Evil Behind You (2006) Oct 29, 2023

Show notes

Muslim extremists encounter extra-dimensional demons while developing a new strain of bacterial meningitis to use for bioterrorism in this harebrained Christian sci-fi/horror film by auteur Jim Carroll, who rose to viral fame in 2020 for his similarly conceptually ambitious film ASSASSIN 33 A.D., in which Muslim extremists go back in time to kill Jesus before He can be crucified and resurrected. It's clear that Jim Carroll has Islam on the brain; he portrays Muslim people as not only vindictive toward Christians, but also capable of achieving some of the most advanced scientific accomplishments in human history in order to thwart Christianity. The Muslim extremists in EVIL BEHIND YOU have kidnapped two (white) couples, whose backstories unravel as they attempt to escape their medical torture dungeon, and we learn of each protagonist's relationship to faith in Jesus Christ. Also threatening these unwilling test subjects are a group of low-poly CGI demons, who seem to be waiting for their victims to die so they can drag their unsaved souls into hell. It's a race against the clock to accept Christ into your heart before terrorism or disease kill you in this bleak, bizarre, and compelling Christian thriller.

A masked stalker terrorizes teen babysitters in a suburban home in the third and final film of the PRAY Christian horror trilogy created by Matt Mitchell and Cross Shadow Productions. This meta-horror (watch out, A24!) takes us into multiple layers of references as teen protagonists Sloan and Allyson manifest their horrific encounter by watching the original PRAY film while spending the night in the actual house where it was shot. We learn in PRAY 3 that this house is still inhabited by the series's original "final girl," Laurie Curtis (an obvious reference to HALLOWEEN's protagonist Laurie, portrayed by Jamie Lee Curtis). When Laurie leaves for the evening to go on a dinner date with her husband, she can't imagine the horror that threatens her hired babysitters in her absence. Christian horror is always novel because it's interesting to see how a devoutly Christian DIY filmmaker will have to circumvent the obvious obstacles that would prevent their film from being G-rated while still being influenced by their favorite secular horror films. The PRAY series uses a lot of bloodless fake outs, silly jump scares, and closeups of wholesome Halloween decorations to remind us that although Halloween can be scary, there is no evil in the world that can defeat God's love. PRAY 3 also manages to sneak in a direct warning to teens that there is absolutely no reason for young men and women to spend any time together unless accompanied by an adult. This Halloween, the scares are close to home, but our morals are more powerful than ever!

The Devil Conspiracy (2022) Oct 15, 2023

Show notes

A plucky art student is kidnapped by satanists and involuntarily impregnated with the cloned embryo of the antichrist in this compelling, overwhelming, and unintentionally hilarious supernatural thriller. THE DEVIL CONSPIRACY is not the family-friendly type of Christian movie we tend to cover on our show; it's decidedly R-rated for strong language and disturbing body horror. However, the plot is firmly embedded in Christian mythology, embellishing on the biblical battle between St. Michael and his fallen fellow archangel, Lucifer. In the film, Lucifer has escaped cosmic imprisonment and is attempting to regain human form with help from a satanic cult who earn extra money cloning historic heroes such as Michelangelo and Vivaldi and then selling the cloned babies to rich people who want a child with a built-in résumé. Protagonist Laura (Alice Orr-Ewing) is sketching artifacts at a Shroud of Turin exhibition when she and the Shroud are both kidnapped with the intent of implanting Christ's DNA within her so she can be the "Virgin Mary" of the antichrist. This leads to the movie's ultimate question: if you were pregnant with the literal devil, would you have an abortion? The resounding answer: no! After a cockamamie series of plot twists and pseudo-intellectual debates, THE DEVIL CONSPIRACY concludes that even Lucifer deserves a second chance. We can't help but interpret this ending as strongly anti-abortion, a bizarre message to be left with after two hours of watching a woman be possessed and tortured by the demon seed within her.

Halloween Heroes (2021) TEASER Oct 08, 2023

Our season of Christian horror and Halloween films begins with this family-friendly thriller about a group of teens who, through Jesus's power, become magically fused with their Halloween costumes to fight an evil real estate investor with supernatural abilities. Directed by one of our faves, Jason Campbell, and co-written with his frequent collaborator Bobby Lacer, HALLOWEEN HEROES refreshingly avoids making too big of a deal about the scary imagery of the Halloween holiday. Some conservative or ultra-paranoid Christians see Halloween as a window that lets in demonic forces; according to this movie, Methodists just see Halloween as another fun excuse for church togetherness and fellowship, promoted through an annual "trunk or treat" celebration that allows kids to collect candy in the safety of their own church's parking lot. However, local villain Brutus Snively hopes to spoil Halloween fun. He manipulates the weather, stops the flow of time, and even conjures a giant shark to appear in a freshwater lake in order to torment his neighbors so much that they sell him their homes and flee town. Snively would like to control the city; however, the prayers of a few plucky teens and the costumes they purchased from HalloweenCostumes.com threaten to give him the scare of a lifetime.

Dhar Mann Pt. 2 Oct 01, 2023

Show notes

We present the next chapter in our coverage of Dhar Mann, the famous youtube entrepreneur whose moralizing tales of workers, bosses, and gold diggers remind us of our favorite Christian movies. In our 2021 bonus episode on Dhar Mann and his production company (now unlocked for free on our public feed), we posited that Dhar's modern day video parables function as a religious text within a spiritual practice that worships only money. We also speculated that something shady was happening at Dhar Mann headquarters, mostly just because Dhar's shiny branding and suspiciously positive tone gave us bad vibes. Little did we know that in February 2023, many of Dhar Mann's most prolific cast members would expose the production company for its unfair treatment, going as far as to set up a picket line outside the studio demanding compensation that reflected the money their work was earning for the channel. Dhar's channel is considered a non-union "new media" enterprise, so it is not beholden to many of the same labor regulations enforced on the average shoot within the Los Angeles film and television industry. This legal loophole allows Dhar to pay his actors by the hour instead of a day rate and to not be forced to compensate actors for extra labor such as in-person appearances at ticketed fan events. Unfortunately, many of the actors that spoke up were simply fired from Dhar Mann's studios, and the machine continues without them as internet amnesia makes the strike of 6 months ago seem like ancient history. Ash and Julian examine how Dhar Mann's storytelling tone and technique has evolved since 2021, and they read a fascinating article by former prolific Dhar Mann actor Michael Vaccaro which gives a rare behind-the-scenes look at the bizarre practices of one of the internet's most famous media franchises of all time.

[UNLOCKED] Dhar Mann Oct 01, 2023

Show notes

We are unlocking this bonus episode originally released Oct. 24, 2021 to accompany our new episode -- Dhar Mann Pt. 2!

Original episode description:

We analyze the extremely popular video parables of Dhar Mann, a serial entrepreneur turned YouTuber who boasts more than 12 million subscribers to his channel and over 5.5 billion video views. Dhar and the cast and crew employed by his production company Dhar Mann Studios create nakedly didactic yet endlessly compelling short films on moral themes. The tone is very similar to the Christian media we cover, despite not being overtly Christian itself. In his scripts, Dhar Mann invokes broad and often questionable archetypes of human behavior to prove his points - blonde bombshell "gold diggers" take advantage of shrugging "nice guys", a pink-haired antifa member criticizes an honest cop, and a dishonest beggar is actually a scammer pretending to be disabled. The bizarre, inconsistent messaging paired with pristine production value is really confusing to behold, and it makes one wonder - is something wrong here? Past allegations of fraud and some tiny bits of online evidence from former employees paint a less wholesome picture of Dhar Mann's operation than his shiny exterior would have you believe. Whether or not our hunches about him are correct, we still find his videos disturbing for the way they proselytize the religion of American capitalism, and venerate the rich as living saints.

SPECIAL REPORT: Doja Cat's Demonic Initiation TEASER Sep 24, 2023

We are sorry to report that a new mainstream figure in pop culture has gone fully satanic. "Doja Cat" (you can't make this stuff up, folks) seems to have undergone some sort of Masonic initiation on her 27th birthday and emerged with a new mission to normalize devils, demons, and "spiritual spouses" to a culture that laps it up like dogs. People love demons so much, in fact, that Doja Cat's single "Paint the Town Red", which contains troubling lyrics such as "Mmm, she a devil," broke Spotify streaming records and quickly became a Billboard number one hit. Doja Cat then released follow-up single "Demons", in which she hints that she is a "puppet" and a "cash cow" for the illuminati to use to inflict their godless and soul-crushing message on the impressionable public. We know that our gentle listeners are as disturbed by these developments as we are, so we took the pulse of our Christian podcasting community to find some constructive solutions to combat dark cultural influence. We react to videos by luminaries such as Ben Shapiro, FLF, Armor of God, and our new favorite Christian youtuber Tailah, who drops some knowledge on us about the way demons can enter into your soul while you are sleeping to give you perverted dreams. This is the newest episode in our ongoing series chronicling contemporary satanic panic. Our conclusion: keep panicking!

Hope For What We Do Not See (2016) Sep 17, 2023

Show notes

The Jehovah's Witnesses are possibly the superior filmmakers of all the Christian denominations. Although much of their process is shrouded in secrecy since they never provide production information, there is clearly a sophisticated filmmaking operation in place at the Watch Tower Society, with professional-grade actors, writers, and technicians putting their talents together to reinforce the message of Jehovah. We've previously covered JW features such as REMEMBER THE WIFE OF LOT, THE PRODIGAL RETURNS and THESE WORDS . . . MUST BE ON YOUR HEART. All of these films are modern-day retellings of Bible stories, all are competently directed with passionate performances from anonymous actors, and all emphasize relatively extreme, austere, and literal interpretations of the Bible compared to other sects. This week's film HOPE FOR WHAT WE DO NOT SEE is based on the story of Job. Similar to Job, protagonist Ethan Bannister's life sucks. Despite being a model Jehovah's Witness, Ethan seems punished in life. He loses his reliable job at the factory, he's diagnosed with cancer, and then (in the ultimate Christian movie event) he loses both his father AND his youngest son in a car accident. Why would Jehovah test His faithful servant like this? In HOPE FOR WHAT WE DO NOT SEE, we learn that Jehovah isn't the cause of our suffering, but instead our refuge in times of difficulty. We also appreciate the subtle nods in the script to some of our favorite Jehovah's Witness quirks — no blood transfusions, no dating until adulthood, and absolutely NO working overtime at your job.

Unequally Yoked, Part II (2022) TEASER Sep 10, 2023

We return with our long-awaited review of the hotly anticipated sequel to Unequally Yoked, the feature film comprised of slice-of-life vignettes about relationships in which one person's lack of seriousness about Christ threatens to drag the other behind. UNEQUALLY YOKED, PART II does something we frequently see from DIY filmmakers making their sophomore effort, which is to assume that their audience is deeply invested in the characters they've created and push their stories further than necessary in a way that doesn't really fit the mission statement of the first film. In this case, however… the plan worked! We at Boys' Bible Study found ourselves asking — whatever happened to the Bell Family? How will Ce Ce and Jeremiah adapted to newlywed life? Is Marcus leaving the path of the hustler behind? And, gentle listeners: we simply could simply not have predicted what goes on between Dante and Candy. Once again set in a predominantly black Baptist congregation in Indianapolis, IN, and once again featuring the catchiest theme song we've ever heard in a DIY Christian film franchise, UNEQUALLY YOKED, PART II is a low budget sensation that already has us itching to review its spin-off film THE BELL FAMILY CHRISTMAS once the holiday season comes around later this year.

One More Round (2015) Sep 03, 2023

Show notes

This over-the-top yet underrated Christian boxing film is a who's who of some of our favorite creators in the faith-based genre. The ever-present Kevin Sorbo co-stars as a burned out boxing coach. TC Stallings, who stars in the Kendrick Brothers' high-grossing relationship drama WAR ROOM (2015), is in the ONE MORE ROUND ensemble as a hulking rival boxer. However, the names we're most excited to see on the credits are director Chip Rossetti and co-writer and co-star Donald James Parker, the duo behind the incredibly grating yet wonderful GRAMPS GOES TO COLLEGE (2014) about an old guy who enrolls in an undergrad program to debunk the lies of Biology 101. Donald James Parker's writerly touch is all over what could otherwise be a straightforwardly inspirational tale about a lapsed Christian boxer (Jake Taylor, played by Tommy Lee Thomas) who needs a miracle to be able to provide for his family. Parker's insane turns of phrase and trademark toxic female characters elevate the drama of ONE MORE ROUND to surreal territory. However, there's one more shining star in the cast who we should mention — Franco Columbu, the bodybuilder, actor, and frequent associate of Arnold Schwarzenegger, who made his final film appearance in ONE MORE ROUND shortly before he passed away in 2019. With such a glittering list of names associated with this film, we wonder, why isn't ONE MORE ROUND more well known in the Christian film world? We attempt to answer this question during our discussion with a little help from a new "Good Art/Bad Art" chart that made the rounds on Twitter this week, which has finally removed the subjectivity from art criticism and rendered our jobs useless from this point forward.
