fumbled the opening snap on offense, which set up a 25-yard touchdown pass to Kaden Prather for the Maryland offense.

It took a few more drives to get the offensive rhythm together, but Penn State eventually put up 31 points on Maryland in the first half, fueled by 28 in the second quarter.

Part of Penn State's success came down to terrible mistakes from the Terps and great field position, thanks to defensive turnovers. The defense, led by Abdul Carter, secured three sacks and two turnovers, leading to the turnaround.

The team failed to secure more distance through the third quarter, but the defense held Maryland down with just 27 yards of total offense. The Penn State offense scored in the early fourth quarter to end its day before the backups came in for good.

Next up for the Nittany Lions

Penn State will now await the fate of the College Football Playoff selection committee next Sunday, Dec. 8. The selection show starts at noon and will reveal the 12-team playoff bracket and matchups for the first round. Once Penn State learns its fate, we'll go live on the Blue White Illustrated YouTube channel with our reactions to the seeding and opponent.

Penn State remains static in the CFP

Penn State got more good news on Tuesday night when the College Football Playoff committee kept the team in their fourth-place spot. While some argued that Notre Dame should leapfrog the Nittany Lions after an impressive victory over Army, the committee disagreed.

We'll discuss what that means for the team heading into the last week of the regular season, where there are still faint hopes for the Big Ten title game up for grabs if things play out a certain way. However, with that being an unlikely outcome, we'll discuss the current picture of where the team would land in the playoff, given the current seeding.

Is this an ideal scenario for Penn State to make a deep run?

    Final week of football

But with that news still on the horizon, the game at hand matters the most. Penn State faces Maryland this weekend and will try to secure it's first 11-1 season under head coach James Franklin. The team holds practice on Wendesday afternoon and we'll preview the information we'd like to gather during the last open viewing of the team's work for the 2024 regular season.

Which players need to be healthy for the stretch run? We'll give our thoughts about what we want to hear from Franklin after practice.

    Sunday Film Study

Finally, we'll review how Penn State handled the loss of Anthony Donkoh in-game by examining the effect that backup right tackle Nolan Rucci had on the game. We'll give an overview of how he performed and discuss the potential scenarios of how the team will replace Alonzo Ford at defensive tackle.

The team enters the final week of the regular season against a 4-7 Maryland team on the cusp of its first-ever College Football Playoff bid. But not everything went smoothly in Minnesota this past weekend. The team suffered a significant blow on both sides of the line of scrimmage, losing players to long-term injuries. On today's BWI Live Show, we'll discuss the win, the injuries to Anthony Donkoh and Alonzo Ford, and your questions throughout the show.

    Penn State vs. Minnesota recap

Penn State defeated Minnesota 26-25 on Saturday in a closer-than-anticipated outcome. The victory also came with a costly price. Penn State head coach James Franklin announced that both starting right tackle Anthony Donkoh and key reserve defensive tackle Alonzo Ford sustained long-term injuries during the win.

How does Penn State replace them for the coming game against Maryland and beyond? We'll discuss the impact of the loss and the long-term implications of losing a player in Ford that many expected to start in 2025.

From there, we'll discuss the rest of the game and what we might have learned since re-watching the game.

    Fitz's Recruiting Update

It was also a massive weekend for recruiting news, with several surprise situations cropping up for Penn State. What's the situation with Jayden Woods? What other unexpected things happened this weekend? We'll discuss that in our weekly recruiting update with Sean Fitz.

We're just over a week away from National Signing Day, and there's plenty of intrigue with one final weekend to host potential flip targets heading into decision day.

    BWI Mailbag

Finally, we'll discuss your questions about last week's game, the season at large and, of course, the Penn State wide receivers. Each Tuesday, we end the show by opening up the BWI Mailbag and answering questions from fans of the show and members on the Blue White Illustrated message board.
