The Penn State Nittany Lions football team advanced to the second round of the College Football Playoff on Saturday in a cold and windy White Out environment at Beaver Stadium. The team defeated the SMU Mustangs for the right to face Boise St. in the Fiesta Bowl on New Year's Eve. Recap and relive the game today with the BWI Live Show. Experts Sean Fitz and Nate Bauer were at the game on Saturday and give you their thoughts about how the team performed and what it all means for its chances of reaching the championship game.

With the holidays upon us, the BWI Live schedule will shift over the next two weeks. We'll have a live show today and Friday, Dec 27. Then, we'll be back on Dec 30 for a game preview, followed by a recap show later in the first week of January.

The best way to know when we go live during the holidays is to subscribe to the Blue White Illustrated YouTube Channel and enable notifications. That way, you'll receive an alert every time we go live, post breaking news, commitments, press conferences, and more!

    Penn State transfer portal news

Today's show will primarily be a recap of the game, but there's always something else percolating in the background for Penn State football in December. We'll start the show with the latest news, including where former quarterback Beau Pribula will land in the transfer portal. We'll also give you the latest highlights from the recruiting and portal news for the team's acquisition efforts.

    White Out Crowd Delivers

Next, we'll discuss the team's win over SMU in the first round of the playoffs. Despite concerns that Beaver Stadium would be half-empty in the leadup to the game, the crowd of over 100,000 fans delivered. We'll discuss the impact of the noise and the cold on SMU. We'll also recap the defensive performance with the defensive line's dominant effort against the Mustangs.

However, one component of that conversation that's missing is the offense. What should fans make of the performance in the cold on Saturday? We'll recap the team's rocky start, the run game's dominance, and another bumpy game from the passing attack.

Penn State takes care of SMU by forcing mistakes

In the Big Ten Championship game, Penn State was the team that made mistakes and turned the ball over. The script flipped on Saturday in the win over SMU. The defense forced three first-half turnovers on interceptions of Kevin Jennings, two of which were returned for touchdowns. Linebackers Dom DeLuca and Tony Rojas fueled a 28-0 first-half surge from the Nittany Lions that put the game out of reach.

The Penn State offense had another sluggish and uneven performance. However, they did enough to complement the defense in the win. The ground game got going with a 25-yard touchdown run by Kaytron Allen in the first half. Overall, it was still a quiet day for the running backs, who failed to crack 100 yards on the day.

    More postgame content

The Penn State Nittany Lions football team faces off against SMU on Saturday in the first round of the College Football Playoff. The team hosts the Mustangs on what's expected to be a cold, windy day at Beaver Stadium. Today, we'll give you our predictions for what we think will happen this weekend. We'll also give you the latest portal and recruiting news from experts Sean Fitz and Ryan Snyder. Join the show live at 10 a.m. on YouTube or catch the replay embedded in the article below, on the channel or wherever you get your podcasts!

    Penn State Recruiting Update

It's a slow time of year for recruiting, with all but the last bits of Penn State's recruiting efforts in 2025 wrapped up. The portal is open, but the closer we get to game day, the fewer nuggets there are. However, Fitz and Snyder are the best in the business and still have some interesting tidbits to share on the show. Snyder spoke with 2026 wide recevier commit Jerquaden Guildford this week to understand why he pulled the trigger early on Penn State. He'll share parts of that interview and what his inclusion in the upcoming class represents.

Next, we'll discuss Penn State's open practice from Wednesday night. The team opened the doors of Holuba Hall for the media to get a brief glimpse of what was going on between the lines for the Nittany Lions as they prepared for SMU. We'll discuss some takeaways from practice and then discuss some of James Franklin's comments afterward.

    Transfer portal

We've discussed the transfer portal daily on the BWI Live show this week. There have been several updates since our last conversation on Wednesday morning, including news about the team's first signee, wide recevier Kyron Hudson. We'll relate that update to you and also discuss what we know about linebacker Kendal Daniels and his potential fit with the program.

Penn State vs SMU game preview and predictions

Of course, the most important event on the calendar for Penn State is the game this weekend. The team has worked since January for the right to play in the College Football Playoff, and that starts on Saturday at noon. We'll preview the game from both sides of the football and give our score predictions to end the show. Join us live and put your thoughts and score predictions in the live chat. We'll answer your questions and give your takes throughout the show!

On Tuesday, Penn State football completed a two-day College Football Playoff media blitz to begin its game week against SMU. On today's show; we'll recap the noteworthy points from Monday and Tuesday, preview the game, and discuss the latest transfer portal activity.

Penn State vs. SMU: What they said this week

Penn State players spoke with the media on Tuesday as part of the team's media obligations in the playoff. Host Greg Pickel points out an interesting trend that emerged yesterday from the team's top players, including Abdul Carter, Zane Durant, and Nick Singleton. SMU coach Rhett Lashlee also spoke to the media, and we'll review his comments about Penn State and what he had to say about the matchup.

    Game Preview

Next, we'll discuss the upcoming game and what we think of the matchup between the two teams. Can Penn State get a decisive win in the cold against a Southern team? We'll discuss the factors and matchups that will decide the outcome of Saturday's game.

    Transfer portal activity

While Penn State hasn't signed any new players out of the transfer portal this week, there are plenty of names and news that will interest fans. Former Penn State quarterback Beau Pribula has a list of teams that are potential landing destinations that we'll cover on today's show.

We'll also discuss the latest names that have entered the portal, including USC wide receiver Zachariah Branch. Does he make sense for Penn State, and could the Lions afford him? We'll discuss the wide receiver situation and what that would look like in the offense next year.

    Schedule for next week

As we hinted earlier, we'll have a modified holiday schedule next week. We'll recap the game between SMU and Penn State on Monday and discuss the fallout of a win or loss at 10 a.m. on the 23rd. We'll reconvene with a recruiting show on Friday of that week to preview the next wave of recruiting information and transfer portal activity on the 27th.

BWI Live: Penn State Head Coach James Franklin Calls Out College Football for Broken Process Dec 17, 2024

The Penn State Nittany Lions Football team is dealing with multiple layers of college football simultaneously. Sunday evening, backup quarterback and offensive contributor Beau Pribula announced that he would transfer and leave the program. The next morning, starter Drew Allar announced his decision to return. All of this is playing out in the roster-building portion of the calendar while Penn State is still playing. Head coach James Franklin addressed all of these ideas during his Monday press confernece ahead of the team's playoff game against SMU.

We'll discuss what Franklin said yesterday, give a preview of the transfer portal work the team is doing, plus preview the upcoming game against the Mustangs on the BWI Live Show today at 10 a.m. Join the show live or catch the replay embedded below, on the Blue White Illustrated YouTube Channel, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Franklin calls for a massive change to college football.

Yesterday, Franklin discussed the issues that led to Pribula's decision to transfer. The third-year passer wanted to stay with the program but couldn't manage the responsibilities on his plate. Franklin described it as a "no-win" situation and called for a change to the way the sport is run.

"Beau should not be put in this position. Whether we don't play as many games during the season, whether we don't play conference championship games -- which could equal things out for teams not playing them anyway, finish this season so it aligns more with the academic calendar for most institutions because that's part of this pressure as well," Franklin said.

To have a transfer portal/free agency going on right in the middle of the playoffs, there's just a lot of things that don't really make sense.

I know there's been a lot of discussions about maybe a commissioner of college football, but I think it's pretty obvious we need that. We need somebody running college football."

    Transfer portal activity

Penn State has hosted several transfer portal targets for the upcoming season. The team gained its first commitment on Monday evening when USC wide receiver Kyron Hudson joined the program for the 2025 season. We'll discuss Hudson's impact on the roster and his ability to make a dent in the team's receiver room next year.

We'll also discuss the latest in Penn State recruiting during Fitz's recruiting update and give a preview of the game against SMU to close the show. Join us live at 10 a.m. to discuss all of that and more on the BWI Live Show!

    Penn State schedule release 2025

Fans have been eagerly waiting to see the upcoming Big Ten schedule for next season, and they finally got it on Wednesday afternoon. If you have yet to see it, we'll show you the schedule and discuss how it plays out for Penn State football next year.

Next, we'll dive into the latest recruiting news from Penn State football. It's been nearly a week since the recruiting staff scored two major upsets, with Andrew Olesh and Jerquaden Guilford signing on with the program. While Olesh is an immediate addition, Guildford is a Class of 2026 recruit. Our experts will discuss at length what they think of the two and how they change the future prospects of the tight end and wide receiver rooms.

Of course, the biggest prize left on the market in Elite 11 finalist quarterback Bryce Baker. How does the extended head coaching search change the picture for Penn State with the 6-2 passer? We'll give the latest on what we know from that front.

    Transfer portal and recruiting udpate

Finally, we'll dig into the latest news regarding the transfer portal. Penn State is officially linked to defensive tackle David Blay and wide receiver Eric Rivers. We'll discuss those names, plus an additional player you may not have heard of. Penn State wrestling is 2-0 after beating Lehigh handily last Sunday at the PPL Center in Allentown. It returns to the mat this weekend to host Wyoming. We look back at the latest win and ahead to the next matchup on this week's Nittany Lions wrestling show from Blue-White Illustrated.

Host Thomas Frank Carr and reporter Greg Pickel start this episode with top takeaways from the victory over the Mountain Hawks. Penn State won nine of 10 bouts. Freshman Luke Lilledahl had a highlight win over Lehigh's Sheldon Seymour at 125 pounds while sophomore Josh Barr beat former Nittany Lion and Lehigh senior Michael Beard by major decision at 197 pounds. What did those results tell us about the outlook for each young Nittany Lion moving forward? Carr and Pickel discuss. Then, they break down what sophomore Braeden Davis' 4-2 to loss to No. 1 Mountain Hawk Ryan Crookham at 133 pounds tells us about where he is at in his new weight class at this early stage of the season. They close out that portion of the show by looking at whether or not the Penn State starting lineup is set in stone yet or not.

From there, the conversation turns to this weekend's opponent, Wyoming. The Cowboys and Nittany Lions will meet for the first time. The dual, which is at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday, is now at the Bryce Jordan Center. It moved there from Rec Hall due ot the fact that a women's volleyball postseason event is now being held at the usual home of Nittany Lion wrestling.

The transfer portal opened earlier this week, and a flood of names poured out of social media during the first several days of the week. Those players, many of whom are on teams that are done playing football for the year, are looking for new homes. Meanwhile, Penn State football marches on in the College Football Playoff, hosting SMU on Dec. 21. So, how does Penn State navigate the current schedule mess in college football? The team is trying to prepare for its first-ever playoff appearance while simultaneously setting up the next one.

We'll do the same during today's BWI Live Show. Reporter Greg Pickel joins the program to discuss the latest news in the transfer portal and beyond. We'll highlight Penn State's early portal targets that we know about and discuss the players that have exited the Nittany Lion's program.

Next, we'll discuss Pickel's reporting on Penn State safety KJ Winston. Will the star defender be able to make it back for a deep playoff run? Pickel asked head coach James Franklin on Sunday, and we'll discuss the answer.

Finally, the 2025 schedule comes out later today, and we'll preview what we know about it.

    Penn State vs. Oregon Recap

We discussed the Big Ten Championship game on the Tuesday BWI Live Show, but we'll let Pickel have the last word on the game. What did he think led to the team's loss? We'll take one last look back before moving forward to the next game on the schedule.

    SMU Preview

Finally, we'll discuss the upcoming game between Penn State and SMU in the first round of the playoff. We'll discuss what we know about the Mustangs, how they play, and what sort of challenges they bring to the field for Penn State's offense and defense. We'll also take your questions and discuss your thoughts on the show! Join us live at 10 a.m. and drop your comments into the live chat. Penn State retains major piece for the playoff and beyond

The Penn State coaching staff retained a key part of its makeup on Monday evening when offensive coordiantor Andy Kotelnicki announced that he was staying with the program. West Virginia was reportedly after the first-year coordinator in recent days. We'll discuss the impact of having Kotelnicki stay with the program for the postseason run and beyond.

We'll also discuss the possibility of Penn State keeping quarterback Drew Allar and Kotelnicki together for one more season. Reporters Sean Fitz and Nate Bauer will discuss what they know of the situation as it unfolded and what you should expect from coordinators who find success, such as Kotelnicki.

    Fitz's recruiting update

Friday was a busy day for the Nittany Lions. Even before the team kicked off against Oregon on Saturday, the team secured several wins over the weekend. Andrew Olesh, a four-star tight end and top player in Pennsylvania, chose Penn State on Friday afternoon. What does it mean for the program to flip the top player in the state from rival Michigan? Fitz will also discuss the impact of 2026 wide receiver Jerquaden Guilford, who also committed on Friday.

Finally, there's one outstanding commitment left in the Class of 2025. Quarterback Bryce Baker has yet to make a decision on his future, with North Carolina delaying its decision on a new head coach. Fitz will discuss the impact of the delay and its effect on Penn State's chances to land the Elite 11 finalist.

    Penn State vs Oregon Recap

While it's nearly old news with all of the events that have happened since Saturday night, it's still important to look back at Penn State's performance in the Big Ten Championship game against Oregon. We'll discuss what we can and can't take away from the game when discussing how the offense and defense performed against the number one team in the country.

Finally, we'll discuss the other news coming out of this past weekend including the transfer portal opening on Monday and fans finding out the fate of several key players for the postseason.
