    Black Oxygen

    Angela Russell is a Black woman who loves Wisconsin. That said, with so few Black folks in the state, sometimes she needs a little extra dose of Black oxygen. A place where she can breathe, connect, restore by hearing and listening deeply to Black folks in this shared journey of life. This podcast will feature and highlight the Black voices in Wisconsin and a little beyond. We hope that these conversations will lift your spirits and give you a few moments to breathe. Get your candles lit and your incense burning. It’s time for Black Oxygen.

On this episode of Black Oxygen, we discuss Black hair and the crown act, the purpose of and vision of Urban League of Greater Madison's Young Professional Group, and the creation of The Black Diner.     In 2019, Oby Nwabuzor created and founded Envision Growth, a Milwaukee-based real estate development firm focused on creating a positive community impact through urban regeneration. In addition to running Envision Growth, she is currently pursuing her DrPH with a focus on the intersection of economic inclusion, real estate and health & social equity, AND she's the Director of DEI at Landmark Credit Union.

    In this episode of Black Oxygen, Oby discusses her Wisconsin journey, how purpose keeps her in Wisconsin, and how her life as an entrepreneur started with a candy shop in her locker in middle school. Because this season is all about beauty, she also discusses the role of complexion and beauty standards. She reminds us that, "black beauty is more than just physical … it's our culture."

    Tiffany Malone: Own It - Black Homeownership in Madison Mar 13, 2023

    According to 2022 report on home ownership by the nonpartisan Wisconsin Policy Forum, only 15% of Black households own their home in Madison, compared to over 50% of White households. Nationwide, 42% of Black households own their homes, compared to 72% of white households.

    This episode of Black Oxygen features a conversation with Tiffany Malone a Realtor in Madison and the co-founder of Own It: Building Black Wealth. In this episode, Tiffany discusses her journey to Wisconsin, the purpose and key successes of Own It, and provides advice on purchasing your first home.

    Chris Walker: Art as a manifestation of culture Feb 27, 2023

    Chris Walker is the Director of the Division of Arts, a Professor of Dance and is the Founding Artistic Director of the First Wave Program at UW-Madison. His Wisconsin journey is the embodiment of the Wisconsin Idea - and starts in Jamaica.
