    Black Oxygen

    Angela Russell is a Black woman who loves Wisconsin. That said, with so few Black folks in the state, sometimes she needs a little extra dose of Black oxygen. A place where she can breathe, connect, restore by hearing and listening deeply to Black folks in this shared journey of life. This podcast will feature and highlight the Black voices in Wisconsin and a little beyond. We hope that these conversations will lift your spirits and give you a few moments to breathe.     Kayla Conklin, President of Urban League of Greater Madison Young Professionals, Kayla Conklin wants to make Madison a model city for equity. Originally from Illinois, Kayla came to Wisconsin to attend and cheer for UW Madison. After graduating, Kayla stayed here and Madison has become her home. In this episode of Black Oxygen we discuss Kayla's undergrad experience at UW, her relationship with her father, her career journey and some of the challenges of being a young Black professional in Madison. She gives a special call to action for to learn more about the Urban League of Greater Madison's Young Professionals group. She's a leader on the rise - and we should all listen to hear thoughts on what would make Madison a better place for all.

    In the Fall of 2023, local Madison leader Ali Muldrow took a new job as the first Executive Director of the Wisconsin Abortion Fund. The Wisconsin Abortion Fund is one of the oldest abortion funds in the nation and works to eliminate the financial and resource burden of abortion as health care. He is a Super Bowl Champion, a DJ, a UW-Madison Hall of Fame inductee, and serves of the board of directors for the W Club and the Madison Areas Sports Commission.     On September 20th, Letesha Nelson, the Executive Director of the Goodman Community Center, is hosting a community conversation on the evolving role of donors featuring Vu Le. Vu is the author of the book Unicorns Unite: How nonprofits and foundations can build EPIC Partnerships and this the creator and author of the website Nonprofit AF. In this episode of Black Oxygen, Letesha, Vu and I talk about the sometimes challenging dynamic between non-profit and philanthropy, what it means to leave justice as a legacy, the role of AI and the impact it will have on the non-project sector, and so much more. Regarding AI Vu says, "AI is life fire, it can be used to either warm people or burn people." Letesha and Vu caused me to think a lot during this conversation - and this conversation is just a warm up session for what you'll hear and experience at the Goodman Community Center event this coming Wednesday.
